CarGurus Analysis: 2019 Volkswagen Tiguan

Summary
With 2,314 currently listed for sale and an average price of $14,094, 34.7% of 2019 Volkswagen Tiguan listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2019 Volkswagen Tiguan 4.38 / 5 stars.
66.2% of 2019 Volkswagen Tiguan listings on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2019 Volkswagen Tiguan stands out as a compact SUV that leans more toward space and refinement than flash. It was introduced in 2017 for the 2018 model year as a longer, seven-seat version of the Tiguan sold in other markets, and that extra practicality was a major part of its appeal. Volkswagen also positioned it as a mass-market choice, with some versions carrying a lower MSRP than the outgoing model. Inside, it offers a modern cabin with a sharp-edged design, and the front two rows have vast space, while the third row is best thought of as occasional-use seating.
For 2019, the Tiguan added R-Line variants with a sportier look and larger alloy wheels. It also kept the formula of a single turbocharged 2.0-liter engine, rated at 184 horsepower, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive as standard, with all-wheel drive available. Equipment is a strength, too: depending on trim, buyers could get a 6.5-inch or eight-inch touchscreen, Car-Net App-Connect, heated front seats, a blind spot monitor, Front Assist emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, and a panoramic sunroof with ambient lighting. That mix of space, features, and everyday usability makes the 2019 Tiguan appealing, though its driving character is more comfort-focused than sporty, and the third-row seats are limited in room.

I love my VW Tiguan SE for the panoramic sunroof and leather seats. The stereo system is pretty good, and the car is roomy and comfortable. Happy to have a third row for my family. Wish the trunk opened with the key fob bc it only unlocks it. Great value, def recommend!

We love it. It might miss a few functions like folding mirror, memory seats etc but a great SUV for the price. Runs great and we love the panoramic sunroof. Great value for the money

The car has pretty good features throughout the range. I have an SEL and it does what I would expect it to do. I think inflation has every car marked up right now, I dont ever recall a 4-year-old car costing this much. I would compare this to other small SUVs from Nissan, Toyota, and Mazda.

How much does the 2019 Volkswagen Tiguan cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $14,085 |
| Year-Round Low | $14,063 |
| Year-Round High | $15,749 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $15,750 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −10.57% |
Prices have softened 10.57% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 2,300 listings available, which suggests you have a meaningful amount of inventory to compare.
Is the 2019 Volkswagen Tiguan a good car?
Generally — the 4.38/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction. Owners consistently praise the Tiguan’s spaciousness, good value, and comfort-oriented tech features, and many also like the panoramic sunroof and everyday usability. It fits especially well if you want a compact SUV that prioritizes room and refinement over flash. With 35.4% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2019 Volkswagen Tiguan reliable?
Owners rate it 4.38/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback also points to a dependable ownership experience for many shoppers, with praise for the Tiguan’s value, comfort, and performance features. That said, some drivers mention long-drive seat comfort, interior noise, and a few missing features, so used buyers should focus on condition and maintenance history. For long-term ownership, the main risk is buying a neglected example rather than the model itself.
What should I look for when buying a used 2019 Volkswagen Tiguan?
At 66.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should run a vehicle history report before you commit, especially if the listing price looks unusually attractive. Put inspection priority on body condition, signs of prior repair, and how well the cabin and electronics have held up. Because this model is often chosen for space and comfort, make sure the seats, noise levels, and overall interior condition meet your expectations on a test drive.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2019 Volkswagen Tiguan?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.
- Deal availability: 35.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 2,300 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 10.57% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 66.3% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $14,063, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2019 Volkswagen Tiguan's resale value?
The current average of $14,085 sits slightly below last year's $15,750.
That price decline suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can make future depreciation feel less steep if you buy at the right price. For a future seller, the key is entering ownership at a competitive number so you have less ground to lose. Strong demand for practical, well-equipped compact SUVs can help, but condition and mileage will matter a lot when you resell.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.38/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2019 Volkswagen Tiguan or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2019 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2019 if:
- 35.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 66.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 10.57% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.38/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2018 if:
- At $12,345, the 2018 costs less than the current year's $14,085 average.
- It emphasizes practicality, cargo space, and everyday usefulness.
Consider the 2020 if:
- At $15,597, the 2020 costs more than the current year's $14,085 average.
- It offers a roomier feel with broader trim choices.
The bottom line: The 2019 is the best fit if you want a well-liked, value-oriented Tiguan with strong owner satisfaction and decent deal availability. If your priority is saving money, the 2018 is the better secondary path; if you want to spend more for a roomier, newer-feeling alternative, the 2020 is worth a look.
