Why it stands out
The 2019 Toyota Prius stands out as a practical hybrid that covers a lot of the basics well. It is described as reliable, efficient, affordable, practical, and safe, and it is also noted as decent to drive. That combination makes it appealing to shoppers who want a car that is easy to live with and strong on value, especially since fuel efficiency is one of its clear strengths.
Toyota also made several changes for 2019, including toning down the design, revising the trim-level strategy, and adding a new electric all-wheel-drive option. Those updates give the Prius a broader appeal than just its efficiency alone. At the same time, its styling remains a drawback, and the technology is described as outdated, so the Prius still asks buyers to accept some compromises in exchange for its everyday usefulness and gas-saving ability.

The 2019 Prius is an excellent car. Great mileage and a very comfortable ride. In our Prius XLE, we get about 52 mpg. We have been driving the Toyota Prius brand for over 5 years. Great choice. Lots of features but the sound system is excellent and we can run Youtube and Spotify through the car as well as all phone calls.

Great mileage and surprisingly has power and acceleration if Normal or Power mode is selected. The Eco mode sustains well and for cruising on highway or city is sufficient! Very Happy

How much does the 2019 Toyota Prius cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $19,511 |
| Year-Round Low | $17,990.41 |
| Year-Round High | $19,524.93 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $19,279 |
| Change vs. Last Year | +1.20% |
Prices are up 1.20% year-over-year — a sign of continued demand for this model year.
There are 284 listings available, which gives you a modest amount of shopping room without making the market feel crowded.
If you find a listing below $17,990.41, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2019 Toyota Prius a good car?
Yes — the 2019 Toyota Prius earns a 5/5 user rating and a 7.33/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Cost effectiveness at 10/10.
Owners consistently praise its impressive fuel economy, quiet interior, and helpful features. They also highlight its reliability and comfort for daily driving, which fits a car meant to be easy to live with. The main trade-offs are its potentially polarizing design and outdated technology, even though the car is still described as practical and safe.
That makes the Prius a strong fit if you want a value-focused hybrid that handles commuting and everyday errands with minimal fuss. With 25.0% of listings marked as good or great deals, there are still opportunities to find one at a competitive price.
Is the 2019 Toyota Prius reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to reliability, trouble-free ownership, and confidence in the car over the long haul. The expert evaluation also describes it as historically reliable and trouble-free, which reinforces the idea that this is a hybrid you can count on for everyday use. The cost-effectiveness commentary adds that Prius ownership makes logical and financial sense, which matters if you plan to keep the car for years.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about the Prius’s core durability and more about condition, maintenance history, and how well the hybrid system has been cared for.
What should I look for when buying a used 2019 Toyota Prius?
At 59.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has been in any collision. Focus on body condition, repair quality, and whether the hybrid system, brakes, and electronics behave as expected during a test drive. Because this model is often bought for efficiency and daily use, you should also pay close attention to signs of wear that could affect long-term ownership costs.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The lineup ranges from L Eco to Limited, and the base setup is the most stripped-down. Higher trims add more convenience and tech, while the Limited brings the most upscale equipment.
- Powertrain: A 1.8-liter 4-cylinder engine works with an electric motor for 121 horsepower. The optional electric AWD system adds a rear motor for extra traction, but it also reduces fuel economy.
- Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense is standard and includes adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, and automatic high-beam headlights. LE trim adds blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and parking sensors with parking assist.
- Infotainment: The standard system uses a 6.1-inch touchscreen with Bluetooth and a CD player. The Limited trim gets an 11.6-inch split-screen display with navigation, Entune App Suite, a JBL sound system, satellite radio, and Safety Connect. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are not included.
- Fuel efficiency: A standard front-drive Prius gets 52 mpg combined, or 56 mpg in L Eco trim. The AWD-e version gets 50 mpg combined.
Which 2019 Toyota Prius trim should I buy?
The 2019 Toyota Prius is offered in 4 trim levels: L Eco, LE, XLE, and Limited.
Here's the short version:
- L Eco: This is the efficiency-first choice, and it makes the most sense if your priority is maximizing fuel economy above all else.
- LE: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds useful safety upgrades like blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and parking sensors without jumping to the pricier upper trims.
- XLE: This trim is the better pick if you want a more comfortable and better-equipped Prius, especially with available AWD-e and the added convenience features shown in the test vehicle.
- Limited: This is the most feature-rich version, with the largest infotainment screen, navigation, JBL audio, and Safety Connect, so it suits you if you want the most upscale Prius experience.
Toyota Safety Sense is standard on every trim, while LE and above add extra driver-assistance features.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2019 Toyota Prius?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer's market, so you should shop carefully and compare listings.
- Deal availability: 25.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 284 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices are up 1.20% year-over-year.
- Clean inventory: 59.5% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $17,990.41, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2019 Toyota Prius's resale value?
The current average of $19,511 sits slightly above last year's $19,279.
That modest increase suggests the Prius has held value reasonably well, which is what you want if you're thinking about future resale. A rising price trend can support seller confidence, especially when demand remains steady for a fuel-efficient hybrid with a strong reputation. The market also appears to reward the model's value proposition, which can help keep buyer interest healthy over time.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2019 Toyota Prius safe?
The Prius earns a five-star overall rating from NHTSA, with four-star front passenger protection in frontal-impact crash testing. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gives it a Top Safety Pick rating, with small overlap front passenger frontal impact protection rated as Acceptable instead of Good.
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
Toyota Safety Sense is standard on every Prius and includes adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, and automatic high-beam headlights. LE trim adds blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and parking sensors with parking assist, while Limited also gets Safety Connect services. The main caveat is the IIHS small-overlap front passenger result, which is weaker than the rest of the safety picture.
Should I buy a 2019 Toyota Prius or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2019 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2019 if:
- 25.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 59.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices are up 1.20% year-over-year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- Toyota added a new electric AWD option and revised the trim strategy for broader appeal.
Consider the 2020 if:
- At $21,668, the 2020 costs more than the current year's $19,511 average.
- It adds broader hybrid appeal with more versatility and technology.
The bottom line: The 2019 is the better value if you want a proven hybrid with strong efficiency, solid safety, and a lower average price. If you can spend more and want the next year’s broader feature appeal, the 2020 is worth a look, but price-sensitive buyers should focus on the 2019’s stronger value proposition.
