CarGurus Analysis: 2020 Toyota 4Runner
overall

Summary
With 160 currently listed for sale near Pittsburgh, PA and an average price of $34,799.00, 16.9% of 2020 Toyota 4Runners for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2020 Toyota 4Runner 4.85 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 6.83 / 10.
71.9% of 2020 4Runner models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2020 Toyota 4Runner stands out as a vehicle built around a clear purpose rather than broad compromise. It feels most at home when the road gets rough, whether that means a dusty cow path or a snowy mountain road, and it is especially appealing to buyers who want a rugged SUV that can handle terrain outside the typical car’s comfort zone. Even in Limited trim, it still leans into that mission, with enough chrome and leather to present itself as a rough-and-tumble luxury alternative.
That focus comes with tradeoffs. The 2020 Toyota 4Runner’s strengths include standard advanced safety features, a powerful engine, and off-road capability, but it is also described as poor value for money, with poor fuel economy and interior materials that feel cheap. For shoppers who truly need four-wheel drive and prioritize durability and capability over refinement, those compromises may be easier to accept.

Love the color and the ability to do anything in this bad boy. Drives off road super smooth and easy, drives on paced road as smooth as the SR5. This is the perfect vehicle.

The perfect dinosaur for me! I chose this make and model specifically for its older tech and build quality. Is it fast, no. Does it sip gas, nope. Does it feel solid, yes. This is my second one. The first is still running great at 20 years old. My only gripe is the type of OEM step bars. Easy to get in, but not the best for getting out of the vehicle. They will be swapped. Problem solved. This is a popular platform but it isn't the right vehicle for everyone. If you are considering a 4Runner, watch the Care Care Nut's review of the 5th gen 4Runners FIRST. Know what you are buying. I have had a Lexus and 2 different 4 Runners. These are the best vehicles I have ever owned and that’s comparing them to Volvo, Dodge, Jeep, and BMW. The only thing I have a problem with is gas mileage but that’s what you get when you have 4 wheel drive. It would be nice if it had the push button lift for the tail gate but no big deal. They are awesome vehicles. I am on my 4th Toyota/Lexus brand.

This 2020 4 Runner is a great choice. I have a very active lifestyle. I surf, snowboard, cycle and take my two dogs almost everywhere I go. So this vehicle is perfect for what I need. The SR5 Premium model has just enough nice features that it feels like your driving a luxury car minus the high price tag. If you are looking for a true goat of a truck I recommend this vehicle.

