Is the 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD a good car?

Yes — the 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD earns a 5/5 user rating and an 8.2/10 expert rating. The model scores 10/10 across Performance and Form and function.

It is presented as a do-it-all heavy-duty pickup that can handle worksite duty and family commuting, and it pairs serious capability with easy-to-use technology. The trade-offs are clear: its design may be polarizing, and its value is described as poor for the money.

The market still shows 30.0% good or great deals, so you can find attractive pricing if you shop carefully.

Is the 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD reliable?

Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The Silverado 2500HD is framed as a capable, modern heavy-duty truck that combines serious utility with straightforward cabin controls and useful technology. Its powertrain lineup is built around strong V8 options, and the diesel setup is described as especially punchy once it builds boost.

The truck’s heavy-duty hardware and broad capability suggest it is built for demanding use, but used buyers should still pay close attention to maintenance history and how hard the truck was worked.

What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD?

At 74.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially if the truck has towing or worksite use in its past. Focus on body condition, bed wear, and signs of heavy-duty abuse, since these trucks are often bought to work hard. It also helps to compare trim equipment carefully so you know whether the truck has the comfort and safety features you want.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Work Truck comes with a 7-inch touchscreen, a V8 engine, Bluetooth connectivity, and a 3.5-inch digital instrument display, while the Custom adds 20-inch aluminum wheels, LED taillights, a body-color split grille bar, and side-mirror cornering lights. The LT adds a chrome grille, upgraded cloth seating, a larger infotainment screen, and a power lift-and-lower tailgate, and it is the recommended value choice. The LTZ adds leather upholstery, heated and cooled front seats, heated rear seats, a heated steering wheel, and remote start, while the High Country adds features such as a spray-on bed liner, front and rear park assist, and the power up-and-down tailgate.
• Powertrain: The Silverado HD offers two 6.6-liter V8s: a gas engine with 401 horsepower and 464 pound-feet of torque, and an available Duramax turbodiesel V8 with 445 horsepower and 910 pound-feet of torque. Both pair with a 10-speed automatic and rear-wheel drive or available 4WD with low-range gearing.
• Safety package: Safety Package II adds forward-collision avoidance, lane-departure warning, adaptive cruise control, and the Safety Alert Seat. Safety Package I adds front and rear parking sensors and blind-spot monitoring.
• Infotainment: Work Truck and Custom trims use a 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, while LT, LTZ, and High Country get an 8-inch touchscreen. Chevrolet also offers a 4G LTE WiFi hotspot, and wireless charging is standard on the High Country.
• Fuel efficiency: In testing, the truck returned about 17 mpg, and the 36-gallon tank gives it long-range capability.

Which 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD trim should I buy?

The 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD is offered in 5 trim levels: Work Truck, Custom, LT, LTZ, and High Country.

Here's the short version:

• Work Truck: This is the most basic version, but it still gives you a 7-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth, a V8 engine, and a digital instrument display. It makes sense if you want the lowest entry point and can live without the nicer cabin touches.
• Custom: This trim adds visual upgrades like 20-inch aluminum wheels, LED taillights, and a body-color grille bar, but it is still more style-focused than comfort-focused. It suits you if you want a little more presence without moving far up the price ladder.
• LT: This is the best-value trim because it adds upgraded cloth seating, a larger infotainment screen, a chrome grille, and a power lift-and-lower tailgate. It is the trim to target if you want the strongest mix of comfort and price.
• LTZ: This is the luxury-leaning choice, with leather upholstery, heated and cooled front seats, heated rear seats, a heated steering wheel, and remote start. It fits you best if you want a more premium daily-driving experience.
• High Country: This is the top trim and adds features such as a spray-on bed liner, front and rear park assist, and the power up-and-down tailgate. Choose it if you want the most equipment and are willing to pay for it.

Safety Package II adds forward-collision avoidance, lane-departure warning, adaptive cruise control, and the Safety Alert Seat.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently but should move quickly on strong listings.

• Deal availability: 30.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 2,404 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.36% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 74.8% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $38,478, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD's resale value?

The current average of $38,602 sits slightly below last year's $42,122.

That price movement suggests the truck has already absorbed some depreciation, which can help future sellers if the market stabilizes. If you buy at the right price and keep the truck in strong condition, you may have a better chance of limiting your loss later. Heavy-duty trucks with broad capability and strong demand can hold attention well, especially when they remain well equipped and well maintained.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD safe?

The Silverado HD comes with a reversing camera, traction control, and a full array of airbags. It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

Safety Package II adds forward-collision avoidance, lane-departure warning, adaptive cruise control, and the Safety Alert Seat. Safety Package I adds front and rear parking sensors and blind-spot monitoring. The LTZ improves on the reversing camera with a surround-view camera with trailer views, and those added systems are especially helpful on a truck this large.

Should I buy a 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2020 if:

• 30.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 74.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.36% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2020 model emphasizes multiple powertrain options and easy-to-use technology.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $39,951, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $38,602 average.
• It adds comfortable accommodations and innovative camera technology.

The bottom line: If you want the better price and strong current inventory, the 2020 is the smarter starting point. If you are willing to pay more for a newer model-year setup with added camera tech and a more livable cabin, the 2021 is worth a look.
