How much does the 2020 Mazda CX-5 cost?

Prices have softened 2.64% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 2,557 listings available, which suggests you have a solid amount of inventory to compare.

Is the 2020 Mazda CX-5 a good car?

Yes — the 2020 Mazda CX-5 earns 4.8/5 from owners and 7.7/10 from our experts. The standout strength is Safety at 10/10.

Owners consistently praise the comfortable interior, smooth and quiet ride, and ample power on the highway. They also highlight the luxurious feel and safety features, which fit the CX-5’s upscale positioning.

The main trade-offs are outdated technology and some complaints about limited cargo space and rear legroom. For you, that means the CX-5 makes the most sense if you want a compact SUV that feels more premium than average and can live with a less modern tech setup.

The model’s premium-leaning mission is especially appealing if you want mainstream practicality with a more upscale cabin and driving experience. Good and great deals account for 33.5% of listings, so there is still room to shop selectively.

Is the 2020 Mazda CX-5 reliable?

Owners rate it 4.8/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

Owners describe the CX-5 as dependable and trouble-free, with several noting that it feels like a vehicle you can count on over time. That confidence is reinforced by the strong overall ownership sentiment and the way buyers repeatedly praise the SUV’s comfort and quality.

The expert review also points to a solid, well-engineered package that feels built to deliver lasting value. Mazda’s premium positioning and strong safety reputation add to the sense that this is a vehicle designed for long-term ownership rather than short-term flash.

For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about core dependability and more about whether the specific example has been maintained well and still feels fresh inside.

What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Mazda CX-5?

At 70.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and confirm whether any prior damage was repaired properly. Then prioritize a thorough inspection of the body, interior wear, and any signs that the vehicle has been used hard or repaired poorly.

Pay close attention to the cabin and cargo area, since owners mention limited rear space and cargo room. If you want the most satisfying version, focus on how the tech and equipment level match your expectations before you commit.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: Sport, Touring, Grand Touring, Grand Touring Reserve, and Signature. The base Sport has a 7-inch touchscreen and the core Mazda Connect setup, while Touring adds Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Grand Touring brings an 8-inch touchscreen, satellite radio, and a 10-speaker Bose system, and Signature adds navigation, a surround-view camera system, and SiriusXM data services. If you want the best value, Touring is the trim that adds the most everyday usability without jumping too far up the price ladder.
• Powertrain: The standard 2.5-liter four-cylinder makes 187 horsepower and 186 pound-feet of torque, paired with a six-speed automatic. Front-wheel drive is standard and all-wheel drive is optional. Higher trims add a turbocharged version that makes 250 hp and 320 lb-ft on premium fuel, or 227 hp and 310 lb-ft on regular fuel, and it comes only with AWD.
• Safety package: The i-Activsense suite includes adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability, forward collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane departure warning, and lane-keep assist. Standard LED headlights and rain-sensing wipers are included, while adaptive headlights come standard on Grand Touring trim.
• Infotainment: Sport trim gets a 7-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth, HD Radio, text messaging support, integrated internet radio apps, and E911 emergency notification. Touring adds Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Grand Touring upgrades to an 8-inch touchscreen, satellite radio, and a 10-speaker Bose system, while Signature adds navigation, a surround-view camera system, and SiriusXM data services.
• Fuel efficiency: The naturally aspirated engine with front-wheel drive is rated at 28 mpg combined, while the same engine with all-wheel drive is rated at 26 mpg combined. The turbocharged version is rated at 24 mpg combined.

Which 2020 Mazda CX-5 trim should I buy?

The 2020 Mazda CX-5 is offered in 5 trim levels: Sport, Touring, Grand Touring, Grand Touring Reserve, and Signature.

Here's the short version:

• Sport: This is the entry point, and it gives you the core CX-5 experience with the standard engine, a 7-inch touchscreen, and the full safety suite. It makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the model, but it is the least feature-rich choice.
• Touring: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds Apple CarPlay and Android Auto on top of the Sport’s equipment. If you want the most useful everyday upgrade without stretching too far, this is the trim to target.
• Grand Touring: This trim adds an 8-inch touchscreen, satellite radio, a 10-speaker Bose sound system, and standard adaptive headlights. It is a strong pick if you want a more upscale feel and better night visibility.
• Grand Touring Reserve: This is where the turbocharged engine arrives, along with AWD-only hardware. Choose it if you want noticeably stronger performance and are willing to pay for it.
• Signature: This is the most luxurious version, with navigation, a surround-view camera system, SiriusXM data services, and premium cabin materials. It suits you best if you want the most upscale CX-5 experience.

The safety package is standard on most trims, and adaptive headlights come standard on Grand Touring.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Mazda CX-5?

This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you stay patient.

• Deal availability: 33.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 2,557 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 2.64% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 70.9% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $19,185, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2020 Mazda CX-5's resale value?

The current average of $19,860 sits slightly below last year's $20,399.

That softer pricing suggests the CX-5 has already absorbed some depreciation, which can help future sellers if the market stabilizes. If you buy at a favorable price now, you may have a better chance of limiting your loss later.

The model’s premium feel and strong owner satisfaction can help support demand when it is time to sell. Well-kept examples with desirable equipment should remain easier to market than neglected ones.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.8/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2020 Mazda CX-5 safe?

The 2020 Mazda CX-5 earns a Top Safety Pick+ rating from IIHS and a five-star overall rating from NHTSA.

It earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.

The standard i-Activsense suite includes adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability, forward collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane departure warning, and lane-keep assist. Standard LED headlights and rain-sensing wipers are also included.

Adaptive headlights are the main safety-related upgrade, and they come standard on Grand Touring trim. That means lower trims still get a strong safety package, but you may want to step up if you value enhanced nighttime visibility.

Should I buy a 2020 Mazda CX-5 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2020 if:

• 33.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 70.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 2.64% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.8/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It blends premium design, strong safety, and fun-to-drive character.

Consider the 2019 if:

• At $18,719, the 2019 costs less than the current year's $19,860 average.
• It adds improved handling, smartphone connectivity, and stronger turbo trims.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $21,799, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $19,860 average.
• It adds a new trim and updated tech while keeping the CX-5’s core strengths.

The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, safety, and upscale feel, the 2020 is the smart default. If you are price-sensitive, the 2019 is worth a look for its lower average price and similar core appeal.
