Why it stands out
The 2021 BMW 5 Series stands out as a midsize luxury sedan that blends sportier-than-average driving dynamics with the tech and luxury features expected in its class. BMW’s current generation arrived for the 2017 model year, and the 2021 model gets a midcycle refresh with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system, a bigger infotainment touchscreen, and subtle styling changes. That combination helps the car feel modern without abandoning the balanced character that made earlier 5 Series models so well regarded.
It also appeals to buyers with multiple powertrain options, great ride quality, and impressive technology. At the same time, it is not aimed squarely at hardcore enthusiasts, and advanced safety features are not standard. For shoppers who want a refined luxury sedan with strong everyday appeal, the 2021 BMW 5 Series offers a compelling mix of comfort, performance, and equipment.

I like everything about the car except the feature that kills the engine when stopped. I realize that this is not a problem in Sport Mode, but Sport Mode is a little too jumpy in this 540i. I run my 540d in Sport mode exclusively and it’s torque curve is perfect. The 540d has better power at all speeds.

Excellent Car, Real Rocket with 550 trim or M5 variants. Great for a long trip and if you are in a state that dont require the UGLY front license plate it shows how elegant the lines are. I LOVE mine.

How much does the 2021 BMW 5 Series cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $28,963 |
| Year-Round Low | $28,653.67 |
| Year-Round High | $31,815.90 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $31,800 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −8.92% |
Prices have softened 8.92% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 791 listings available, which suggests solid inventory for comparison shopping.
If you find a listing below $28,653.67, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2021 BMW 5 Series a good car?
Yes — the 2021 BMW 5 Series earns a 5/5 user rating and an 8/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Technology and Safety.
Owners consistently praise its powerful performance, luxurious comfort, and refined interior, and they also like the handling and overall aesthetic details. On the downside, some drivers find the engine auto-off behavior at stops annoying, and the Sport Mode can feel jumpy at times.
That lines up with the car’s use case: it’s a midsize luxury sedan that blends sportier-than-average driving dynamics with the tech and comfort you expect in this class. It’s a strong fit if you want a refined daily driver with multiple powertrain choices and a premium feel, and the market shows 29.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
Is the 2021 BMW 5 Series reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a car that feels refined, comfortable, and well-liked over time, with praise centered on the kind of ownership experience that tends to feel dependable rather than troublesome. The expert review also describes the 5 Series as a polished luxury sedan with impeccable engineering and a mature, well-sorted character.
BMW’s mild-hybrid setup adds efficiency support and powers accessories like lights, climate control, and power windows, which helps the car feel modern in everyday use. BMW also backs the car with a four-year or 50,000-mile warranty and four years of roadside assistance.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that a luxury sedan with more equipment can still bring higher upkeep costs if it has been neglected or optioned heavily.
What should I look for when buying a used 2021 BMW 5 Series?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 77.1% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still check the history report carefully, because a clean title alone does not tell you how the car was maintained or repaired. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that focuses on electronics, suspension behavior, brake feel, and any signs that the car has been driven hard or poorly serviced. Pay close attention to trim and option content, since the 5 Series can vary a lot in comfort, tech, and driver-assistance equipment.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: Lower trims get standard SensaTec upholstery rather than real leather, while Dakota leather and Nappa leather are available at extra cost. The M Sport Package adds new front and rear bumpers, and the cabin’s upscale feel depends heavily on how the car was optioned.
- Powertrain: The 530i uses a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder with 248 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. The 540i adds a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six and a 48-volt mild-hybrid system, while the 530e plug-in hybrid combines a four-cylinder engine with an electric motor.
- Safety package: Standard safety features include lane-departure warning, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, and automatic high beams. The Driving Assistance Plus Package adds adaptive cruise control, traffic-jam assist, lane-keep assist, and emergency stop assist.
- Infotainment: You get a standard 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen with iDrive 7, plus a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster. Apple CarPlay/Android Auto compatibility, Bluetooth, SiriusXM 360L satellite radio, and a built-in WiFi hotspot are also standard.
- Fuel efficiency: The 540i is rated at 26 mpg combined, 23 mpg city, and 31 mpg highway.
Which 2021 BMW 5 Series trim should I buy?
The 2021 BMW 5 Series is offered in 3 trim levels: 530i, 540i, 530e.
Here's the short version:
- 530i: This is the entry point, but it still brings a 248-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder, rear-wheel drive, and an eight-speed automatic. It makes sense if you want the lowest starting price and still care about the 5 Series driving feel.
- 540i: This is the best-value choice for most shoppers because it adds the stronger 3.0-liter inline-six, the 48-volt mild-hybrid system, and a much quicker 0-60 mph time. If you want the most balanced mix of performance and luxury, this is the one to target.
- 530e: Choose this if you want plug-in hybrid capability and the ability to drive on electric power for significant distances. It suits buyers who prioritize efficiency and short electric-only trips over outright performance.
The standard safety equipment is solid, but the more advanced driver-assistance features remain in the Driving Assistance Plus Package, so check whether a used example has that package before you buy.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 BMW 5 Series?
This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you have room to compare listings and wait for the right car.
- Deal availability: 29.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 791 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.92% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 77.1% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $28,653.67, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2021 BMW 5 Series's resale value?
The current average of $28,963 sits slightly below last year's $31,800.
That price movement suggests the market has cooled, which can help you buy more selectively now but may also mean slower appreciation if you plan to resell soon. For a future seller, the key takeaway is that a well-kept example with the right equipment should still attract interest, but you should not expect a strong short-term price rebound. Cars with desirable powertrains, clean history, and strong presentation should hold up better than neglected examples.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2021 BMW 5 Series safe?
The virtually-identical 2020 model received a Top Safety Pick+ award from IIHS, with top “good” scores in all crash tests and front-crash prevention tests. The standard headlights were rated “marginal,” while optional lights received a “good” rating.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Standard safety features include lane-departure warning, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, and automatic high beams. The Driving Assistance Plus Package adds adaptive cruise control, traffic-jam assist, lane-keep assist, and emergency stop assist, which can help pull the car onto the shoulder if the driver is incapacitated.
The main caveat is that advanced safety features are not standard, so you should verify whether a used example has the driver-assistance package you want. The headlight result also makes it worth checking whether the car has the optional lights rather than the standard ones.
Should I buy a 2021 BMW 5 Series or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2021 if:
- 29.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 77.1% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.92% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2021 refresh adds a 48-volt mild-hybrid system, a bigger infotainment touchscreen, and subtle styling updates.
The bottom line: If you want the most up-to-date version of this generation, the 2021 is the smart pick because it brings the refresh updates without losing the 5 Series’ comfort, tech, and balanced driving character. If you’re more price-sensitive, a nearby year can still make sense, but the 2021’s updated equipment and softened pricing make it the cleaner target for shoppers who want a newer-feeling used luxury sedan.
