Is the 2021 Hyundai Elantra reliable?

The expert review also reinforces that impression by describing the Elantra as a bargain with strong value and a well-rounded ownership proposition.

Hyundai’s warranty coverage and included maintenance perks add to the case for long-term confidence, especially if you want lower early ownership costs. For used buyers, the main risk is making sure the specific car you choose has been maintained well and hasn’t picked up avoidable wear from prior use.

What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Hyundai Elantra?

At 67.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a higher-mileage example or one priced near the low end of the market. Focus on overall condition, signs of prior bodywork, and whether the car’s features and trim equipment match the listing.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The SE, SEL, N Line, and Limited trims differ in cabin quality, technology, and overall polish, with the higher trims feeling nicer and more high-tech.
• Powertrain: The standard 2.0-liter four-cylinder makes 147 horsepower and uses a CVT, while the hybrid setup pairs a 1.6-liter engine with an electric motor and a six-speed DCT for stronger efficiency.
• Safety package: SmartSense is standard and includes forward collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assistance, lane-centering assistance, automatic high-beam headlights, and driver attention warning; blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic warning, Rear Occupant Alert, and Safe Exit Warning are also standard.
• Infotainment: An 8-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto is standard on SE, SEL, and N Line, while Limited gets a 10.25-inch touchscreen with navigation and a 10.25-inch digital instrument screen.
• Fuel efficiency: The standard engine is rated at 35 mpg in combined driving with 17-inch wheels, the hybrid SEL is rated at 54 mpg combined, the hybrid Limited is rated at 50 mpg combined, and the N Line is rated at 28 mpg combined.

Which 2021 Hyundai Elantra trim should I buy?

The 2021 Hyundai Elantra is offered in 4 trim levels: SE, SEL, N Line, and Limited.

Here's the short version:

• SE: This is the entry point, and it gives you the core Elantra experience with standard SmartSense safety tech, wireless smartphone integration, and the redesigned car’s standout styling at the lowest price.
• SEL: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds more convenience and tech while staying below the higher-priced versions.
• N Line: Choose this if you want the sportier setup, including the turbocharged engine, manual transmission, sport suspension tuning, quicker steering, and larger brakes.
• Limited: This is the most upscale choice, with the 10.25-inch dual-screen setup, navigation, ambient lighting, and the most refined cabin presentation.

Safety-wise, every version gets SmartSense, plus blind-spot warning and rear cross-traffic warning, so you’re not forced into a higher trim just to get the core driver-assistance suite.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Hyundai Elantra?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.

• Deal availability: 34.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 2,123 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 4.52% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 67.1% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $15,365, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2021 Hyundai Elantra's resale value?

The current average of $15,431 sits slightly below last year's $16,162.

That decline suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you as a buyer but may temper near-term resale expectations if you plan to sell later. If you buy at a strong price and keep the car in clean condition, you’ll be better positioned to limit depreciation pressure.

The Elantra’s broad appeal, strong value reputation, and solid owner satisfaction should help support demand over time. Cars that combine good features with strong owner approval tend to stay relevant in the used market longer.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2021 Hyundai Elantra safe?

The 2021 Hyundai Elantra earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

Every 2021 Elantra comes with SmartSense, Hyundai’s standard driver-assistance suite. That includes forward collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assistance, lane-centering assistance, automatic high-beam headlights, and driver attention warning. It also includes blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic warning, Rear Occupant Alert, and Safe Exit Warning.

Higher trims add more advanced safety tech, including cyclist detection, junction turning assistance, adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability, rear automatic braking, and Highway Drive Assist. That means the core safety package is broad even on lower trims, while the more advanced features are reserved for better-equipped versions.

Should I buy a 2021 Hyundai Elantra or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

• At 67.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 4.52% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The redesigned model brings standout style, strong technology, and excellent value.

Consider the 2020 if:

• It adds value-focused improvements like free maintenance and new standard safety features.

Consider the 2022 if:

• At $16,862, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $15,431 average.
• It builds on the redesign with more standard safety tech and strong overall value.

The bottom line: If you want the best mix of style, tech, and value, the 2021 is the sweet spot. If your priority is saving money, the 2020 is the cheaper path; if you want a newer-feeling follow-up with more standard equipment, the 2022 is worth a look.
