CarGurus Analysis: 2019 Tesla Model S

Summary
With 313 currently listed for sale and an average price of $28,852, 34.8% of 2019 Tesla Model S listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2019 Tesla Model S 4.67 / 5 stars.

Why it stands out
The 2019 Tesla Model S stands out as a highly advanced electric sedan that helped define the modern EV era. By this year, the Model S had been simplified to standard all-wheel drive and two battery pack options, 75- and 100-kWh, while Tesla also limited free supercharging to 400 kWh per year. It was also equipped with the “Full Self-Driving Computer,” laying the groundwork for the FSD Beta released in 2020. For shoppers, that combination of long-range capability, strong technology, and quick charging support is a big part of the appeal.
This model year also benefited from the broader Model S formula that made the car distinctive from the start: a minimalist cabin, a large 17-inch infotainment touchscreen, and generous interior space. The 2019 Model S is described as having better fit and finish and fewer software glitches than earlier versions, which makes it especially attractive as a used buy. Standard Autopilot adds to the car’s tech-forward character, and the Model S remains notable for its sports car-style acceleration and impressive range.
There are still tradeoffs to consider. The Model S does not offer Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, and some owners have criticized build quality. Charging time is also a common complaint, and the price can feel high relative to perceived quality. Even so, the 2019 Tesla Model S remains distinctive for buyers who want a spacious, fast, and software-driven luxury EV with a strong technology story.

By far the best vehicle I have ever owned, but what makes it special is that it gets better overtime with (free) software updates that improve or add new features. Tons of room, and fits all 3 car seats across the back row. I mostly let it drive me around but it's a great feeling to know that when I'm in the mood to get sucked into my seat, I just have to floor it and hold on. I've never let up without a huge grin on my face. My monthly gas budget was $250, and my utility bill increased by around $50, so it saves me $200 a month.

Personally I think Teslas in general are to expensive for what you get. The quality isnt there for the price you pay.

Amazing car with outstanding performance, range, technology, and most importantly phenomenal and efficient customer service from Tesla. The performance on the “Performance” version (previously known as the “P100D) is unbelievably beyond any internal combustion engine vehicle I’ve ever driven (and I’ve driven most all high-line, super and track cars in production); however, that is not to minimize the performance on the “Long Range” version, which is incredibly fast in its own right, along with having an outstanding >400 Mile range per full charge. There’s not enough time or space to write the praises of this vehicle and I completely understand and appreciate how Tesla has become the most valuable car company (one of the top overall also!), making their maverick, peculiar, and idiosyncratic CEO Musk the richest man on the planet. Before concluding this review I want to alsomention that the constant OTA updates which Tesla consistently pushes to it’s cars, containing this such as improvements to existing software, performance, battery, handling, NEW features, apps, and technology (to make just a few) is very cool and feels like you are getting a new car upgrade every month or so. It’s no surprise that more and more car manufacturers are starting to do the same and plan to emulate Tapas even more in the near future. Lastly, I want to mention the “Autopilot” features you get, besides being very cool, are outstanding and combat driver’s fatigue vey well (mostly for Highway driving, but also some suburban driving). And I say autopilot, because “FSD” (full self driving) is sill in early beta testing and hasn’t been publicly released, whereas autopilot, which is also technically still in beta (but more refined and closer to the final product than FSD) has been released to everyone who purchased a Tesla with it. I happen to be one of the lucky beta testers for FSD, so let me also say that even in its relatively infant stage FSD is phenomenal, but definitely not ready for prime time yet; however, the bi-weekly updates to it have gone from incremental improvements to each version to now having exponential improvement with each new update (likely because of Tesla’s expansion of testers recently). I can confidently say that very soon FSD will do for suburban driving, what autopilot has done for highway driving, which is talking the “chore,” fatigue, boredom, and all negative aspects out of driving and freeing up the driver to scan everything around him/her more freely, comfortably, and confidently (analogous to what the original “Autopilot” did and continues to still do in aviation for airplane pilots). The safety ratings for the Tesla model S and really all the models, speaks for itself. And I would really like to caution prospective buyers researching their next car to stay away from reviews and “articles” on social media and you tube, because they are actually paid advertising for competitors, instead use reputable, and established channels to get your info, including, but not limited to official government sites, sites like this, TrueCar, car and driver, university channels, and if you must, even from some reputable social media influencers (the ones known to stay impartial regardless of whom sponsors their content). In conclusion (to make a long story, LONGER! ;>), this car is a 10 out of 10 in my humble advice and is an investment in your life, and not to mention the planet. So best of luck with your next car purchase, and remember to be patient and take your time. It’s healthier to re-think something a dozen times, to you content, before doing it, than to question your decision forever, because you didn’t think about it enough before doing it.

What should I look for when buying a used 2019 Tesla Model S?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 77.1% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should start with a history report so you can confirm accident status and spot any red flags before you get too far into the process. After that, prioritize a thorough inspection of the charging system, software behavior, and overall condition, since charging time and build quality are recurring concerns. It also helps to focus on how the car presents in person, because fit, finish, and prior use can matter a lot on a used EV like this.

The current average of $28,895 sits slightly above last year's $28,636.
That small increase suggests the market has stayed relatively stable, which is helpful if you plan to sell later. A steady price trend can support resale confidence because it shows buyers are still willing to pay around current levels for a well-kept example. The model’s strong owner satisfaction also helps keep demand healthy among used EV shoppers.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.7/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2019 Tesla Model S or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2019 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2019 if:
- 32.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 77.1% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.7/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: The 2019 is a strong choice if you want a used Model S with solid owner satisfaction, stable pricing, and a decent pool of listings to compare. If you’re more price-sensitive, you may want to look at nearby years and compare condition closely, since the best value often comes down to finding the cleanest example at the lowest price rather than choosing by model year alone.
