Is the 2020 Lexus ES a good car?

Yes — the 2020 Lexus ES earns 5/5 from owners and 8.00/10 from expert testing.

The standout strength is Safety at 10/10.

What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Lexus ES?

At 69.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a careful pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has higher mileage or incomplete service records. Focus on overall condition, signs of prior bodywork, and whether the cabin and electronics still reflect the car’s premium positioning. Because this model is meant to be a refined daily driver, you’ll want to make sure the ride, interior, and safety systems all feel as composed as advertised.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base ES 350 includes a power moonroof, synthetic leather upholstery, 10-way power-adjustable front seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, proximity entry, push-button start, and an 8-inch infotainment screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Higher trims add features like perforated leather, woodgrain trim, ambient cabin lighting, a hands-free power trunk, semi-aniline leather upholstery, and rear-window shades, while the F Sport brings a more aggressive look and unique interior touches.
• Powertrain: The ES uses a 3.5-liter V6 with 302 horsepower and 267 pound-feet of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive. It delivers confident acceleration and a calm, refined ride rather than sporty urgency.
• Safety package: Every ES comes with Lexus Safety System+ 2.0, including forward collision avoidance, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, dynamic radar cruise control, automatic high beams, pedestrian and cyclist detection, lane-keep assist, and lane-tracing assist. Standard safety equipment also includes front- and side-impact airbags, traction control, stability control, and a tire-pressure monitoring system.
• Infotainment: The standard setup uses an 8-inch display with Lexus Remote Touch, and a 12.3-inch screen is available. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, and the system can be paired with a 17-speaker Mark Levinson audio system and a head-up display.
• Fuel efficiency: The ES 350 returns 22/32/26 mpg, while the ES 350 F Sport returns 22/31/25 mpg.

Which 2020 Lexus ES trim should I buy?

The 2020 Lexus ES is offered in 4 trim levels: 350 FWD, Luxury, Ultra Luxury, and F Sport.

Here's the short version:

• 350 FWD: This is the value play if you want the core ES experience at the lowest entry point. You still get the power moonroof, synthetic leather upholstery, power front seats, dual-zone climate control, and standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, so you’re not giving up the essentials.
• Luxury: This is the best-value upgrade if you want a more upscale cabin without jumping too far in price. It adds perforated leather seats, woodgrain trim, ambient lighting, and the content from the Premium Package, making it the sweet spot for comfort-focused shoppers.
• Ultra Luxury: Choose this if rear-seat comfort and a more indulgent feel matter most. It adds a hands-free power trunk, semi-aniline leather upholstery, a power rear-window sunshade, and manual side-rear window shades.
• F Sport: Pick this only if you want the sportiest appearance and a slightly more animated setup. It gets a unique grille, lower front valence, dark accents, unique wheels, and distinctive interior trim, but the car still remains comfort-first rather than truly sporty.

Every trim comes with Lexus Safety System+ 2.0 as standard.

What is the 2020 Lexus ES's resale value?

The current average of $29,729 sits slightly below last year's $29,862.

That small decline suggests the market has been stable rather than volatile, which is helpful if you plan to resell later. A steady price pattern can make it easier to estimate future value, especially for a model that already has broad appeal among comfort-focused buyers. Strong condition and clean history should matter a lot when it comes time to sell.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

That standard suite gives you a broad set of driver-assistance features across the lineup, with no trim-level safety gap called out in the source material.

Should I buy a 2020 Lexus ES or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2020 if:

• 38.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 69.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It adds standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto while keeping the comfort-first formula.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $31,421, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $29,729 average.
• It keeps the same relaxed, comfortable character while adding a slightly more refined overall presentation.

The bottom line: If you want the better value, the 2020 is the smarter starting point because it combines stable pricing, strong owner satisfaction, and a well-equipped standard feature set. If you’re willing to pay more for a newer model year, the 2021 is the cleaner alternative for buyers who want to stay close to the same formula while spending a bit more.
