2021 Chevrolet Bolt EV test drive
overall

The Bolt EV is almost the template for the ideal affordable EV commuter car… almost.
Spend any time reading the news, and you’ll likely read about electric vehicles. They are influencing the stock prices of major automakers, and in turn, those automakers are investing heavily into a burgeoning market of EV startups. And yet, electric cars make up an incredibly small portion of the new car market. For all the news and hype, there are only a handful of actual models on the road today. They fall into two categories: larger, luxury-minded EVs like those offered by Tesla, and smaller, minimalist offerings such as the Nissan Leaf and the 2021 Chevrolet Bolt EV.
Like the Leaf, the Bolt does things differently from Tesla. It uses a smaller battery pack and maximizes the efficiency of its nimble platform. The Bolt EV does not have the range or acceleration of the Teslas, but for many Americans, an EV like the Bolt EV is something closer to what they can afford. But is the Bolt EV right for you? Read on to learn more about this economic electric vehicle.

Pros: -LOVE how it drives and handles the road -Feels spacious despite being compact -Easy features to use -No more gas and limited maintenance! -Awesome battery range Cons (especially related to the LT trim level): -Road noise is still very loud even though its nothing is coming from your engine. -6-speaker sound system absolutely sucks -Missing spot or sunglasses -No USB-c -No leather seats -No all-weather mats -No electric seat adjustments -Lots of plastic on the interior -No window tinting -No automatic windshield wipers -No 3D backup camera view -Get get the stupid XM radio to stop blasting me out every time I turn on my car (Apple Car play is much quieter) The 2022 (especially the 2LT trim level) looks like it is a very nice upgrade on the interior compared to the 2021.

Best value for the money anywhere really nice for driving. Really nice for maintenance and really nice. If you do have to work on it it’s very simple insurance cost are low. Initial cost to purchase is low really hard to beat. Rear seat Comfort is excellent. Front seat Comfort also excellent . handles very well. Accelerates beautiful , can pass most others in a heartbeat if you’re talking about gas cars.

