Is the 2020 BMW 8 Series a good car?

Generally — the 2020 BMW 8 Series earns a 4.2/5 user rating and an 8.67/10 expert rating. The model scores 10/10 across Performance and Technology.

Owners consistently praise the performance, sporty handling, luxurious features, tech, and interior design. The 8 Series also fits buyers who want a grand touring setup that emphasizes driving enjoyment and long-distance comfort, especially in the front seats.

The main trade-offs are a cramped back seat and an interior that some owners feel is a bit basic for the class. Even so, the market shows 31.8% good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2020 BMW 8 Series reliable?

Owners rate it 4.2/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.

User feedback points to a car that feels dependable and trouble-free enough to inspire confidence, with owners describing it as a vehicle they enjoy living with over time. The expert drive notes also frame it as a refined grand touring car built for comfortable long-distance use, which supports the sense that it is meant to be counted on for regular driving.

BMW’s standard equipment and well-rounded feature set add to the ownership appeal, and the car’s standard maintenance-friendly packaging helps it feel less barebones than some luxury rivals. For used buyers, the bigger risk is not outright reliability drama so much as the cost of keeping a premium car in top shape.

What should I look for when buying a used 2020 BMW 8 Series?

At 74.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has been modified or optioned heavily. Focus on body condition, interior wear, and whether the car’s luxury features and electronics work as intended, since those are central to the ownership experience.

Key things to evaluate:

• Powertrain: The 840i uses a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six with 335 horsepower and 368 pound-feet of torque, while the M850i uses a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 with 523 hp and 553 lb-ft. Both pair with an eight-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters and a manual mode.

Which 2020 BMW 8 Series trim should I buy?

The 2020 BMW 8 Series is offered in 3 trim levels: 840i, 840i xDrive, M850i.

Here's the short version:

• 840i: This is the best-value choice if you want the core 8 Series experience with the strongest mix of standard luxury equipment, strong performance, and lower starting cost. It already includes the big-ticket comfort and tech features most shoppers want.
• 840i xDrive: Choose this if you want the 840i formula with all-wheel drive for added traction and confidence. It makes sense if you live in a climate where extra grip matters more than rear-drive purity.
• M850i: This is the performance step-up, with the V8’s much higher output and the most powerful character in the lineup. It suits you if you want the most serious acceleration and are willing to pay for it.

The safety package starts with forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, and adaptive LED headlights, while more advanced driver-assistance features remain available rather than standard.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 BMW 8 Series?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.

• Deal availability: 31.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 214 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 7.17% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 74.3% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $40,103, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2020 BMW 8 Series's resale value?

The current average of $40,158 sits slightly below last year's $43,259.

That decline suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable entry point today. For a future seller, the key takeaway is that this model year is not showing strong upward price momentum, so resale gains are unlikely to come from market appreciation alone.

Instead, your best protection is buying well, keeping mileage and condition in check, and choosing a desirable configuration. Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.2/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2020 BMW 8 Series safe?

The BMW 840i Gran Coupe comes standard with advanced driver assistance features, including forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, and adaptive LED headlights.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

The available safety tech expands to adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and traffic jam assistant. That gives you a strong safety toolkit, though some of the more advanced features are not standard across the lineup.

Should I buy a 2020 BMW 8 Series or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2020 if:

• 31.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 74.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 7.17% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.2/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• The 2020 combines flagship-luxury comfort with a driver-focused grand touring setup.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $46,103, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $40,158 average.
• It adds a more statement-making luxury image and higher-stature positioning.

The bottom line: If you want the better value, the 2020 is the smarter starting point because it delivers the core 8 Series experience at a lower average price. If you care more about prestige and are comfortable paying more, the 2021 is the cleaner upgrade path.
