CarGurus Analysis: 2021 GMC Yukon XL

Summary
With 1,455 currently listed for sale and an average price of $40,755, 32.5% of 2021 GMC Yukons XLs for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2021 GMC Yukon XL 5 / 5 stars.

Why it stands out
The 2021 GMC Yukon XL stands out as a full-size SUV that emphasizes space, comfort, and a more modern driving feel than its predecessor. For 2021, it gained a new independent rear suspension that replaced the old solid rear axle, a change that improved ride and handling while also helping create a more comfortable third-row seat and additional cargo capacity. It also kept the Yukon XL’s core advantage of stretching the wheelbase by more than a foot, which translates into more room for passengers and luggage.
That year’s lineup was broad and clearly aimed at different kinds of buyers. The base SLE included an 18-inch wheel setup, LED headlamps, a 10.2-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, eight-passenger seating, and automatic emergency braking with forward-collision warning. The SLT added more comfort with heated and ventilated front seats, leather seating surfaces, and a power liftgate, while the AT4 brought standard four-wheel drive, skid plates, front recovery hooks, and all-terrain tires for buyers who wanted a more rugged personality. At the top, the Denali came standard with a 420-horsepower 6.2L V8 engine, navigation, and a 14-speaker Bose audio system, giving the Yukon XL a distinctly upscale character.
The 2021 model also offered useful technology and convenience features that fit its mission as a large family hauler. Available equipment included a power sliding center console, four-corner air ride adaptive suspension, a blind-spot monitor, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-keep assist, a surround vision system, and a head-up display. Owners’ praise for the 2021 GMC Yukon XL lines up with that formula, especially its luxury feel, spacious interior, comfort on long trips, and strong engine performance. The main drawbacks are the expected ones for a vehicle this size: some buyers want better brakes, and others prefer the diesel option over the gasoline engines.

Getting the diesel was the best decision! Far superior to the gasoline engine options.

The vehicle provides passenger comfort for lengthy travel. The driver is provided information within his view for safe driving and locating turns. There is abundant storage room and the third row allows a large group to travel together

I am really surprised with this vehicle. It’s massive, but even as big as it is, it’s very agile and easy to drive. The engine has enough power to push this beast in and out of right situations. I do wish the brakes had a bit more to them but all in all fun to drive. Doesn’t feel like a us. The interior is well appointed and looks fantastic.

How much does the 2021 GMC Yukon XL cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $40,704 |
| Year-Round Low | $40,704 |
| Year-Round High | $47,061 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $47,053 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −13.49% |
Prices have softened 13.49% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 1,458 listings available, which gives you a meaningful amount of inventory to compare.
Is the 2021 GMC Yukon XL a good car?
Yes — owners rate it 5/5, which is a strong sign that it delivers on what shoppers want in a large SUV. The owner feedback consistently points to a luxury feel, a spacious interior, and comfort on long trips, while also noting that it feels agile for its size and offers strong engine performance. In practical terms, that makes it a good fit if you want a full-size SUV that prioritizes passenger room and road-trip comfort. With 33.3% of listings marked as good or great deals, you still have room to shop selectively.
Is the 2021 GMC Yukon XL reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback also emphasizes that it feels dependable for daily use and long trips, with praise centered on comfort and the confidence that comes from a vehicle people expect to count on. That said, used buyers should still pay close attention to maintenance records and overall condition, since long-term ownership risk is always tied to how the vehicle was cared for.
What should I look for when buying a used 2021 GMC Yukon XL?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 76.2% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should start with the history report so you can confirm accident status, title history, and service records before you get too far into the process. Then prioritize a thorough inspection of the brakes, since that is one of the main concerns owners raise, and pay close attention to overall wear because this is a large SUV that may have seen heavy family or towing use. It also makes sense to focus on how the vehicle drives and whether its comfort features, electronics, and seating surfaces are in the condition you expect for the price.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 GMC Yukon XL?
This is a moderate market for buyers, so you can shop carefully without feeling rushed.
- Deal availability: 33.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,458 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 13.49% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 76.2% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $40,704, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2021 GMC Yukon XL's resale value?
The current average of $40,704 sits slightly below last year's $47,053.
That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable point if you plan to keep the vehicle for a while. For a future seller, the key takeaway is that a lower entry price can reduce depreciation pressure if the market stabilizes. Strong condition, clean history, and desirable equipment should matter even more when you eventually resell.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2021 GMC Yukon XL or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2021 if:
- 33.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 76.2% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 13.49% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: If you want the more modern-feeling Yukon XL with strong owner satisfaction and a market that has become more favorable, the 2021 is the primary year to target. If your top priority is stretching your budget, a nearby older year may be worth considering, but you should expect to trade away some of the 2021’s newer design and comfort advantages.
