Why it stands out
The 2019 Mazda CX-5 stands out for blending style, safety, and driving enjoyment in a way that helped it win over buyers year after year. Mazda updated it just one year into its second generation, and the changes focused on the qualities that matter most to many shoppers: improved handling through an updated version of its G-Vectoring Control system, added smartphone connectivity with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and more power from a turbocharged engine in two new top-tier trims, the Grand Touring Reserve and Signature.
That combination makes the 2019 CX-5 appealing if you want a compact SUV that feels more polished than basic transportation. Its standard advanced safety features and strong value add to the appeal, while the stylish design and luxury-like interior impression are recurring strengths. The tradeoffs are worth noting, though: the base engine is described as underwhelming, and the technology can be unintuitive. Some owners also wished for higher-end touches such as a panoramic sunroof and more flexible rear-seat packaging.

This is a great car! Has android and Apple car play. Sirius XM ready. Grand Touring has all the creature comforts. Curve adaptive headlights improve nighttime driving visibility. Seats are ergonomic. Very good on gas! Decently powerful for a 4 cylinder. Comfortable seats. AWD models have great traction in wet. Havent driven in snow with it yet, but will be soon.

How much does the 2019 Mazda CX-5 cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $19,016 |
| Year-Round Low | $18,195 |
| Year-Round High | $19,465 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $19,464 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −2.31% |
Prices have softened 2.31% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 1,975 listings available, which suggests you should have a workable selection to compare.
Is the 2019 Mazda CX-5 a good car?
Yes — the 2019 Mazda CX-5 earns a 4.83/5 user rating and an 8.33/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Look and feel, Cost effectiveness, and Safety.
Owners consistently praise its stylish design, luxury-like interior feel, great handling, and impressive fuel efficiency. They also value the safety features and overall sense of quality, while some note the lack of higher-end features like a panoramic sunroof and the fixed rear-seat setup.
That lines up with the CX-5’s appeal as a compact SUV that feels more polished than basic transportation, especially if you want something that blends everyday usefulness with a more premium vibe. The main trade-offs are the underwhelming base engine and unintuitive technology.
With 33.1% of listings priced as good or great deals, there is still room to shop selectively.
Is the 2019 Mazda CX-5 reliable?
Owners rate it 4.83/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a dependable, trouble-free ownership experience, with praise for the CX-5’s value, safety features, and overall quality. Reviewers also describe it as a vehicle you can count on for long-term satisfaction, especially if you value a refined feel and strong fuel efficiency.
The expert evaluation reinforces that impression by highlighting the CX-5’s solid build quality, strong value, and well-rounded driving character. If you’re buying used, the biggest long-term ownership risk is choosing a neglected example with unresolved wear or a history of prior damage.
What should I look for when buying a used 2019 Mazda CX-5?
At 65.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection. Focus on signs of prior bodywork, uneven panel gaps, tire wear, and any evidence that the vehicle’s safety systems or electronics were repaired after a collision.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base Sport trim includes LED headlights, push-button ignition, a 7-inch touchscreen, and a strong safety suite, while the Touring adds keyless entry, a power driver’s seat, dual-zone automatic climate control, rear climate vents, heated front seats, two more USB ports, and an upgraded stereo. The Grand Touring adds adaptive headlights, LED fog lights, leather upholstery, an upgraded driver display, and navigation, while the Grand Touring Reserve and Signature bring the turbocharged engine and more luxury-oriented equipment.
- Powertrain: The standard setup uses a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder with a 6-speed automatic and 187 horsepower, while the Grand Touring Reserve and Signature add a turbocharged version with up to 250 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque.
- Safety package: Mazda’s i-ActiveSense suite is standard across the range and includes automatic headlights, wipers, and high beams; lane-departure warning and assist; adaptive cruise control; and forward-collision warning and mitigation. The 360-degree camera and parking sensors are reserved for the Signature.
- Infotainment: The CX-5 uses MazdaConnect with a 7-inch touchscreen, and Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are standard above the base Sport trim. The system is responsive, though the scroll-wheel interface may not suit everyone.
- Fuel efficiency: The base engine is EPA-estimated at 25 mpg city, 31 highway, and 28 combined, while the turbocharged setup is rated at 22 mpg city, 27 highway, and 24 combined.
Which 2019 Mazda CX-5 trim should I buy?
The 2019 Mazda CX-5 is offered in 5 trim levels: Sport, Touring, Grand Touring, Grand Touring Reserve, and Signature.
Here's the short version:
- Sport: This is the entry point, and it already gives you LED headlights, push-button ignition, a 7-inch touchscreen, and the full standard safety suite. It makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the CX-5, but the lack of Android Auto and Apple CarPlay makes it the least appealing value pick.
- Touring: This trim adds the features many shoppers will actually feel day to day, including keyless entry, a power driver’s seat, dual-zone automatic climate control, rear climate vents, heated front seats, two extra USB ports, and an upgraded stereo. It’s the best-value choice for most buyers.
- Grand Touring: This one layers on adaptive headlights, LED fog lights, leather upholstery, an upgraded driver display, and navigation. Choose it if you want a more upscale cabin without jumping all the way to the turbo models.
- Grand Touring Reserve: This is the first trim with the turbocharged engine, plus a head-up display, power-folding mirrors, heated and ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, a heated steering wheel, and a windshield wiper de-icer. It suits you if you want more power and cold-weather comfort.
- Signature: This top trim adds ambient cabin lighting, upgraded leather upholstery, real wood trim, a 360-degree camera, and parking sensors front and rear. It’s the most luxurious version, but it’s best if you specifically want the highest-end features.
The safety suite is standard across the lineup, while the 360-degree camera and parking sensors are limited to the Signature.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2019 Mazda CX-5?
This is a moderate market, so you can shop selectively without expecting a deep bargain on every listing.
- Deal availability: 33.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,975 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.31% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 65.7% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $18,195, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2019 Mazda CX-5's resale value?
The current average of $19,016 sits slightly below last year's $19,464.
That kind of softening suggests the market has become a little more buyer-friendly, which can work against you if you plan to sell soon. If you buy at the right price and keep the vehicle in strong condition, you may be able to limit depreciation pressure.
The CX-5’s strong reputation for satisfaction and desirability should help support demand when it’s time to resell. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.83/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2019 Mazda CX-5 safe?
The 2019 Mazda CX-5 earns five-star ratings in nearly every NHTSA category, with a four-star rating in rollover. It also earns Top Safety Pick recognition from IIHS, with top marks in every category except child safety anchors, which were rated Acceptable.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Mazda’s i-ActiveSense safety suite is standard across the range and includes automatic headlights, wipers, and high beams; lane-departure warning and assist; adaptive cruise control; and forward-collision warning and mitigation. The 360-degree camera and parking sensors are limited to the Signature trim.
The main caveat is the rollover result, which is a weaker point compared with the CX-5’s otherwise strong crash-test performance.
Should I buy a 2019 Mazda CX-5 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2019 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2019 if:
- 33.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 65.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.31% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.83/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- Mazda added Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and a turbocharged engine to improve the CX-5’s appeal.
Consider the 2018 if:
- At $16,746, the 2018 costs less than the current year's $19,016 average.
- It emphasizes style, sophistication, and engaging driving feel.
Consider the 2020 if:
- At $20,279, the 2020 costs more than the current year's $19,016 average.
- It leans further into premium materials and a more upscale cabin.
The bottom line: The 2019 is the right pick if you want the strongest mix of value, safety, and updated tech in this generation. If you’re price-sensitive, the 2018 can save you money, but the 2019’s added connectivity and broader appeal make it the better all-around buy for most shoppers.
