CarGurus Analysis: 2020 Toyota Prius
overall

Summary
With 273 currently listed for sale and an average price of $21,545.00, 31.9% of 2020 Toyota Priuses for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2020 Toyota Prius 4.8 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.5 / 10.
64.1% of 2020 Prius models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2020 Toyota Prius stands out as a dedicated hybrid that has long served as a benchmark in its segment. It is described as a leader among hybrids thanks to its versatility and technology, and its fuel-efficiency focus is presented as a core part of its appeal without giving up style, drivability, or versatility. That combination helps explain why it remains such a recognizable name in hybrids.
For buyers, the Prius’s biggest strengths are straightforward: it is fuel-efficient and comes with standard advanced safety features. The available all-wheel-drive variant adds another layer of appeal for shoppers who want hybrid efficiency with extra traction. Owners also tend to praise its gas mileage, practicality, cargo space, handling, and value for money.
The main drawback noted is its potentially polarizing design, which may not appeal to everyone. Some owners also miss luxury touches such as GPS and leather seats, and complaints about the absence of a spare tire and an annoying backup beep suggest that the Prius prioritizes efficiency and practicality over premium extras.

It has great gas mileage, good handling, good looks. The sunroof was a necessary feature so I only looked at models with a sunroof. I really like that the car holds its value. I do not like that it has no spare tire.

This is our 5th Prius, and we would drive no other car. The 2020 we bought has so many good safety features. After 1 week, we have 60 MPH average.

LE trim is just right. A little shocking at first with missing luxuries (I traded my Tesla). But as a pragmatic car that is enjoyable to drive, has great cargo space- it makes sense and is fun. I get 58mph so far without trying. Not infinite like my electric was, but I don’t have to charge 45 min every two weeks. Gas once a month works great. The backup beep is really annoying, but carista works and you can turn it off.

