Used 2020 Subaru Outback for Sale near New Jersey

How much does the 2020 Subaru Outback cost?

Prices have softened 6.63% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 2,808 listings available, which suggests a healthy amount of inventory to compare.

Is the 2020 Subaru Outback a good car?

Yes — the 2020 Subaru Outback earns a 5/5 user rating and a 7.7/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Cost effectiveness at 9/10. Owners consistently praise its comfort, ample interior space, and safety features, and the overview frames it as a practical choice for everyday usefulness with a distinctive shape. The main trade-offs are the sluggish touchscreen response and the underwhelming base engine. Even so, it remains a strong fit if you want standard all-wheel drive, value for money, and a comfortable, safety-focused driving experience. Good and great deals account for 38.7% of listings, which gives you some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2020 Subaru Outback reliable?

Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction. User feedback points to a reliable, trouble-free feel, with owners highlighting comfort, safety, and confidence for long-term use. The expert review also emphasizes Subaru’s all-time symmetrical all-wheel drive and notes that the system’s always-on design helps avoid the delay you can get when traction systems have to react after slip begins. The cost-effectiveness review also points to a broad pricing spread that makes ownership approachable. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that the tech and driver-monitoring features may be more frustrating than the mechanical package itself.

What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Subaru Outback?

Accident-free inventory is solid at 76.5% — always verify the vehicle history report.

You should still run a vehicle history report on any candidate and prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re shopping outside the cleanest listings. Focus on overall condition, because the Outback’s appeal depends heavily on how well the cabin tech, safety systems, and drivetrain have been maintained. If you’re comparing multiple examples, pay close attention to how the touchscreen and driver-assist features behave in real use.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base 2.5i is fairly spartan, with dual 7-inch screens instead of the larger display, while Premium adds the 11.6-inch touchscreen, dual-zone climate control, heated front seats, and a power-adjustable driver’s seat. Limited adds leather upholstery, an upgraded stereo, reverse auto braking, and standard blind-spot monitoring and a power liftgate, while Touring adds upgraded leather, ventilated front seats, and a sunroof.
• Powertrain: The standard 2.5-liter engine makes 182 horsepower and is paired with a CVT, while XT trims use a 2.4-liter turbocharged engine with 260 hp and 277 pound-feet of torque. The standard engine is efficient enough for daily use, and the turbo is the better pick if you want stronger passing or towing confidence.
• Safety package: EyeSight is standard and includes adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and lane-keep alert and assist. DriverFocus is also available, using an infrared monitor and facial recognition, but it is not standard on every trim.
• Infotainment: The Outback uses an 11.6-inch touchscreen on most trims, while the base trim gets dual 7-inch screens. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are included, but the system is known for lag, and the camera resolution trails the screen size.
• Fuel efficiency: The base engine returns 26 mpg city and 33 mpg highway.

Which 2020 Subaru Outback trim should I buy?

The 2020 Subaru Outback is offered in 7 trim levels: 2.5i, Premium, Limited, Touring, Touring, Onyx Edition XT, Limited XT, and Touring XT.

Here's the short version:

• 2.5i: This is the entry point, and it gives you standard all-wheel drive, LED headlights, keyless entry, automatic climate control, and basic smartphone integration. It makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the Outback, but it is the most stripped-down version.
• Premium: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds the 11.6-inch touchscreen, dual-zone climate control, heated front seats, and a power-adjustable driver’s seat. If you want the Outback’s modern cabin experience without jumping too far up the price ladder, this is the trim to target.
• Limited: This trim adds leather upholstery, an upgraded Harman Kardon stereo, reverse auto braking, a memory system for the driver, and standard blind-spot monitoring plus a power liftgate. It suits you if you want a more upscale daily driver and are willing to pay for convenience.
• Touring: This is the comfort-focused choice, with upgraded leather, ventilated front seats, and a sunroof. It is the right pick if you want the most relaxed, near-luxury feel in the lineup.
• Onyx Edition XT: This trim pairs the more powerful turbo engine with heated rear seats, a front-view camera, hill-descent control, and a more aggressive X-Mode setup. It is the best fit if you want the most capability and the strongest all-around personality.
• Limited XT: This combines the Limited’s upscale equipment with the turbo engine, making it a strong choice if you want more power without giving up comfort features.
• Touring XT: This is the most premium version, combining the Touring’s comfort upgrades with the turbo engine for the most fully equipped Outback experience.

The safety package is strong across the lineup, but blind-spot monitoring is not standard on the Premium trim.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Subaru Outback?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.

• Deal availability: 38.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 2,808 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 6.63% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 76.5% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $20,418, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2020 Subaru Outback's resale value?

The current average of $20,418 sits slightly below last year's $21,868.

That decline suggests the market has moved in buyers’ favor, which can make the Outback easier to purchase now but may temper near-term resale upside for a future seller. If prices stay soft, you may need to be more competitive when you eventually list yours. On the other hand, the model’s strong owner satisfaction and broad appeal should help support demand over time.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2020 Subaru Outback safe?

The 2020 Subaru Outback earns a Top Safety Pick+ rating from IIHS.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

EyeSight is standard and includes adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and lane-keep alert and assist. DriverFocus is also part of the safety story, using an infrared monitor and facial recognition to help detect distraction or drowsiness, though the review notes that it can be overly intrusive in practice. The expert review also points out that the optical EyeSight system can be interrupted by snow, mud, fog, or direct sunlight, which is worth keeping in mind if you drive in challenging conditions.

Should I buy a 2020 Subaru Outback or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2020 if:

• 38.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is solid at 76.5% — always verify the vehicle history report.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 6.63% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2020 brings a larger touchscreen, updated safety tech, and two new engines.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $21,667, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $20,418 average.
• It emphasizes reliability, low cost, and high resale with a more straightforward value proposition.

The bottom line: If you want the better bargain and the newer tech, the 2020 is the stronger buy. If you’d rather pay more for a slightly newer model with a more conservative, practicality-first pitch, the 2021 is the safer alternative for price-insensitive shoppers.
