Why it stands out
The 2020 Subaru Crosstrek stands out as a practical small crossover that leans on simplicity rather than flash. It uses a four-cylinder boxer engine, a manual or continuously variable automatic transmission, and Subaru’s Symmetrical all-wheel drive system. Built from a car designed for basic transportation, it trades technological complexity for personality, with generous ground clearance, protective bodywork, and pedestal-style roof rails that make it especially useful for everyday hauling and bad-weather driving.
For 2020, automatic climate control and a new rear-seat reminder system became standard, and versions with a CVT gained Subaru SI-Drive driving modes and standard EyeSight safety features. That combination helps explain why the Crosstrek appeals to buyers who want a compact vehicle that feels easy to live with and well equipped for its size. Owner feedback also lines up with that formula, with praise for its value, comfortable driving experience, safety features, and gas mileage.
There are tradeoffs, though. The Crosstrek’s base engine is described as anemic, and the CVT can bring noise and transmission droning. Even so, the 2020 model’s mix of standard all-wheel drive, useful ground clearance, and strong everyday practicality gives it a clear identity: it is a small crossover built to handle commuting, snow, and light adventure without asking much from its driver.

We live in a rural area, and this model is perfect for the kind of driving we do. And the electronics seem to be something well be able to use fairly easily (we are older), which means a lot. So many safety features that will be really helpful!

The crosstrek limited trim line gives you more for your money than the top trim lines in many other makers. It’s comparable in size to the Mazda CX30 (although is a bit bigger than the CX30). I’d describe it as sporty luxury that can off-road if needed!

An incredible value car, along with amazing features. It is perfect for every day commutes, as well as more adventurous trips. It has amazing safety features (ie: adjusted cruise control) that gives that extra peace of mind. It is also very comfortable. The Crosstrek gives you enough space, but its not too large. A perfect fit for the adventurer.

Good value. Eyesight has already saved me from one fender bender. Fits a lot of stuff if you fold seats down. Seats are not the most comfortable and I can’t grab the steering wheel the same way I did in my 2006 because there are so many buttons on it.

|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $19,262 |
| Year-Round Low | $18,983 |
| Year-Round High | $20,108 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $20,118 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −4.26% |

There are 2,174 listings available, which suggests solid inventory for shoppers comparing prices and trims.
Is the 2020 Subaru Crosstrek a good car?
Yes — the 2020 Subaru Crosstrek earns a 4.86/5 user rating, which points to strong owner satisfaction. Owners consistently praise its value, comfortable driving experience, safety features, and gas mileage, and those strengths fit especially well if you want a practical small crossover for commuting, bad-weather driving, and light adventure. The market also looks reasonably accessible, with 35.9% of listings marked as good or great deals.
Is the 2020 Subaru Crosstrek reliable?
Owners rate it 4.86/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback also emphasizes that it is a reliable choice for daily commutes and adventurous trips, with dependable everyday usability and confidence-inspiring safety. For used buyers, that kind of satisfaction usually lowers long-term ownership risk, especially if the vehicle has been maintained well and checked carefully before purchase.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Subaru Crosstrek?
At 73% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report to confirm accident records, title status, and service history. Put inspection priority on body condition, alignment, and any signs of prior repair, since those details matter more when a listing has a past incident. It also makes sense to focus on overall condition and maintenance consistency, especially if you want the Crosstrek’s practical value without taking on avoidable surprises.

This looks like a moderate market for selective buyers, with enough inventory to compare options and enough deal activity to reward patience.

What is the 2020 Subaru Crosstrek's resale value?
The current average of $19,262 sits slightly below last year's $20,118.
That softer pricing can help you buy more carefully now, but it also means future resale may depend heavily on how well the vehicle is maintained and presented. If you keep mileage reasonable, preserve condition, and avoid accident history, you should be in a better position when it comes time to sell. Strong owner satisfaction can also help support demand in the used market.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.86/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2020 Subaru Crosstrek or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 35.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 73% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.26% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.86/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $20,849, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $19,262 average.
- It adds a Sport trim and an available 2.5-liter engine.
The bottom line: If you want the better value, the 2020 is the stronger starting point because it combines lower pricing with strong owner satisfaction and decent deal availability. If you are willing to pay more for a newer model year and want the added engine and trim choices, the 2021 is the better secondary path for buyers who prioritize updates over price.