How much does the 2020 Toyota Prius cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $21,548 |
| Year-Round Low | $19,070.55 |
| Year-Round High | $21,567.80 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $20,710 |
| Change vs. Last Year | +4.05% |
Prices are up 4.05% year-over-year — a sign of continued demand for this model year.
There are 297 listings available, which gives you a modest amount of inventory to compare before you buy. If you find a listing below $19,070.55, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2020 Toyota Prius a good car?
Yes — the 2020 Toyota Prius earns a 4.8/5 user rating and a 7.5/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Cost effectiveness and Safety.
Owners consistently praise its gas mileage, practicality, cargo space, handling, and value for money. The Prius also stands out for its fuel-efficiency focus and standard advanced safety features, which fit well if you want a low-stress commuter or a practical hybrid for everyday use.
The main trade-offs are its potentially polarizing design and the lack of some luxury touches, including GPS and leather seats. The market still shows 28.6% good or great deals, which suggests there are worthwhile opportunities if you shop carefully.
Is the 2020 Toyota Prius reliable?
Owners rate it 4.8/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Owners describe it as dependable in everyday use, with strong praise for its practicality, gas mileage, and value. The expert review also emphasizes the Prius’s smooth, confident power delivery and its ability to handle commuting without issue.
The hybrid system is backed by long warranty coverage, including the battery, which helps reduce long-term ownership risk for used buyers.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Toyota Prius?
At 64.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a close inspection of body panels, paint consistency, tires, brakes, and interior wear. Because some listings have accident history, condition matters more than mileage alone. It also helps to confirm that the hybrid system, driver-assistance features, and infotainment functions all work as expected.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The L Eco comes with 15-inch alloy wheels with wheel covers, cloth upholstery, a 7-inch touchscreen, and standard driver-assistance features, while the LE adds a rear windshield wiper, parking sensors, seat-back pockets, and a cargo-area tonneau cover. The XLE adds 17-inch alloy wheels, rain-sensing wipers, synthetic leather upholstery, a power driver’s seat, heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, and wireless device charging. The Limited adds adaptive, self-leveling headlights, a head-up display, satellite radio, HD Radio, and an 11.6-inch touchscreen, but that larger screen loses Android Auto support.
- Powertrain: Every trim uses a 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine paired with an electric motor and battery for 121 horsepower and 105 pound-feet of torque. Front-wheel drive is standard, and an all-wheel-drive variant adds a second electric motor for the rear wheels that operates at speeds up to 43 mph.
- Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard and includes automatic emergency braking, forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning, adaptive cruise control, and automatic high beams. Blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, front-and-rear parking sensors, active park assist, and lane-tracing assist are available, with some of those features added as you move up the lineup.
- Infotainment: The standard setup is a 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Amazon Alexa compatibility, Bluetooth, three USB ports, and a WiFi hotspot. The Limited upgrades to an 11.6-inch screen with a portrait layout and split-screen capability, but it lacks Android Auto.
- Fuel efficiency: The Eco trim returns 58 mpg city, 53 highway, 56 combined. The standard Prius returns 54 mpg city, 50 highway, 52 combined, and the all-wheel-drive version returns 52 mpg city, 48 highway, 50 combined.
Which 2020 Toyota Prius trim should I buy?
The 2020 Toyota Prius is offered in 4 trim levels: L Eco, LE, XLE, and Limited.
Here's the short version:
- L Eco: This is the value-focused starting point if you want the lowest entry price and the best fuel economy, plus the standard 7-inch touchscreen and core safety tech.
- LE: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds useful everyday upgrades like parking sensors, a rear windshield wiper, and cargo-area convenience features without jumping too far in price.
- XLE: Choose this if you want a more comfortable and upscale-feeling Prius, thanks to heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, synthetic leather upholstery, and wireless charging.
- Limited: Pick this if you want the most features, including the larger 11.6-inch screen, head-up display, and premium audio, but note that the bigger infotainment system loses Android Auto support.
Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard across the lineup, and the available lane-tracing assist is a helpful extra if you want more driver support.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Toyota Prius?
Act selectively, because this is still a seller-leaning market and the best listings can move quickly.
- Deal availability: 28.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 297 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices are up 4.05% year-over-year.
- Clean inventory: 64.6% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $19,070.55, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Toyota Prius's resale value?
The current average of $21,548 sits slightly above last year's $20,710.
That upward move suggests the Prius continues to hold buyer interest well, which can help support resale value if you keep the car in good condition. Strong efficiency, practicality, and safety appeal tend to keep demand steady in the used market. If you buy carefully and maintain the hybrid system well, you should be in a solid position when it is time to sell.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.8/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2020 Toyota Prius safe?
The Prius earned a five-star rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). It also earned a Top Safety Pick accolade from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), though it fell short of Top Safety Pick+ because of average results in the passenger-side small overlap front crash test and headlight testing.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard and includes automatic emergency braking, forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning, adaptive cruise control, and automatic high beams. Available upgrades include blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, front-and-rear parking sensors, active park assist, and lane-tracing assist.
The main safety caveat is that the Prius did not reach the IIHS’s highest award level, so you should pay attention to headlight performance and crash-history details when shopping used.
Should I buy a 2020 Toyota Prius or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 28.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 64.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices are up 4.05% year-over-year.
- Owners rate it 4.8/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2020 model keeps the Prius’s hybrid efficiency focus, standard safety tech, and available all-wheel drive.
Consider the 2019 if:
- At $19,785, the 2019 costs less than the current year's $21,548 average.
- It adds a new electric AWD option and broadens the Prius’s appeal.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $21,601, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $21,548 average.
- It makes Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 standard across the board and adds Android Auto standard on most trims.
The bottom line: If you want the strongest mix of price, efficiency, and safety tech, the 2020 is the main target. If you are more price-sensitive, the 2019 can save you money, while the 2021 is worth considering if you want the later-year updates and can stretch your budget.
