CarGurus Analysis: 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan
overall

Summary
With 2,497 currently listed for sale and an average price of $15,992.00, 33.2% of 2020 Volkswagen Tiguans for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan 4.89 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.67 / 10.
72.9% of 2020 Tiguan models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan stands out in the compact crossover class because it offers three rows of seating, making it a rare choice for buyers who want this size of SUV but need extra passenger capacity. Volkswagen also made it much larger than average for its competitive set to fit those surprisingly spacious seats, and that added room is one of its defining strengths. It is also described as the German brand’s best-selling vehicle in the U.S., which underscores how broadly it appeals.
Beyond its packaging, the Tiguan’s appeal comes from its spacious cabin and easy-to-use technology. Those traits make it a practical option for shoppers who value comfort and straightforward operation over flash. The tradeoff is that handling is a weak point, so it is not the most engaging choice to drive. Some owners also wish it had a power liftgate, suggesting that convenience features are not as complete as the Tiguan’s space and value story might suggest.

This car is great. I think it was a good value because I also looked at a RAV4 and the RAV4 was more expensive, even though it had the exact same features and the Tiguan even was a bit roomier. The only thing the car is missing is a power lift gate.

I do think this car is a great value. I would compare it to the Audi Q5. I traded an Audi Q3 for it. There is way more space and features. I absolutely love it!

See more price trendsHow much does the 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $15,992 |
| Year-Round Low | $15,811.51 |
| Year-Round High | $18,272.50 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $18,272 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −12.48% |
Prices have softened 12.48% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 2,503 listings available, which suggests solid inventory for comparison shopping.
If you find a listing below $15,811.51, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan a good car?
Yes — the 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan earns a 4.89/5 user rating and a 7.67/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Form and function and Technology.
Owners consistently praise its roomy interior, value, and quality, and many also like its smooth handling and easy-to-use tech. The Tiguan’s added space and third-row seating make it especially appealing if you want more passenger room than many compact crossovers provide.
The trade-offs are that it is not the most agile choice in its class and some buyers may miss the power liftgate. That makes it a better fit if you prioritize comfort, practicality, and cabin space over sporty driving dynamics.
With 33.3% of listings marked as good or great deals, there is still room to shop selectively.
Is the 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan reliable?
Owners rate it 4.89/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a vehicle that feels reliable, dependable, and easy to count on for everyday use, especially when you value space and comfort. The expert evaluation also emphasizes the Tiguan’s solid build quality and its quiet, composed highway manners, which support the impression of a well-sorted family SUV.
Volkswagen also includes five years of complimentary Car-Net features, which adds useful ownership convenience. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is making sure the vehicle has been maintained well, since higher-mileage examples may show the effects of heavier family use.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan?
At 72.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then focus your inspection on bodywork, alignment, and signs of prior repair. Because this model is often chosen for family duty, it is also worth checking interior wear, infotainment operation, and whether convenience features still work properly.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base S trim leaves out some of the nicer touches found higher up, including the 8-inch touchscreen, leatherette upholstery, heated front seats, automatic climate control, and other upscale equipment.
- Powertrain: Every Tiguan uses a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 184 horsepower and 221 pound-feet of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic. It feels responsive around town, but highway passing can still take patience.
- Safety package: All models include forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, blind spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. Adaptive cruise control with lane-keeping assistance and LED headlights with automatic high beams are reserved for the top SEL trim.
- Infotainment: Base models use a 6.5-inch touchscreen, while SE and higher trims get an 8-inch capacitive display. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, and a WiFi hotspot are standard, and Digital Cockpit is available on top SEL trims.
- Fuel efficiency: A front-drive Tiguan earns 25 miles per gallon combined, while the AWD version is rated at 23 mpg combined. Highway numbers do not crack 30 mpg for either version.
Which 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan trim should I buy?
The 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan is offered in 5 trim levels: S, SE, SE R-Line Black, SEL, SEL Premium R-Line.
Here's the short version:
- Base trim: The S is the least expensive entry point, but it misses some of the features that make the Tiguan feel more complete, including the larger touchscreen and several comfort upgrades.
- Sweet-spot trim: The SE is the value leader because it adds leatherette upholstery, heated front seats, automatic climate control, and the 8-inch infotainment touchscreen for a relatively modest price increase.
- Premium/top trim: The SEL adds adaptive cruise control with lane-keeping assist and more luxury equipment, while the SEL Premium R-Line sits at the top with AWD and the most upscale presentation.
- Off-road trim: None of the trims is really aimed at off-road use, so daily drivers should focus on value and equipment rather than rugged intent.
The SEL trim is the one to watch if you want the most complete safety package, since adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assist are not standard on lower trims.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan?
The market looks moderate and selective buyers should still have room to negotiate.
- Deal availability: 33.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 2,503 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 12.48% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 72.8% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $15,811.51, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan's resale value?
The current average of $15,992 sits slightly below last year's $18,272.
That price drop suggests the Tiguan has already absorbed a meaningful amount of depreciation, which can help future sellers if they buy at the right price today. If you shop carefully now, you may have less downside left than you would with a newer, pricier SUV. Strong demand for space, comfort, and family-friendly packaging should continue to support interest in well-kept examples.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.89/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan safe?
It earns a Top Safety Pick rating from IIHS, but only on top-of-the-line SEL Premium models with LED headlights.
It earns a 6/10 safety score from our experts.
Volkswagen’s standard safety package includes forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, blind spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert on all models. That is a strong baseline, but adaptive cruise control with lane-keeping assistance and LED headlights with automatic high beams are reserved for the top SEL trim.
One important caveat is that most Tiguans are equipped with halogen headlights, which IIHS rates poor. That means safety performance can vary depending on trim and equipment, so you should verify the exact lighting and driver-assistance setup on any used example you consider.
Should I buy a 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 33.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 72.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 12.48% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.89/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It offers third-row seating in a compact crossover, which is rare for the class.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $17,639, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $15,992 average.
- It adds Volkswagen's IQ Drive system.
The bottom line: If you want the best mix of price, space, and value, the 2020 is the smarter buy. If you are willing to spend more for a newer model year and a more advanced safety package, the 2021 is the better path. For price-sensitive buyers, the 2020 gives you the stronger deal today.
