CarGurus Analysis: 2020 Subaru Outback
overall

Summary
With 2,602 currently listed for sale and an average price of $21,096, 33.0% of 2020 Subaru Outbacks for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2020 Subaru Outback 4.95 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.67 / 10.
77.8% of 2020 Outback models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2020 Subaru Outback stands out by blending wagon-like character with crossover practicality. Subaru says it rolls into its sixth generation with a giant new tablet interface, fresh safety tech, and two new engines, while the overall shape still evokes the station-wagon era rather than a conventional SUV. That mix of familiar utility and updated hardware is a big part of its appeal, especially for buyers who want something distinctive without giving up everyday usefulness.
It also brings several strengths that make it easy to recommend on paper: standard all-wheel drive, excellent value for money, and a spacious cabin. Those qualities help explain why the Outback has long been Subaru’s top-selling model. The tradeoffs are worth noting, though. The touchscreen response is described as sluggish, and the base engine is called underwhelming, so the 2020 Outback’s appeal is strongest for shoppers who prioritize space, traction, and value over quick infotainment response or brisk acceleration.

More money yields a better, quieter, smoother ride and features. I think the Suburu Outback has many such benefits without having to spend an extraordinary amount of money for them. It has great safety features, extras such as 3 position headrests, gets good mileage, and is well equipped with convenience items. Its a good value for what it offers and has a particularly good reputation for quality and reliability.

Is the 2020 Subaru Outback a good car?
Yes — the 2020 Subaru Outback earns a 4.95/5 user rating and a 7.67/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Cost effectiveness at 9/10.
Owners consistently praise its comfort, ample interior space, and smooth ride, and they also highlight its safety features and overall sense of value. The review summary also points to impressive power and a luxurious feel, while noting that some drivers wish it had features like a heads-up display or remote start.
That lines up with the Outback’s use case as a practical, all-weather family vehicle with standard all-wheel drive, a spacious cabin, and strong everyday utility. The trade-off is that the base engine is described as underwhelming, and the touchscreen response can be sluggish.
Good and great deals account for 33.0% of listings, so there is still room to shop selectively.
Is the 2020 Subaru Outback reliable?
Owners rate it 4.95/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback also emphasizes that the Outback feels dependable, trouble-free, and well suited to long-term ownership, with many drivers calling out its comfort and safety as reasons they trust it. The expert notes reinforce that impression by describing the standard all-wheel drive system as a confidence booster and by framing the Outback as a vehicle built around reliability, low cost, and everyday usefulness.
The cost-effectiveness notes also point to a broad pricing spread that makes the Outback accessible to a wide range of buyers, which can help reduce ownership stress if you shop carefully. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that technical annoyances and maintenance costs can become more noticeable as the vehicle ages.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Subaru Outback?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 77.8% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still run a history report on any candidate, even if the listing looks clean at first glance. Prioritize a thorough inspection of the infotainment system, driver-assistance features, and overall cabin condition, since those are the areas most likely to affect your day-to-day satisfaction. It also makes sense to compare trims carefully, because some desirable features are not standard on lower versions.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base 2.5i trim gets LED headlights, keyless entry, automatic climate control, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and a standard safety suite, but it uses dual 7-inch screens instead of the larger display found higher up. If you want a more upscale feel, the Premium adds the 11.6-inch touchscreen, dual-zone climate control, heated front seats, and a power-adjustable driver’s seat.
- Powertrain: The standard 2.5-liter engine makes 182 horsepower and returns 26 mpg city and 33 mpg highway. XT trims add a 2.4-liter turbocharged engine with 260 hp and 277 pound-feet of torque, which is the better choice if you want stronger passing power or plan to tow.
- Safety package: Subaru’s EyeSight suite is standard and includes adaptive cruise control with forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and lane-keep alert and assist. Blind-spot monitoring is not standard on the Premium, so check carefully if that matters to you.
- Infotainment: The main touchscreen is 11.6 inches on most trims, while the base trim uses dual 7-inch screens. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are included, but the system is known for lag, and the camera resolution is not especially sharp.
- Fuel efficiency: The base engine returns 26 mpg city and 33 mpg highway.
Which 2020 Subaru Outback trim should I buy?
The 2020 Subaru Outback is offered in 7 trim levels: 2.5i, Premium, Limited, Touring, Touring, Onyx Edition XT, Limited XT, and Touring XT.
Here's the short version:
- 2.5i: This is the value play if you want the Outback’s core strengths at the lowest entry point. You still get standard all-wheel drive, LED headlights, keyless entry, automatic climate control, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and the standard safety suite, but the cabin tech is more basic than higher trims.
- Premium: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds the 11.6-inch touchscreen, dual-zone climate control, heated front seats, and a power-adjustable driver’s seat. It is the trim that makes the Outback feel much more modern without jumping too far in price.
- Limited: Choose this if you want a more upscale daily driver. It adds leather upholstery, an upgraded Harman Kardon stereo, reverse auto braking, a memory system for the driver, and standard blind-spot monitoring and a power liftgate.
- Touring: This is the comfort-focused choice, with upgraded leather, ventilated front seats, and a sunroof. It suits you best if you want the most relaxed, near-luxury version of the standard engine lineup.
- Onyx Edition XT: This is the most distinctive and most off-road-capable version mentioned here. It adds the turbo engine, heated rear seats, a front-view camera, hill-descent control, and a more aggressive X-Mode setup, making it the right pick if you want extra traction hardware and stronger performance.
- Limited XT: This combines the Limited’s upscale equipment with the turbo engine, so it makes sense if you want more power without giving up the nicer cabin features.
- Touring XT: This is the top-end comfort-and-power choice, pairing the Touring’s premium equipment with the turbo engine for buyers who want the most fully equipped Outback.
Blind-spot monitoring is not standard on the Premium, so check the equipment list carefully if that feature matters to you.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Subaru Outback?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you are patient.
- Deal availability: 33.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 2,631 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.43% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 77.8% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $20,704, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Subaru Outback's resale value?
The current average of $21,056 sits slightly below last year's $22,503.
That price movement suggests the market has cooled a bit, which can help you buy more confidently now but may temper short-term gains if you plan to resell soon. For a future seller, the good news is that the Outback’s broad appeal, standard all-wheel drive, and strong value reputation should help keep demand steady. The softer pricing also means your best resale outcome will likely come from a well-kept example with clean history and desirable equipment.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.95/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2020 Subaru Outback safe?
The 2020 Subaru Outback earns a 8/10 safety score from our experts.
Subaru’s EyeSight suite is standard and includes adaptive cruise control with forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and lane-keep alert and assist. The expert notes also point out that the standard all-wheel drive system adds confidence in poor weather and that the vehicle’s safety equipment is especially strong for the price.
There is one important caveat: the EyeSight system can turn off when its view is obstructed, and the DriverFocus system is described as frustrating and overly sensitive. That means you should pay close attention to how the driver-assistance tech behaves during a test drive, especially if you plan to rely on it heavily.
Should I buy a 2020 Subaru Outback or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 33.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 77.8% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.43% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.95/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2020 brings a sixth-generation redesign with a larger touchscreen, updated safety tech, and new engines.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $22,261, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $21,056 average.
- It emphasizes reliability, low cost, and high resale with a more straightforward everyday-use focus.
The bottom line: If you want the better value today, the 2020 is the stronger buy because pricing has eased and inventory is healthy. If you are willing to spend more for a slightly newer model, the 2021 is the cleaner alternative for buyers who prioritize long-term simplicity over upfront savings.
