CarGurus Analysis: 2020 Ford Ranger
overall

Summary
With 142 currently listed for sale and an average price of $22,326, 21.1% of 2020 Ford Ranger listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2020 Ford Ranger 4.79 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8 / 10.
98.6% of 2020 Ford Ranger listings on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2020 Ford Ranger stands out as a midsize pickup that blends capability with technology. It has decent fuel economy for a pickup truck, and its optional infotainment system is terrific. It also brings towing and hauling ability for tasks like pulling a boat trailer or carrying a truckload of home improvement gear. Those strengths make it appealing to buyers who want a truck that can handle weekend projects and outdoor gear without moving up to a larger pickup.
At the same time, the Ranger is not especially polished in the ways some shoppers may expect. Its cabin materials feel cheap, and advanced safety features are not standard. The truck also falls short on cabin comfort and everyday driving dynamics, so its appeal is strongest for buyers who prioritize utility, technology, and a stylish design over a more refined interior and smoother day-to-day manners.

The truck is extremely comfortable and stable on the road. Amenities are more than adequate and the quality exceeds expectations. Power is more than sufficient and although I was concerned about the 10 speed transmission, it operates flawlessly. Very pleased with this truck.

I had a Lariat. It was comfortable for me but not for people over 6 feet tall..It had every feature I wanted except Fords trailer backing system. It was a good value compared to the 150. It handled my 7200 pound boat and trailer on Tennessees hilly roads easily. Unfortunately I crashed it and it was totaled. It protected me in the cabin without serious injuries. I plan to replace it with a 2024 Ranger.

Is the 2020 Ford Ranger a good car?
Yes — the 2020 Ford Ranger earns a 4.79/5 user rating and an 8/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Performance and Technology.
Drivers consistently praise its great value, enjoyable driving experience, comfortable ride, sufficient power, and high-quality features. The Ranger’s appeal is strongest if you want a midsize pickup that balances capability with useful tech and a stylish design.
The trade-offs are clear: the cabin materials feel cheap, and advanced safety features are not standard. That makes it a better fit if you care more about utility, towing, and weekend-project versatility than interior polish or a luxury feel.
Good and great deals account for 35.1% of listings, so you still have room to shop selectively.
Is the 2020 Ford Ranger reliable?
Owners rate it 4.79/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Drivers describe it as a truck they can count on for a comfortable ride, sufficient power, and strong value over time. The expert evaluation also points to a straightforward, proven setup with a single engine and transmission pairing, which supports the Ranger’s dependable character.
Ford also includes a year of remote start and three months or three gigabytes of complimentary hotspot service with FordPass Connect on the base trim, which can reduce early ownership friction. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is making sure the truck has been maintained well and that any recall-related work has been completed.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Ford Ranger?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 77% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still check the report carefully, because a clean listing percentage does not replace a proper history review. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that focuses on the transmission, electronics, and overall wear, especially if the truck has been used for towing or off-road driving. Pay close attention to cabin condition too, since the interior materials are not especially upscale and can show use quickly.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The XL is the most basic version, with vinyl floors, manual air conditioning, cloth upholstery, and manually adjustable front seats. The XLT adds the most meaningful everyday upgrades, including 17-inch aluminum wheels, dual-zone climate control, cruise control, SYNC 3, and Ford CoPilot 360, while the Lariat adds leather upholstery, heated and power-adjustable front seats, push-button start, and ambient cabin lighting. The XLT is the best-value trim if you want the strongest mix of equipment and price.
- Powertrain: Every trim uses a 2.3-liter EcoBoost turbocharged four-cylinder with 270 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque, paired with a ten-speed automatic. Rear-wheel drive is standard, with available four-wheel drive and low-range gearing. Fuel economy is 21 mpg city, 26 highway, 23 combined with RWD, or 22 mpg city, 24 highway, 22 combined with 4WD.
- Safety package: Ford CoPilot 360 adds lane-departure warning and avoidance, automatic high beams, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and reverse parking sensors. An available Technology Package adds forward parking sensors and adaptive cruise control. These features are not standard on every trim, so check carefully before you buy.
- Infotainment: The XLT’s SYNC 3 system uses an 8-inch touchscreen and includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It also offers voice-activated navigation and pinch-to-zoom functionality. The XL stays much simpler, while the Lariat adds a B&O sound system with ten speakers.
- Fuel efficiency: With rear-wheel drive, the Ranger returns 21 mpg city, 26 highway, 23 combined. With 4WD, it returns 22 mpg city, 24 highway, 22 combined.
Which 2020 Ford Ranger trim should I buy?
The 2020 Ford Ranger is offered in 3 trim levels: XL, XLT, and Lariat.
Here's the short version:
- XL: This is the most affordable way into the Ranger, but it is very basic. You get steel wheels, vinyl floors, manual air conditioning, cloth upholstery, and a simple audio setup, so it makes sense mainly if you want the lowest entry price and do not mind a work-truck feel.
- XLT: This is the best-value trim. It adds the equipment most shoppers will actually notice every day, including 17-inch aluminum wheels, dual-zone climate control, cruise control, SYNC 3 with an 8-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Ford CoPilot 360.
- Lariat: This is the comfort-focused choice. It brings leather upholstery, heated and power-adjustable front seats, push-button start, ambient cabin lighting, LED bed lighting, and a premium B&O audio system, so it suits you if you want the most upscale Ranger experience.
Ford CoPilot 360 is added on the XLT, while the base XL does not get that full safety suite.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Ford Ranger?
This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you are patient.
- Deal availability: 35.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 2,480 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.97% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 77.0% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $23,766, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Ford Ranger's resale value?
The current average of $23,949 sits slightly below last year's $26,309.
That decline suggests the Ranger has become more accessible for buyers, which can help you avoid overpaying today. For a future seller, the softer market means resale upside may be more limited than it was a year ago, so condition and mileage matter even more. Well-kept examples should still hold interest because the Ranger’s mix of capability and tech keeps it relevant in the midsize truck segment.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.79/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2020 Ford Ranger safe?
The 2020 Ford Ranger earns Good ratings from IIHS in driver’s-side small-overlap, moderate overlap, side, and roof-strength crash tests, and it earns Superior for vehicle-to-vehicle crash prevention technology.
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
Ford CoPilot 360 adds lane-departure warning and avoidance, automatic high beams, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and reverse parking sensors. An available Technology Package adds forward parking sensors and adaptive cruise control. The base trim does include automatic emergency braking, forward collision avoidance, and pedestrian detection, but the broader driver-assistance suite is not standard across the lineup.
The main caveat is that the Ranger earned only an Average result in the passenger-side small-overlap test, and pedestrian-sensing tech was rated lower than its best crash-prevention results. That makes trim selection and feature verification especially important if safety equipment is a priority.
Should I buy a 2020 Ford Ranger or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 35.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 77% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.97% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.79/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It balances capability, technology, and towing strength without moving up to a larger pickup.
Consider the 2019 if:
- At $22,448, the 2019 costs less than the current year's $23,949 average.
- It offers a simpler, value-focused return to the U.S. market.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $26,039, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $23,949 average.
- It adds a more serious off-road identity with the Tremor package.
The bottom line: If you want the best mix of price, capability, and available tech, the 2020 is the smart default. If your budget is tighter, the 2019 is the cheaper path into the Ranger formula. If you want a more trail-focused setup and are willing to pay more, the 2021 is the better fit.
