Why it stands out
The 2020 Jeep Cherokee stands out as a compact SUV that blends Jeep styling with a more crossover-like shape and a strong emphasis on available all-weather traction. By this point in the model’s third generation, it had already moved away from the boxier, more traditional Cherokee look, and the 2019 refresh gave it a conventional one-piece headlight design, a new hood, bumper, fog lamps, and taillamps. It also gained a 7-inch touchscreen as standard, along with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, which helps make the Cherokee feel more modern and easier to live with than earlier versions.
For 2020, Jeep added new wheels and colors across various trims, including Sangria and Spitfire Orange, and Alexa was added to Uconnect 8.4 systems with navigation. The Cherokee’s appeal also comes from its available powertrains and capability-focused hardware: the model line offered a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder with 270 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque alongside the V6, and Jeep continued to offer features such as Selec-Terrain and, on certain trims, a low-range transfer case and rear differential lock. That said, the generation’s reputation is not spotless, and the buying guide notes major transmission issues in early third-generation models, while the broader pros and cons list points to poor efficiency and some bad engines through the years.

This is a great vehicle. It has every feature that I asked for & more. It will have no issue towing my camper or hauling my kayaks.

I am.... impressed with the 2020 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk. Specifically, the non-elite version has less fluff and is less likely to need repair amongst the electronics (no panorama roof, no rear tailgate motor, no advanced controls such as advanced cruise control, no heated seats or heated steering wheel & no NAV - etc. It does what it is supposed to do. I am also averaging 28 mpg versus the listed 24 mpg. I also added Falken Wildpeak ATW/3 tires to it (which makes it a better off road vehicle) also. Im pleased as punch with this Cherokee. Its a shame that Stellantis (Chrysler/Jeeps parent company) did not support this line of vehicles for the past 2 years & shut down the Belvidere plant (20 miles away from me) last month. There is zero reason why Stellantis cannot make money on this line of vehicles.

The vehicle is very capable on and off road. Plenty of power to get up to speed on the highway, pass someone, and 4500lb towing capacity. Also it is the only trailhawk in the lineup to have a true rear locker.

The only thing I dont like about the 2020 jeep Cherokee is the power. It lacks the take off power I prefer. But other than that its a beautiful vehicle rides smoothly and is comfortable.

How much does the 2020 Jeep Cherokee cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $16,416 |
| Year-Round Low | $16,416 |
| Year-Round High | $18,136 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $18,140 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −9.51% |
Prices have softened 9.51% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 5,387 listings available, which suggests solid inventory for comparison shopping.
Is the 2020 Jeep Cherokee a good car?
Yes — the 2020 Jeep Cherokee earns a 4.8/5 user rating, which points to strong owner satisfaction. Drivers commonly praise its strong performance, comfortable ride, and spacious, well-equipped interior. For you, that means it can make sense if you want a compact SUV with Jeep character, available all-weather traction, and a cabin that feels easy to live with. With 31.4% of listings marked as good or great deals, there is still room to shop selectively.
Is the 2020 Jeep Cherokee reliable?
Owners rate it 4.8/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback also points to a dependable ownership experience, with drivers describing the Cherokee as comfortable and enjoyable over time. The same feedback highlights strong performance and a well-equipped interior, which usually matters when you plan to keep a vehicle for the long haul. For used buyers, the main risk is making sure you avoid a poorly maintained example, since condition can matter more than the badge on a vehicle this age.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Jeep Cherokee?
At 71.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and confirm whether any prior damage was cosmetic or structural. Then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing price looks unusually attractive. Focus on overall condition, maintenance records, and how the vehicle drives, since those details matter more than mileage alone.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Jeep Cherokee?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently but should move quickly on the best listings.
- Deal availability: 31.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 5,387 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 9.51% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 71.4% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $16,416, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Jeep Cherokee's resale value?
The current average of $16,416 sits slightly below last year's $18,140.
That softer pricing can help you buy at a more favorable entry point, but it also means future resale gains may be more limited if the market stays soft. If you plan to sell later, condition and documentation will matter a lot, because buyers tend to reward clean history and well-kept examples. A lower purchase price can still work in your favor if you keep the vehicle in strong shape and avoid overpaying today.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.8/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2020 Jeep Cherokee or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 31.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 71.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 9.51% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.8/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $18,561, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $16,416 average.
- It adds more impressive, easy-to-use technology.
The bottom line: If you want the better value today, the 2020 is the stronger starting point because pricing has softened and deal availability is decent. If you can stretch your budget and want the newer-year experience, the 2021 is the secondary path to consider.
