CarGurus Analysis: 2020 Toyota Prius Prime
overall

Summary
With 221 currently listed for sale and an average price of $23,139.00, 30.3% of 2020 Toyota Prius Primes for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2020 Toyota Prius Prime 4 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.83 / 10.
68.3% of 2020 Prius Prime models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2020 Toyota Prius Prime stands out as a plug-in hybrid built around maximum efficiency and value. The test-drive summary calls it the most efficient plug-in hybrid on sale, and it also frames the car as a strong choice for buyers who want to save the most money on gas. That same source also emphasizes Toyota’s long experience with hybrid technology, which helps explain why the Prius Prime is presented as such a confident, economy-first pick.
Its strengths are straightforward: it is fuel-efficient and offers excellent value for money. Those qualities make it appealing to shoppers who care more about minimizing fuel costs than chasing performance. The tradeoff is that the Prius Prime is described as sluggish and as having outdated technology, so its appeal is strongest for buyers who prioritize efficiency and practicality over speed or a cutting-edge cabin.

Surprising... both good and bad. Starting off this car has a ton of features like a heads up display, JBL sound, and a giant touch screen. On the surface all this is pretty cool, but in practice the infotainment system is really awkward and difficult to use. It makes poor use of the space. Generally this Prius has less storage space than our Previous generation of Prius. The good surprises came from unexpected places. The speed and acceleration were much improved. It feels quick and it has a much more quiet ride. They did a good job on insulation . Overall it feels like a good car but quirky.

The expert review reinforces that dependability angle by describing Toyota’s hybrid system as proven and near-perfect, and by emphasizing the brand’s long experience with hybrid technology. It also notes ToyotaCare, which includes 2 years/25,000 miles of maintenance and 2 years/unlimited miles of roadside assistance.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about the powertrain and more about living with dated tech and checking that the car has been maintained properly.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Toyota Prius Prime?
At 70.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has any accident history. Focus on body condition, panel alignment, and signs of repair quality, then make sure the hybrid system, charging behavior, and cabin electronics all work as expected.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base LE misses the larger 11.6-inch touchscreen, while the XLE and Limited add more of the convenience and tech that make the car easier to live with. The midgrade XLE is the best-value choice because it adds the larger touchscreen, navigation, wireless charging, heated front seats, and keyless entry.
- Powertrain: The plug-in hybrid setup is built around efficiency, with 133 MPGe in electric mode, about 25 miles of all-electric range, and 55 mpg city / 53 highway / 54 combined once the battery is depleted. It is not quick, but it is tuned for quiet, seamless operation and strong fuel savings.
- Safety package: Forward emergency braking, pedestrian detection, lane-keep assist, and automatic high beams are standard. Blind-spot monitoring is included only on the Limited.
- Infotainment: The touchscreen measures 11.6 inches on the XLE and Limited, but it is unavailable on the base LE. It supports Apple CarPlay, but the system is dated and slow.
- Fuel efficiency: The car returns 55 mpg city, 53 highway, and 54 combined after the battery is depleted, and it is rated at 133 MPGe in electric mode.
Which 2020 Toyota Prius Prime trim should I buy?
The 2020 Toyota Prius Prime is offered in 3 trim levels: LE, XLE, Limited.
Here's the short version:
- LE: This is the entry point, but it leaves out the larger touchscreen that makes the cabin easier to use. It makes sense only if you want the lowest starting price and can live with the most basic setup.
- XLE: This is the best-value trim. It adds the larger touchscreen, navigation, wireless charging, heated front seats, and keyless entry, which makes it the sweet spot for most used buyers.
- Limited: This is the most fully equipped version, and it is the one to choose if you want the most convenience and the added safety benefit of blind-spot monitoring.
Forward emergency braking, pedestrian detection, lane-keep assist, and automatic high beams are standard across the lineup, while blind-spot monitoring is limited to the Limited.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Toyota Prius Prime?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently but still move quickly on a strong listing.
- Deal availability: 32.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 244 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices are up 6.15% year-over-year.
- Clean inventory: 70.5% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $20,511.22, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Toyota Prius Prime's resale value?
The current average of $23,369 sits slightly above last year's $22,015.
That upward move suggests the market has been willing to pay more for this model year, which is a positive sign if you plan to sell later. The Prius Prime’s efficiency-focused reputation and strong value proposition help support demand, especially among shoppers who care most about fuel savings.
Because the price trend is still positive, a well-kept example should remain relatively easy to market if you maintain it carefully. Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2020 Toyota Prius Prime safe?
It earns a five-star overall rating from NHTSA and a 2019 Top Safety Pick rating from IIHS. In NHTSA testing, the Prius received four-star ratings for both driver and passenger in a head-on frontal crash, and two-star ratings for the pole test.
It earns a 8/10 safety score from our experts.
Forward emergency braking, pedestrian detection, lane-keep assist, and automatic high beams are standard. Blind-spot monitoring is included only on the Limited.
The main caveat is that the Prius Prime itself was not crash-tested by either agency, so those ratings come from the closely related Prius. That makes history and trim verification especially useful when you shop used examples.
Should I buy a 2020 Toyota Prius Prime or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 32.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 70.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices are up 6.15% year-over-year.
- Owners rate it 4/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- The 2020 model adds a center rear seat and an all-black interior, improving practicality over the prior year.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $22,794, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $23,369 average.
- It adds a good list of standard equipment and features while keeping strong efficiency.
The bottom line: If you want the strongest mix of value, efficiency, and proven hybrid appeal, the 2020 is the safer pick. If your priority is spending less up front and you can accept similar strengths with a newer model year, the 2021 is the better price-sensitive alternative.