How much does the 2021 Chevrolet Bolt EV cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $17,157 |
| Year-Round Low | $14,268.35 |
| Year-Round High | $17,214.49 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $15,226 |
| Change vs. Last Year | +12.68% |
Prices are up 12.68% year-over-year — a sign of continued demand for this model year.
There are 161 listings available, which gives you a modest amount of inventory to compare before you buy.
If you find a listing below $14,268.35, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2021 Chevrolet Bolt EV a good car?
The 2021 Chevrolet Bolt EV is a solid fit if you want an affordable electric commuter with strong everyday usability, though it comes with a few comfort and materials compromises. It earns a 3.8/5 user rating and a 7.17/10 expert rating.
The model scores 8/10 across Look and feel, Technology, and Safety.
Owners consistently praise its driving experience, spaciousness, impressive battery range, low maintenance costs, and value for money. That lines up well with its commuter-focused mission in the overview, where it’s positioned as an accessible EV for buyers who want electric ownership without moving into a pricier segment.
The trade-offs are clear: the interior materials feel cheap, the seats are uncomfortable, and road noise can be loud. The expert review also points to a clunky, laggy infotainment layout and a setup that can feel confusing in daily use.
Good and great deals account for 30.4% of listings, so you still have some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2021 Chevrolet Bolt EV reliable?
The 2021 Chevrolet Bolt EV is framed as a practical daily commuter, and owner feedback supports that with praise for low maintenance costs and a trouble-free-feeling ownership experience. The expert review also emphasizes its efficient, around-town focus and notes that the battery pack is protected by an eight-year/100,000-mile warranty.
That combination makes it appealing if you want an EV you can count on for routine driving, especially with home charging as the easiest way to keep it ready. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is making sure the battery and charging history are healthy before you commit.
What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Chevrolet Bolt EV?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 87.6% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still check the report carefully, because accident-free listings are common but not guaranteed. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that focuses on battery condition, charging behavior, and any signs of uneven wear or neglected maintenance. Since this is an EV, you should also think about how the car was charged over time and whether it has been used mostly for home charging or frequent fast charging.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The LT comes standard with alloy wheels, remote start, a 10.2-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, WiFi hotspot, automatic climate control, dual USB ports, Bluetooth connectivity, and satellite radio. The Premier adds leather upholstery, a rear center armrest, heated front seats, heated rear seats, a heated steering wheel, and a removable cargo load floor.
- Powertrain: It uses a front-wheel-drive electric motor with a 66-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack, 200 horsepower, and 266 pound-feet of torque. The instant torque helps it feel quick around town, and the claimed zero-to-60-mph time is 6.5 seconds.
- Safety package: Chevy’s Teen Driver feature is standard, while the Driver Confidence I package adds rear parking sensors, lane-change alert, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. The Driver Confidence II package on the Premier adds automatic high beams, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, a following distance indicator, lane-departure warning, and lane-keep assist.
- Infotainment: The standard setup includes a 10.2-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The system also includes a customizable fully digital instrument panel and a smartphone app for charging-status monitoring.
- Range & charging: It has an EPA range of 259 miles and a 66-kWh battery pack. Level 1 charging adds about four miles of range per hour, Level 2 adds about 25 miles per hour, and DC fast charging can add up to 100 miles of range in 30 minutes.
- Battery health: Check the battery state of health, confirm normal charging behavior, and review how often the car relied on DC fast charging versus home charging. You should also confirm how much of the battery warranty remains.
Which 2021 Chevrolet Bolt EV trim should I buy?
The 2021 Chevrolet Bolt EV is offered in 2 trim levels: LT and Premier.
Here's the short version:
- LT: This is the value pick if you want the Bolt EV’s core strengths at the lowest entry point. You still get the 10.2-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, WiFi hotspot, automatic climate control, and the efficiency-focused cabin layout, but you miss the Premier’s comfort upgrades and the available advanced driver-assistance packages.
- Premier: This is the better choice if you want a more comfortable daily driver. It adds leather upholstery, heated front and rear seats, a heated steering wheel, and a removable cargo load floor, and it can be equipped with the more comprehensive Driver Confidence II safety package. If you want the best-value trim, this is the one to consider only if those comfort and safety upgrades matter to you.
The safety-package gap matters here: several advanced driver-assistance features are optional rather than standard, so you should check exactly which package a used example has.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Chevrolet Bolt EV?

- Inventory: There are 161 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices are up 12.68% year-over-year.

If you find a listing below $14,268.35, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2021 Chevrolet Bolt EV's resale value?
The current average of $17,157 sits slightly above last year's $15,226.
That upward move suggests the market has been willing to pay more for this model year, which can help if you sell later. It also means you may not see the kind of steep depreciation that some shoppers expect from older EVs.
For a future seller, the key takeaway is that demand has been strong enough to support pricing. If you keep mileage reasonable and the battery remains in good condition, you should be in a better position to hold value than if the car shows heavy use or charging-related wear.
Is the 2021 Chevrolet Bolt EV safe?
It earns a five-star overall rating from NHTSA and a 2019 Top Safety Pick from IIHS.
It earns a 8/10 safety score from our experts.
Chevy’s Teen Driver feature is standard, and the Bolt EV also includes the usual airbags, traction control, and a backup camera. The Driver Confidence I package adds rear parking sensors, lane-change alert, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert, while the Driver Confidence II package on the Premier adds automatic high beams, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, a following distance indicator, lane-departure warning, and lane-keep assist.
A key caveat is that most advanced driver-assistance features are not standard, so you need to verify whether a used example has the package you want.
Should I buy a 2021 Chevrolet Bolt EV or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2021 if:
- 30.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 87.6% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices are up 12.68% year-over-year.
- It delivers strong range, a spacious cabin, and low-maintenance EV ownership in a compact commuter package.
Consider the 2022 if:
- It adds standard DC fast charging and a bolder new look.
The bottom line: The 2021 is the better path if you want the Bolt EV’s core value and can find a clean, well-priced example. If you’re price-sensitive, the 2021 still makes sense because it offers the same practical range and commuter-friendly setup, but you should compare it carefully with the 2022 if standard fast charging matters to you.
