Why it stands out
The 2021 Ford F-150 stands out because Ford redesigned its bestseller with more technology and an available hybrid powertrain. It keeps the truck’s bold styling but adds a revamped interior with more convenience features and the new Sync 4 infotainment system. Ford also offers a wide range of choices, including six trim levels, three cab configurations, three bed sizes, six powertrains, and rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive, which makes the F-150 especially flexible for buyers who want to tailor a full-size pickup to specific needs.
That breadth is a major part of the appeal, and the available PowerBoost hybrid is especially notable because it is the first time Ford has offered an F-150 hybrid. The truck’s strengths also include multiple body styles, multiple powertrain options, and impressive technology. At the same time, the base engine is described as underwhelming, the interior materials feel cheap, and advanced safety features are not standard, so the 2021 F-150 is best understood as a highly configurable pickup that emphasizes capability and tech while still leaving room for improvement in some entry-level areas.

The XLT 302A is the best bang for your buck. The powerboost motor has amazing fuel economy without sacrificing power, plus you get the benefit of a mobile generator. There is a lot of tech in this truck, so time will tell as far as quality, but so far, this truck is perfect.

Owners consistently praise its powerful performance, modern technology, and excellent ride comfort. They also like the fuel efficiency of the smaller engines and the truck’s versatility, which makes it a fit for commuting, family duty, and work use.
The trade-offs are familiar: the base engine is underwhelming, the interior materials feel cheap, and advanced safety features are not standard. That means you should think of this as a highly configurable truck that shines when you move beyond the entry-level setup.
With 28.8% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have room to shop selectively.
Is the 2021 Ford F-150 reliable?
Owners rate it 4.84/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback also points to a truck that feels dependable, with praise for its strong performance, versatility, and comfort over time. That kind of repeat-positive feedback matters when you’re trying to judge whether a used truck will keep feeling solid after the honeymoon period.
The expert evaluation also highlights good road manners and user-friendly tech, which supports the sense that this is a truck built to be lived with every day. Ford’s warranty coverage is about average for the segment, so your long-term ownership risk will depend heavily on how well the truck was maintained and used.
What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Ford F-150?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 84.1% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still run a history report on any truck you’re serious about, even if the listing looks clean. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that checks the drivetrain, electronics, and signs of hard use, since trucks can hide wear better than many cars. Focus on condition, maintenance records, and whether the equipment you want is actually present on the specific truck you’re considering.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The lineup ranges from work-focused to luxurious, and the base XL trim is much more spartan than higher trims such as King Ranch, Platinum, and Limited. If you want a nicer cabin, look for the trims with upgraded materials and features rather than assuming every F-150 feels the same.
- Powertrain: You get a wide spread of engines, from the 3.3-liter V6 to the 5.0-liter V8, twin-turbo EcoBoost V6 options, a Power Stroke diesel, and the PowerBoost hybrid. The hybrid is the most powerful setup, but the non-hybrid 3.5-liter EcoBoost is the better choice if maximum towing matters more than fuel savings.
- Safety package: Ford Co-Pilot360 includes forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and automatic high beams. Lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise control, hill-descent control, and intersection assist are extra-cost items, so check carefully if you want more advanced driver assistance.
- Infotainment: Sync 4 brings an 8-inch standard touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and over-the-air updates. Higher trims can add a 12-inch touchscreen and a 12-inch digital instrument cluster.
- Fuel efficiency: The PowerBoost hybrid returns 25 mpg combined with rear-wheel drive and 24 mpg combined with four-wheel drive. The 2.7-liter EcoBoost matches the hybrid’s highway mpg, while the Power Stroke diesel is rated at 27 mpg highway with 4WD.
Which 2021 Ford F-150 trim should I buy?
The 2021 Ford F-150 is offered in 6 trim levels: XL, XLT, Lariat, King Ranch, Platinum, and Limited.
Here's the short version:
- XL: This is the most basic version, and the materials are described as spartan compared with the higher trims. It makes sense if you want the lowest entry point and care more about utility than cabin polish.
- XLT: This is the trim most buyers should start with if they want a better balance of equipment and value. It gives you a more livable setup than the XL without jumping straight to the luxury-focused trims.
- Lariat: This is the step up if you want more comfort and convenience without going all the way to the premium end of the lineup. It should appeal if you want a nicer daily driver that still feels like a truck.
- King Ranch: This trim adds a more upscale feel, including leather upholstery and wood trim, and it was the test vehicle used in the expert review. It suits you if you want a premium cabin and don’t mind paying for it.
- Platinum: This is another upscale choice aimed at buyers who want a more luxurious F-150 experience. It belongs on your shortlist if cabin refinement matters a lot.
- Limited: This is the top-end choice for shoppers who want the most premium version of the truck. It makes the most sense if you want maximum comfort and feature content.
Advanced safety features are not standard, so check the exact equipment list on any trim you’re considering.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Ford F-150?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop carefully without expecting a deep bargain on every truck.
- Deal availability: 28.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 9,626 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.23% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 84.1% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $33,078.90, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2021 Ford F-150's resale value?
The current average of $33,148 sits slightly below last year's $35,349.
That decline suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable point in the cycle. For a future seller, it also means your resale outcome will depend heavily on trim, condition, mileage, and equipment rather than just model-year desirability.
Because the truck has broad appeal and strong owner satisfaction, well-kept examples should continue to attract buyers. Higher-spec trucks with desirable features are likely to hold up better than bare-bones versions.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.84/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2021 Ford F-150 safe?
It earns a good roof-strength rating from the IIHS.
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
Ford Co-Pilot360 is the standard driver-assistance suite, and it includes forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and automatic high beams. Lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise control, hill-descent control, and intersection assist are available, but they cost extra.
The main caveat is that full crash-test ratings from NHTSA and IIHS were not yet available when this truck launched, so you should pay close attention to the exact safety equipment on the truck you’re shopping.
Should I buy a 2021 Ford F-150 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2021 if:
- 28.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 84.1% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.23% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.84/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The redesign adds Sync 4, an available PowerBoost hybrid, and a much broader mix of configurations.
Consider the 2020 if:
- At $28,889, the 2020 costs less than the current year's $33,148 average.
- It balances everyday comfort with real work capability.
The bottom line: If you want the redesigned truck with more tech, more powertrain variety, and stronger market selection, the 2021 is the better all-around pick. If your priority is spending less up front and you’re comfortable with the older setup, the 2020 is the smarter value play.
