Is the 2021 Chevrolet Bolt EV a good car?

It’s a strong fit if you want an affordable EV that prioritizes practicality, range, and everyday usability over luxury polish. The user rating is 3.8/5, and the expert rating is 7.2/10.

The model scores 8/10 across Look and feel, Technology, and Safety.

Drivers consistently praise the spacious cabin, impressive battery range, and enjoyable driving experience. They also like the low maintenance costs and overall value for money.

The main trade-offs are cheap-feeling interior materials and uncomfortable seats, and the expert review also points to confusing controls and laggy screen behavior.

That lines up with the Bolt EV’s role as a practical commuter EV with usable room inside and a value-first mission. If you want an economical electric daily driver rather than a premium-feeling one, it fits that brief well.

Only 28.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so the market still rewards selective shopping.

Is the 2021 Chevrolet Bolt EV reliable?

The Bolt EV is presented as a practical electric commuter, and owners highlight low maintenance costs along with strong value for money.

Drivers also describe it as dependable for daily use, with praise centered on its trouble-free feel, strong range, and long-term usefulness.

The expert review reinforces that theme by emphasizing the Bolt EV’s efficient layout, low center of gravity, and around-town ease of use.

The battery pack is covered by an eight-year/100,000-mile warranty, which helps reduce long-term ownership risk for used buyers, but you should still check battery health and charging behavior carefully.

What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Chevrolet Bolt EV?

Accident-free inventory is solid at 83.1% — always verify the vehicle history report.

You should still check the vehicle history report, confirm the battery and charging system behave normally, and prioritize a pre-purchase inspection. Focus on cabin condition too, since the interior materials and seats are common weak points.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The LT comes with alloy wheels, remote start, a 10.2-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, WiFi hotspot, automatic climate control, dual USB ports, Bluetooth connectivity, and satellite radio. The Premier adds leather upholstery, a rear center armrest, heated front seats, heated rear seats, a heated steering wheel, and a removable cargo load floor. The Premier is the better-equipped choice, while the LT is the value pick if you want the essentials.
• Powertrain: The Bolt EV uses a front-wheel-drive electric setup with a 66-kilowatt-hour battery pack, 200 horsepower, and 266 pound-feet of torque. It delivers strong low-end pickup and is especially well suited to city driving.
• Safety package: Chevy’s Teen Driver feature is standard, but most advanced driver-assistance features are bundled into option packages. Driver Confidence I adds rear parking sensors, lane-change alert, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. Driver Confidence II adds automatic high beams, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, a following distance indicator, lane-departure warning, and lane-keep assist.
• Infotainment: The LT includes a 10.2-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The system is standard, but the layout can feel clunky and laggy.
• Range & charging: The Bolt EV has an estimated 259-mile range. Level 1 charging adds about four miles of range per hour, Level 2 charging adds about 25 miles per hour, and DC fast charging can add up to 100 miles in 30 minutes on the Premier.
• Battery health: For a used EV, check battery state-of-health, confirm the car charges normally at home and on DC fast chargers, and review how much of the battery warranty remains.

Which 2021 Chevrolet Bolt EV trim should I buy?

The 2021 Chevrolet Bolt EV is offered in 2 trim levels: LT and Premier.

Here's the short version:

• Premier: This is the better-equipped trim if you want a more comfortable cabin. It adds leather upholstery, heated front and rear seats, a heated steering wheel, and a removable cargo load floor. If you want the best mix of comfort and convenience, this is the one to target.

The safety package is mostly optional, so check whether the car you’re considering has Driver Confidence I or Driver Confidence II.

Most advanced driver-assistance features are optional, with Driver Confidence I adding rear parking sensors, lane-change alert, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. Driver Confidence II adds automatic high beams, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, a following distance indicator, lane-departure warning, and lane-keep assist.

Should I buy a 2021 Chevrolet Bolt EV or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2021 if:

• 28.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is solid at 83.1% — always verify the vehicle history report.
• Price trend: Prices are up 11.30% year-over-year.
• It offers strong range, practical value, and a well-rounded commuter focus.

Consider the 2022 if:

• At $18,931, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $16,963 average.
• It adds standard DC fast charging.

The bottom line: Choose the 2021 if you want the lower entry price and a proven value-focused EV. Move to the 2022 if standard DC fast charging matters enough to justify the higher average price; otherwise, the 2021 is the smarter buy for price-sensitive shoppers.
