For 2020, the Silverado 3500HD stands taller, longer, and wider. It competes with the Ford F-350 Super Duty and the Ram 3500.
Shoppers of the Silverado 3500HD can select from one of two V8 engines. The gas-powered 6.6-liter V8 engine makes 401 horsepower and 464 pound-feet of torque, delivering an increase of 11 percent in horsepower and 22 percent in torque. It pairs with a 6-speed automatic transmission. Buyers can also select a Duramax turbo-diesel 6.6-liter V8, which makes 445 horsepower and 910 pound-feet of torque. This engine routes power through a new 10-speed Allison transmission. With both engines, power is sent to the rear wheels or available four-wheel drive (4WD) with low range.
Three cab types are available for the 2020 Silverado 3500HD: regular cab, double cab, and crew cab. The regular cab is a one-row, single-cab version, the double cab is an extended cab with real doors, and the crew cab is a full 4-door, 2-row version. For 2020, the crew cab has an even more spacious cabin. In addition to the three cab sizes, drivers can choose from two bed lengths: a 6-foot-9-inch bed and an 8-foot bed. A single-rear-wheel and dual-rear-wheel setups are also available. In all, there are 22 potential bed/cab/axle configurations for this big truck.
The bed itself, called the DuraBed, is a feat of versatility. The bed’s inner panels have been pushed closer to the outer walls of the truck where possible, yielding even more bed space. This allows the long bed to have a class-leading volume of 83.5 cubic feet of cargo space up to the bedrail. The bed is also available with a power tailgate operated by either a key fob or via a toggle in the cabin. Outside the bed, helpful bed corner steps can accommodate up to 500 pounds. For 2020, these corner steps are joined by side steps, which are located behind the cab and ahead of the rear wheels.
There are five trims for the 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD: Work Truck, Custom, LT, LTZ, and High Country. Standard features for the Work Truck include a 7-inch touchscreen that comes with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bluetooth connectivity, and a USB port. Higher trims are available with 17-, 18-, or 20-inch wheels, a larger 8-inch infotainment screen, leather upholstery, heated and cooled front seats, a head-up display, and a navigation system.
When properly equipped, the Silverado 3500HD can tow up to 35,500 pounds and can provide a payload capacity of 7,442 pounds. The Silverado HD is available with an integrated power take-off (PTO), ensuring the ability to power commercial equipment without the need for an aftermarket PTO adapter. Other work-ready features include an engine-block heater outlet with easy outlet access and convenient mounting points for a snow plow. Chevrolet also offers the myChevrolet mobile app, which features smart trailer integration, which allows the user to conduct a trailer light test and monitor trailer diagnostics and tire pressure.
The Silverado HD comes with a full array of front- and side-impact airbags, traction control, a tire-pressure-monitoring system, and a reversing camera. The 3500HD is also available with a 15-view camera system. The 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD will go on sale late in the summer of 2019.
