CarGurus Analysis: 2021 Hyundai Sonata
overall

Summary
With 1,411 currently listed for sale and an average price of $17,207.00, 29.6% of 2021 Hyundai Sonatas for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2021 Hyundai Sonata 4.75 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8.5 / 10.
71.2% of 2021 Sonata models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2021 Hyundai Sonata stands out as a midsize sedan that tries to make performance and practicality work together. The expert test drive data describes the Sonata N Line as a credible car for driving enthusiasts who still want a sedan that is thrilling to drive, and it also says the model is aimed at people who prefer on-pavement performance but still need passenger and cargo practicality. That combination gives the Sonata a clear identity in a shrinking car market where traditional sport sedans are increasingly rare.
It also brings together several appealing strengths: stylish design, multiple powertrain options, and impressive technology. The same source says the Sonata N Line addresses both performance and practicality in a compelling midsize package and at a bargain price, which makes it especially attractive for buyers who want something more engaging than a typical family sedan without giving up everyday usefulness. At the same time, the car is not without compromises, since all-wheel drive is not available and the base engine is described as underwhelming.
Owner feedback reinforces some of those positives, with drivers praising the smooth driving experience, safety features, strong fuel economy, stylish design, and excellent powertrain warranty. Some reviewers also mention cabin noise and frustration with optional features that require an upgrade to get full functionality, so the 2021 Hyundai Sonata’s appeal is strongest for shoppers who value style, efficiency, and a well-rounded driving experience more than maximum traction or a particularly lively entry-level engine.

The 2021 Sonata is a great car. The car’s features with the dashboard design, bose speakers, premium seats and sunroof are the best. It looks good on the road. The features are an upgrade from the Elantra but I would recommend.

After test driving a Nissan Altima, Toyota Camry, and Honda Accord, I kept going back to the Sonata. The car drives really smooth and has many features I was looking forward. I was not really impressed with the other vehicles I drove, especially since they were priced higher than the Sonata. Hyundai had definitely made an improvement in the last couple of years!!

Cabin noise but I don’t mind it’s relaxing. Limited is fast too in sport mode. Love ambient interior lighting.

Yes — the 2021 Hyundai Sonata earns a 4.75/5 user rating, and the expert rating is 8.5/10. The standout strength is Cost effectiveness at 10/10.
Drivers consistently praise its smooth driving experience, strong fuel economy, and stylish design. They also highlight the safety features and the excellent powertrain warranty, which helps the car feel like a well-rounded daily driver.
The trade-offs are clear: all-wheel drive is not available, and the base engine is described as underwhelming. Even so, the Sonata’s mix of style, technology, and everyday practicality makes sense if you want a midsize sedan that feels more polished than basic.
With 25.4% of listings marked as good or great deals, the market still gives you room to shop selectively.
Is the 2021 Hyundai Sonata reliable?
Owners rate it 4.75/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback points to a dependable, trouble-free ownership experience, with drivers emphasizing strong fuel economy and an excellent powertrain warranty. That combination suggests you can count on it for everyday use without feeling like you’re taking on a risky long-term bet.
The expert drive notes also reinforce that sense of confidence, describing the car as a composed, secure-feeling sedan with a quality ride and trustworthy braking. On the ownership side, the three years of free scheduled maintenance add another helpful cushion early in your time with the car.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is making sure the specific car you choose has been maintained well and hasn’t been compromised by prior damage.
What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Hyundai Sonata?
At 71.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has any signs of prior bodywork or uneven wear. Focus on condition, maintenance records, and whether the technology and driver-assistance features work as intended.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The N Line treatment adds a more aggressive exterior look, sport front seats with Nappa leather bolsters and Dinamica suede inserts, red stitching, aluminum pedal covers, dark chrome accents, and a panoramic sunroof. It is the version to consider if you want the most distinctive styling and a more performance-focused cabin.
- Powertrain: The turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder makes 290 horsepower and 311 pound-feet of torque, paired with an eight-speed wet dual-clutch automatic transmission. It also adds paddle shifters, rev-matching, launch control, and driving modes that support a more engaging drive.
- Safety package: Hyundai SmartSense includes adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability, forward-collision warning with pedestrian and cyclist detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assistance, lane-centering assistance, blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic warning, driver-attention warning, automatic high-beam headlights, Rear Occupant Alert, Safe Exit Warning, and Highway Drive Assist.
- Infotainment: You get a 10.25-inch touchscreen, a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel, wireless smartphone charging, navigation, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, HD Radio, SiriusXM, Blue Link connected services, and a Bose premium sound system. It does not offer a WiFi hotspot.
- Fuel efficiency: The powertrain is rated at 27 mpg in combined driving, and the test route returned 23.7 mpg.
Which 2021 Hyundai Sonata trim should I buy?
The 2021 Hyundai Sonata is offered in 1 trim level: N Line.
Here's the short version:
N Line: This is the one to buy if you want the Sonata’s most compelling mix of performance, style, and equipment. It adds the turbocharged engine, dual-clutch transmission, sport suspension, larger brakes, and the most distinctive interior and exterior details, while also bundling the strongest technology and safety content. It is the best-value choice if you want the Sonata to feel genuinely special rather than merely well equipped.
The safety package is comprehensive, and the N Line includes Highway Drive Assist along with the full SmartSense suite.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Hyundai Sonata?
This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile options.
- Deal availability: 25.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,436 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.62% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 71.4% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $17,166.20, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2021 Hyundai Sonata's resale value?
The current average of $17,159 sits slightly below last year's $18,575.
That softer pricing suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable entry point today. For a future seller, that also means resale value will depend heavily on condition, mileage, and how well the car has been maintained.
Because the model still has strong owner satisfaction and broad appeal as a practical midsize sedan, well-kept examples should remain easier to move than neglected ones. The key is to buy smart now so you have the best chance of preserving value later.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.75/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2021 Hyundai Sonata safe?
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Hyundai SmartSense is the standard driver-assistance suite, and it includes adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability, forward-collision warning with pedestrian and cyclist detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assistance, lane-centering assistance, blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic warning, driver-attention warning, automatic high-beam headlights, Rear Occupant Alert, Safe Exit Warning, and Highway Drive Assist.
The expert review also notes that the system works smoothly and accurately in traffic, which supports everyday confidence behind the wheel. One caveat is that the review says the NHTSA had not carried over the standard Sonata’s frontal-impact ratings to the N Line at the time of publication, and IIHS had not yet assigned a rating.
Should I buy a 2021 Hyundai Sonata or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2021 if:
- 25.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 71.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.62% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.75/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2021 stands out for its bargain-priced N Line performance focus and strong everyday practicality.
Consider the 2022 if:
- At $19,884, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $17,159 average.
- It leans harder into value and quality while adding a quiet cabin and standard advanced safety features.
The bottom line: If you want the better price today, the 2021 is the smarter path, especially if you value the N Line’s performance character and strong equipment. If you’re willing to spend more for a newer model-year feel and broader value positioning, the 2022 is the alternative to compare.