How much does the 2020 Toyota 4Runner cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $35,687 |
| Year-Round Low | $33,529.59 |
| Year-Round High | $36,680.48 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $36,678 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −2.70% |
Prices have softened 2.70% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 2,399 listings available, which suggests you have a workable amount of inventory to compare.
If you find a listing below $33,529.59, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2020 Toyota 4Runner a good car?
Yes — with a 4.85/5 user rating and a 6.83/10 expert rating, you’re looking at a model that clearly resonates with owners and still earns solid marks from our testers. The model scores 8/10 across Performance and Form and function.
Owners consistently praise its ruggedness, reliability, value retention, comfort, and off-road capability. The trade-offs are familiar: you give up some modern features, and the interior design and materials can feel dated compared with newer rivals.
That fits the 4Runner’s mission well: it’s built for buyers who want durability, a high seating position, and real trail ability more than a polished commuter SUV. With 33.6% of listings marked as good or great deals, the market still offers some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2020 Toyota 4Runner reliable?
Owners rate it 4.85/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction. Reviews also point to ruggedness, reliability, trouble-free ownership, and value retention, which are exactly the kinds of traits you want if you plan to keep your SUV for years.
The expert drive notes reinforce that impression by describing the engine’s longevity as a testament to its reliability. Toyota’s maintenance-friendly reputation is also helped by the model’s straightforward mechanical setup.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about basic durability and more about living with an older design that can feel behind the curve on refinement and efficiency.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Toyota 4Runner?
At 69.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the SUV has been used off-road or in harsh weather. Focus on signs of frame, suspension, tire, and underbody wear, since those are the areas most likely to reflect hard use. It also helps to compare trim equipment carefully so you know whether the truck has the features you expect.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The lineup includes SR5, SR5 Premium, TRD Off-Road, TRD Off-Road Premium, TRD Pro, Limited, Nightshade Special Edition, and Venture Special Edition. Lower trims come with cloth seats, while SR5 Premium and TRD Off-Road Premium add SofTex material; the Limited leans more toward comfort with leather upholstery. All trims get an 8-inch touchscreen, but the Limited and TRD Pro stand out with different grille treatments and a more upscale look.
- Powertrain: Every version uses a 4.0-liter V6 with a 5-speed automatic transmission, making 270 horsepower and 278 pound-feet of torque. It’s tuned more for durability and off-road use than smooth efficiency, and EPA estimates come in at 16 mpg city, 19 mpg highway, and 17 mpg combined.
- Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense P includes adaptive cruise control, lane-departure alert, a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, and automatic high beams. The system is standard, and the model also comes with eight airbags.
- Infotainment: You get an 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The system also supports Amazon Alexa, Bluetooth, and subscription services, while higher trims add features like JBL audio and navigation.
- Fuel efficiency: EPA estimates are 16 mpg city, 19 mpg highway, and 17 mpg combined. The powertrain content also notes that fuel economy does not improve meaningfully with 2WD.
Which 2020 Toyota 4Runner trim should I buy?
The 2020 Toyota 4Runner is offered in 8 trim levels: SR5, SR5 Premium, TRD Off-Road, TRD Off-Road Premium, TRD Pro, Limited, Nightshade Special Edition, and Venture Special Edition.
Here's the short version:
- Base trim: SR5 gives you the core 4Runner experience, but it’s the least upscale choice. You miss out on the more comfort-focused materials found higher up the range, and the cabin still feels fairly utilitarian.
- Sweet-spot trim: SR5 Premium is the best value if you want a more polished daily driver without jumping to the pricier specialty trims. It adds a more upscale interior feel while keeping the 4Runner’s core capability intact.
- Premium/top trim: Limited is the most comfort-oriented choice, with leather upholstery and a more upscale presentation. It’s the trim to choose if you care more about road comfort and features than trail hardware.
- Off-road trim: TRD Pro is the most extreme choice, but it comes with a steep price premium that makes it harder to justify for typical daily driving.
Toyota Safety Sense P is standard, so you don’t need to move up the range just to get the core driver-assistance suite.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Toyota 4Runner?
The market looks moderate for selective buyers, with enough inventory to shop carefully and enough deal activity to reward patience.
- Deal availability: 33.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 2,399 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.70% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 69.7% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $33,529.59, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Toyota 4Runner's resale value?
The current average of $35,687 sits slightly below last year's $36,678.
That kind of softening can help you as a buyer today, but it also suggests the market has already adjusted somewhat from prior highs. If you buy well, you may have a better chance of limiting depreciation compared with paying above the current average.
The 4Runner’s reputation for durability and strong demand helps support long-term value, especially among shoppers who specifically want a rugged SUV. Limited supply of well-kept examples can also help resale performance when you eventually sell.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.85/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2020 Toyota 4Runner safe?
The 2020 Toyota 4Runner earns four-star ratings overall from NHTSA and three-star ratings in rollover testing, while IIHS gave it Good scores in all crash tests except the small overlap front driver-side test, where it scored Marginal.
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
Toyota Safety Sense P is standard and includes adaptive cruise control, lane-departure alert, a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, and automatic high beams. The SUV also comes with eight standard airbags.
The main caveat is the Marginal IIHS result and the relatively high center of gravity, which make the 4Runner less reassuring than some rivals in everyday driving.
Should I buy a 2020 Toyota 4Runner or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 33.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 69.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.70% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.85/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- Toyota adds Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Toyota Safety Sense P for this year.
Consider the 2019 if:
- At $32,135, the 2019 costs less than the current year's $35,687 average.
- It emphasizes off-road capability and reliability in a simpler package.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $37,314, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $35,687 average.
- It leans on reliability, resale value, and rugged utility.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, modern safety tech, and the classic 4Runner formula, the 2020 is the primary year to target. If you’re especially price-sensitive, the 2019 can save you money, while the 2021 makes sense if you’re willing to pay more for a newer model-year alternative.
