CarGurus Analysis: 2021 GMC Canyon
overall

Summary
With 78 currently listed for sale near Toledo, OH and an average price of $30,369, 15.4% of 2021 GMC Canyons for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2021 GMC Canyon 4.25 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.33 / 10.
83.3% of 2021 Canyon models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2021 GMC Canyon stands out as a refreshed midsize pickup that gets a new face and an AT4 off-road-inspired trim while remaining largely the same truck underneath. That combination gives it a more modern look without changing its basic formula, which should appeal to buyers who want a truck that feels a bit more distinctive than before but still familiar. It also keeps the Canyon in the sweet spot for shoppers who want something smaller than a full-size pickup without giving up the utility of a truck bed.
What makes the 2021 GMC Canyon appealing is its mix of capability and flexibility. The truck is noted for impressive towing and payload ratings, multiple powertrain options, and multiple body styles, so it can be tailored to different needs. It also offers helpful features that make it a good fit for weekend adventures or projects. At the same time, it is not without drawbacks: the interior materials feel cheap, the back seat is cramped, and the base engine is underwhelming. Owners also praise its value, appearance, and feature content, though some mention a stiff, loud ride and note that the diesel engine can feel short on power in certain situations.

First off, I Love my truck, however with that being said, I wish the back up camera had the overhead view. I also don’t understand having to have the radio/computer updated at a cost to the consumer. Otherwise, again, I love my truck.

In context, this is a midsize pickup aimed at you if you want something smaller than a full-size truck but still want bed utility and weekend versatility. 29.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2021 GMC Canyon reliable?
Owners rate it 4.25/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
Owner feedback points to a truck that feels value-rich, feature-packed, and appealing enough to keep buyers happy over time. The review summary also suggests it can be a dependable choice for shoppers who want a truck they can count on, especially if you value a more premium-feeling cabin for the money.
The expert review also describes it as a capable, enjoyable pickup, which supports the idea that it should be a reasonable long-term ownership bet if you buy a well-kept example. If you’re shopping used, the biggest risk is ending up with a truck that has been worked hard or maintained inconsistently.
What should I look for when buying a used 2021 GMC Canyon?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 78.4% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still run a history report on any truck you’re considering, even if the listing looks clean at first glance. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the truck has towing, off-road, or high-mileage use in its past. Focus on overall condition, because this model’s value depends heavily on how well it was cared for.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The Elevation Standard is the base trim and comes with 18-inch gloss-black aluminum wheels, signature LED running lights, the CornerStep rear bumper, black door handles and side mirrors, manually adjustable front seats, power locks, two USB ports, and a 7-inch touchscreen. The Elevation adds LED fog lights, remote start, body-color door handles, a manually sliding rear window, a six-way power driver’s seat, automatic climate control, auto-dimming rearview mirror, and aluminum interior accents. The AT4 is the off-road-inspired premium trim level with 17-inch dark metallic aluminum wheels, aggressive all-terrain tires, red tow hooks, off-road suspension, and underbody skid plates. The Denali adds polished aluminum wheels, polished exhaust tip, chrome side steps, chrome door handles, LED bed lighting, a spray-on bed-liner, a four-way power-adjustable front passenger seat, an 8-inch infotainment system, Bose premium audio, heated-and-cooled front seats, and a wireless charging pad.
- Powertrain: The standard 2.5-liter four-cylinder makes 200 horsepower and 191 pound-feet of torque with a six-speed automatic, but it has to work hard. A 3.6-liter V6 is optional on the Elevation trims and standard on the AT4 and Denali, making 308 hp and 275 lb-ft with an eight-speed automatic. A 2.8-liter Duramax four-cylinder turbodiesel is also available, with 181 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque and a six-speed automatic. The diesel can tow up to 7,700 pounds and delivers strong torque, while the V6 is the better all-around choice than the base engine.
- Safety package: Standard safety features include a rearview camera, tire pressure monitoring system, front-and-side-impact airbags, traction control, and the Teen Driver system. The available Driver Alert package adds forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning, and rear parking alert, and it is standard on the Denali and optional on other trim levels. The Denali also gets an upgraded HD backup camera and Hitch Guidance.
- Infotainment: The standard setup is a 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. An 8-inch screen is optional on the Elevation and AT4 trims and standard on the Denali. The Denali also adds navigation, HD radio, a wireless charging pad, and a 4.2-inch color driver display.
- Fuel efficiency: The diesel returns 20 mpg city, 30 mpg highway, 23 combined in rear-wheel drive and 19 mpg city, 28 highway, 22 combined with four-wheel drive. The base four-cylinder returns 19 mpg city, 25 highway, 22 combined in rear-wheel drive and 19 mpg city, 24 highway, 21 combined with four-wheel drive. The gas V6 returns 18 mpg city, 25 highway, 21 combined in rear-wheel drive and 17 mpg city, 24 highway, 19 combined with four-wheel drive.
Which 2021 GMC Canyon trim should I buy?
The 2021 GMC Canyon is offered in 4 trim levels: Elevation Standard, Elevation, AT4, and Denali.
Here's the short version:
- Elevation Standard: This is the least expensive way into the Canyon, and it gives you the core truck basics plus the 7-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. It makes sense if you want the Canyon’s styling and utility without paying for extras.
- Elevation: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds useful everyday upgrades like remote start, automatic climate control, a power driver’s seat, and more exterior polish without jumping all the way to the premium trims.
- AT4: This is the one to choose if you want the off-road-inspired setup, with all-terrain tires, skid plates, tow hooks, and off-road suspension. It also gets the V6 and 4WD, so it suits you if weekend adventure matters more than price.
- Denali: This is the luxury-leaning choice, with the most upscale features, the larger infotainment screen, Bose audio, heated-and-cooled front seats, and more convenience equipment. It’s the trim to buy if you want the most content and don’t mind paying for it.
The Driver Alert package is standard on the Denali and optional on the other trims, so that’s worth prioritizing if you want the extra driver-assistance features.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 GMC Canyon?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.
- Deal availability: 29.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,189 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.54% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 78.4% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $27,943, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2021 GMC Canyon's resale value?
The current average of $28,025 sits slightly below last year's $30,311.
That price movement suggests the Canyon has softened enough to create a better entry point for you as a buyer, but it also means a future seller may need to price competitively. If you buy well and keep the truck in good condition, you can help protect your resale position.
The current range also shows that values have stayed fairly contained, which can help reduce the risk of a sharp drop after purchase. Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.25/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2021 GMC Canyon safe?
The 2021 GMC Canyon earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.
Standard safety features include a rearview camera, tire pressure monitoring system, front-and-side-impact airbags, traction control, and the Teen Driver system. The available Driver Alert package adds forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning, and rear parking alert, and it is standard on the Denali and optional on other trim levels. The Denali also gets an upgraded HD backup camera and Hitch Guidance.
Should I buy a 2021 GMC Canyon or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2021 if:
- 29.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 78.4% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.54% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.25/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- The refreshed look and new AT4 trim make it feel more modern without changing the truck’s basic formula.
Consider the 2022 if:
- At $30,540, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $28,025 average.
- It adds a Denali Black Edition package and renames Elevation Premium.
The bottom line: If you want the better value, the 2021 is the smarter buy because prices are softer and inventory is healthy. If you’re willing to pay more for a slightly updated feature set, the 2022 is the cleaner upgrade path.
