CarGurus Analysis: 2020 Mazda CX-5
overall

Summary
With 2,113 currently listed for sale and an average price of $20,207.00, 30.9% of 2020 Mazda CX-5s for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2020 Mazda CX-5 4.83 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.67 / 10.
71.1% of 2020 CX-5 models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2020 Mazda CX-5 stands out by aiming a mainstream compact crossover toward premium territory. Mazda’s approach is to combine the value of a mainstream brand with the design, materials, and technology more commonly associated with luxury vehicles, and that gives the CX-5 a more upscale feel than many shoppers expect in this segment. It also benefits from being part of the most popular vehicle segment in America, which helps explain why it has become the automaker’s most popular vehicle.
What makes the 2020 Mazda CX-5 appealing is the way it blends style and substance. The available expert impressions point to premium interior materials, stylish design, and a fun-to-drive character, while owner feedback reinforces the comfortable interior and smooth, quiet ride. That said, the CX-5 is not without compromises: the expert summary notes outdated technology, and some owners wished for more cargo space, more rear legroom, and more power from the engine.

We got the 2020 grand touring, with the leather interior, beautiful stitching and awesome features. We’ve been super impressed with all the little and big features of the car. The commander knob (radio control knob down by the cup holders) is actually super nice. I love not reaching up to the infotainment screen. The car overall feels luxurious at a better MSRP than say a Lexus, Mercedes or Audi. I don’t think this car is missing anything, I highly recommend if you’re Apple fans like we are that you get car play. That upgrades the entertainment system by a ton! Definitely a great product by Apple and you’ll want to have it equipped with the car, this can easily replace your navigation system (and is way better than the stock nav system) so we didn’t bother installing the Mazda nav system.

How much does the 2020 Mazda CX-5 cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $20,216 |
| Year-Round Low | $19,199.63 |
| Year-Round High | $20,742.85 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $20,747 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −2.56% |
Prices have softened 2.56% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 2,196 listings available, which suggests solid inventory for comparison shopping.
If you find a listing below $19,199.63, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2020 Mazda CX-5 a good car?
Yes — the 2020 Mazda CX-5 earns a 4.83/5 user rating and a 7.67/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Safety at 10/10.
Owners consistently praise the comfortable interior, smooth and quiet ride, and the luxurious feel. They also highlight the ample power on the highway and the safety features, which reinforces the CX-5’s upscale appeal.
The trade-offs are familiar: some owners want more cargo space, more rear legroom, and more power from the engine. That lines up with the CX-5’s mission of bringing a premium feel to a mainstream compact crossover, especially if you want style and substance in a family-friendly package.
With 33.7% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have room to shop selectively.
Is the 2020 Mazda CX-5 reliable?
Owners rate it 4.83/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner summary points to a vehicle that feels comfortable, quiet, and satisfying to live with over time, and it also reflects confidence in the CX-5’s safety features. That kind of feedback matters when you want a used SUV you can count on day after day.
The expert evaluation also emphasizes Mazda’s strong engineering and quality, which supports the case for dependable ownership. If you’re buying used, the main long-term risk is less about outright durability and more about choosing a well-kept example with the right equipment and condition.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Mazda CX-5?
At 70.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a careful inspection of bodywork, panel alignment, and signs of prior repair. It also makes sense to focus on interior condition, since the CX-5’s cabin quality is a major part of its appeal. If you’re comparing trims, make sure the equipment level matches what you expect, especially on lower-priced examples.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: Sport trim is the most basic version, while higher trims add more upscale cabin materials and more equipment. The biggest feature gaps show up in the lower trims, where the cabin and tech setup are simpler.
- Powertrain: The standard 2.5-liter four-cylinder makes 187 horsepower and 186 pound-feet of torque, while the turbocharged version in the upper trims delivers 250 hp and 320 lb-ft on premium fuel, or 227 hp and 310 lb-ft on regular fuel.
- Safety package: The i-Activsense suite includes adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability, forward collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane departure warning, and lane-keep assist. Adaptive headlights come standard with Grand Touring trim.
- Infotainment: Sport trim gets a 7-inch touchscreen, while Touring adds Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Grand Touring upgrades to an 8-inch touchscreen, and Signature adds navigation, a surround-view camera system, and a SiriusXM data subscription.
- Fuel efficiency: The turbocharged engine is rated at 24 mpg combined, compared with 26 mpg combined for the naturally aspirated engine with all-wheel drive and 28 mpg combined with front-wheel drive.
Which 2020 Mazda CX-5 trim should I buy?
The 2020 Mazda CX-5 is offered in 5 trim levels: Sport, Touring, Grand Touring, Grand Touring Reserve, and Signature.
Here's the short version:
- Sport: This is the entry point, and it gives you the core CX-5 experience with the standard engine and basic tech. It makes sense if you want the lowest price and care more about the driving feel than extra luxury features.
- Touring: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds Apple CarPlay and Android Auto without pushing you into the pricier upper trims. If you want a balanced mix of value and everyday convenience, this is the one to focus on.
- Grand Touring: This trim adds a larger 8-inch touchscreen, satellite radio, and a 10-speaker Bose sound system. It suits you if you want a more premium cabin experience without going all the way to the turbo models.
- Grand Touring Reserve: This is where the turbocharged engine arrives, so you get a major jump in power and standard AWD. Choose it if stronger acceleration matters more to you than maximizing value.
- Signature: This is the most luxurious version, with Nappa leather, real wood, a black headliner, navigation, and a surround-view camera system. It’s the right pick if you want the most upscale CX-5 experience and are willing to pay for it.
The safety package is standard on most trims, while adaptive headlights come standard only on Grand Touring trim.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Mazda CX-5?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop with some leverage if you’re patient.
- Deal availability: 33.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 2,196 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.56% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 70.4% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $19,199.63, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Mazda CX-5's resale value?
The current average of $20,216 sits slightly below last year's $20,747.
That softer pricing suggests the CX-5 is currently in a buyer-friendly phase, which can help you if you’re shopping now. For a future seller, it means you should expect value to depend heavily on condition, mileage, and trim, especially because the market is already pricing in some depreciation.
If you buy well and keep the vehicle in strong shape, you’ll be better positioned to recover value later. The current trend also suggests that well-equipped, well-maintained examples should remain easier to move than rougher ones.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.83/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2020 Mazda CX-5 safe?
It earns a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and a five-star overall rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
It earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.
The standard i-Activsense suite includes adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability, forward collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane departure warning, and lane-keep assist. Standard LED headlights and rain-sensing wipers add to the safety story, and adaptive headlights come standard on Grand Touring trim.
That combination makes the CX-5 a strong choice if safety is a top priority. The main caveat is that some of the more advanced lighting equipment is reserved for higher trims.
Should I buy a 2020 Mazda CX-5 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 33.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 70.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.56% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.83/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2020 model year combines premium interior materials, strong safety, and a fun-to-drive character.
Consider the 2019 if:
- At $19,069, the 2019 costs less than the current year's $20,216 average.
- It adds improved handling, smartphone connectivity, and more power in top trims.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $22,183, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $20,216 average.
- It brings enhanced tech and a new Carbon Edition.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, safety, and upscale feel, the 2020 is the primary year to target. If your budget is tighter, the 2019 can save you money while keeping much of the CX-5’s appeal. If you want the newer tech updates and don’t mind paying more, the 2021 is the better alternative.
