CarGurus Analysis: 2020 Subaru WRX
overall

Summary
With 600 currently listed for sale and an average price of $21,725.00, 28.8% of 2020 Subaru WRXs for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2020 Subaru WRX 5 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8.33 / 10.
61.3% of 2020 WRX models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2020 Subaru WRX stands out as a performance sedan that still feels practical enough for everyday use. Its appeal starts with the way it blends sensible tech and safety features into an ideal daily driver performance car, while its roots in Subaru’s motorsports efforts give it a more serious enthusiast identity than many compact sedans can claim. The WRX is presented as the road-going manifestation of decades in world rally racing, which helps explain why it feels like a distilled version of Subaru’s chassis and powertrain know-how rather than just a sporty trim.
What makes the 2020 WRX especially attractive is the combination of fun-to-drive character, a manual transmission option, and standard all-wheel drive. That mix gives it a broad appeal for buyers who want year-round traction without giving up engagement behind the wheel. At the same time, it is not without drawbacks: the available information points to outdated technology, and owner feedback also suggests some concerns about interior quality and tire noise at higher speeds. Even so, for shoppers who value performance and daily usability in the same package, the 2020 Subaru WRX has a distinctive formula.

Ive only had it a couple days but man the cvt is great! The handling is beautiful, you feel stuck on the rode and even during a massive downpour you feel very much in control.

Pretty cool ride for a car that holds its valuable so well. You can really feel the turbo pull when you pass 2-3k rpm. Car has enough power for fun, but can still be smooth enough for a DD. Clutch was relatively light. The interior is pretty cheap (plasticy and terrible sound system), but this is a car to drive for when you want a little bit of umph. Wish they still had a hatchback version - Id have no second thoughts of my next car if that were the case.

Perfect enthusiast family daily driver. If it had a hatch it’d be 100%. I drive for DoorDash and it makes work something I look forward to. Ride comfort is perfect. I even get 30 mpg on highway easy. Only complaint is tire noise above 50 mph. But the sound system bumps hard enough to cover it up. For me this car checks all boxes, I wanted to get the last version of an older model before they dump even more unnecessary technology into it. My last car was the FR-S and while that car was super fun, this one offers similar thrills, more torque, and a lot more utility. Wish the levorg was available state side. Hatch would make it the best car ever.

Loved driving it. It would be nice if the linkage was a little tighter. It is very comfortable and visually appealing.

Yes — the 2020 Subaru WRX earns a 5/5 user rating and an 8.33/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Performance, Cost effectiveness, Technology, and Safety.
Owners consistently praise the turbo power, handling, and comfort, especially for daily driving. The WRX also stands out for its fun-to-drive character and standard all-wheel drive, which make it appealing if you want year-round traction without giving up engagement behind the wheel. The practical sedan layout helps it work as an everyday car, even though it still leans hard into enthusiast appeal.
The main trade-offs are the outdated technology and the firmer, noisier driving experience that comes with the car’s performance focus. That matters most if you want a quieter, more polished commuter. Even so, the WRX’s strong market presence, with 30.9% of listings marked as good or great deals, suggests there are still worthwhile opportunities if you shop carefully.
Is the 2020 Subaru WRX reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a car that people feel good about living with over time, especially because it delivers the kind of performance and daily-driver usability they want without feeling fragile or overly complicated. The expert evaluation also emphasizes the WRX’s durable, driver-focused character and its ability to handle spirited use while still working as a commuter. The manual transmission is described as smooth and forgiving, which supports the sense that the car is built to be used regularly, not just admired.
If you buy used, the biggest long-term ownership risk is less about the core mechanical formula and more about how hard the car was driven and maintained before you got it.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Subaru WRX?
At 61.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially on cars that look modified or unusually worn. Focus on condition details that can reveal hard use, including tire wear, brake wear, suspension feel, and signs of neglect in the cabin or exterior. Because this model is often bought for performance, the way a car was driven matters just as much as the mileage.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The Base trim includes 17-inch alloy wheels, automatic climate control, power front-and-rear windows, Bluetooth, satellite radio, two USB ports, and a 6.5-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The Premium adds 18-inch wheels, halogen fog lights, steering-responsive auto-on/off headlights, heated front seats, a power moonroof, and a larger 7-inch touchscreen. The Limited adds leather upholstery, push-button start, and a 10-way power-adjustable driver’s seat.
- Powertrain: You get a turbocharged and intercooled 2.0-liter boxer-four with 268 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, standard symmetrical all-wheel drive, and a six-speed manual transmission; a CVT is also available.
- Safety package: EyeSight includes forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, automatic high beams, and adaptive cruise control. It is optional on the WRX, while blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and reverse automatic emergency braking are also available.
- Infotainment: The standard screen is 6.5 inches, with a 7-inch screen available. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are included, and the system is described as easy to use.
- Fuel efficiency: The manual returns 21 mpg city, 27 highway, 23 combined. The CVT returns 18 mpg city, 24 highway, 21 combined.
Which 2020 Subaru WRX trim should I buy?
The 2020 Subaru WRX is offered in 3 trim levels: Base, Premium, and Limited.
Here's the short version:
- Base: This is the value play if you want the WRX formula at the lowest entry point. You still get the core appeal: turbo power, standard all-wheel drive, a manual transmission, and a 6.5-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. If you care most about the driving experience and least about extra comfort features, this is the trim to start with.
- Premium: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds the features that make the WRX easier to live with every day. Heated front seats, a power moonroof, a larger 7-inch touchscreen, and upgraded lighting make it feel more complete without moving too far up the price ladder.
- Limited: Choose this if you want the most comfort-oriented version of the standard WRX. Leather upholstery, push-button start, and a 10-way power-adjustable driver’s seat give it a more upscale feel, but you are paying for refinement rather than a major change in the car’s core personality.
EyeSight is optional on the WRX, so make sure you verify whether a used example has that safety suite equipped.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Subaru WRX?
The market looks moderately favorable if you are selective and willing to compare listings carefully.
- Deal availability: 30.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 621 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.24% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 61.7% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $20,976.01, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Subaru WRX's resale value?
The current average of $21,599 sits slightly below last year's $22,322.
That softer pricing suggests the WRX is in a buyer-friendly phase right now, which can help you if you are shopping used but may limit upside if you are thinking about near-term resale. For a future seller, the key takeaway is that the market is still rewarding the WRX’s enthusiast appeal, but not enough to offset broader price softening. Well-kept examples should still attract attention because the car’s performance identity remains a major draw.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2020 Subaru WRX safe?
The Subaru WRX earns a Top Safety Pick rating from IIHS and a five-star overall safety rating from NHTSA.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
The WRX comes with a full array of front- and side-impact airbags, traction control, and a tire-pressure monitoring system. EyeSight is available and includes forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, automatic high beams, and adaptive cruise control. Blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and reverse automatic emergency braking are also available. One important caveat is that EyeSight is optional rather than standard on the WRX, so you should confirm whether a used example has it equipped.
Should I buy a 2020 Subaru WRX or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 30.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 61.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.24% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It blends standard all-wheel drive, manual-transmission engagement, and everyday practicality into a focused performance sedan.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $23,068, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $21,599 average.
- It sharpens the WRX’s everyday usability around its engaging driving character.
The bottom line: If you want the better value today, the 2020 is the stronger buy because pricing has eased and inventory is healthy. If you are willing to pay more for the next model year, the 2021 is the path to consider, but the 2020 already delivers the core WRX experience with a more attractive market price.
