CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Mazda CX-5
overall

Summary
With 151 currently listed for sale near Chicago, IL and an average price of $16,552, 28.5% of 2017 Mazda CX-5s for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Mazda CX-5 4.7 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.33 / 10.
94.7% of 2017 CX-5 models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2017 Mazda CX-5 stands out by aiming for a sporty, upscale feel rather than trying to appeal to every compact crossover shopper. In a crowded segment with very different personalities, it is presented as the fun-to-drive choice that also feels uniquely refined for its class. That combination makes it appealing to buyers who want a commuter with more space but do not want something bland or purely utilitarian.
Its strengths are clear in the way it balances driving enjoyment with a more premium character. The CX-5 is described as not only fun to drive, but also uniquely upscale in the segment, which gives it a distinct identity among mainstream crossovers. Owners also praise its stylish design, smooth ride, comfortable handling, and fuel economy, especially on long trips.
There are tradeoffs, though. Some drivers wished for more power and cargo space, which suggests the CX-5’s appeal is strongest for shoppers who value personality and refinement over maximum practicality.

I bought this car to replace the same model that I lost in an accident. It was a year older and a lower trim. This trim is the premium trim and it’s nice. It has a heads up display full of seats. The steering wheel warms up memory seats and it runs like a dream. I really enjoy driving this car..

I bought the sport, base model, and for being a base model the features are pretty good. The only thing I wish I had, was rear vents for the AC.

Is the 2017 Mazda CX-5 a good car?
Yes — the 2017 Mazda CX-5 earns a 4.7/5 user rating, and its expert rating is 7.33/10. The model scores 9/10 across Look and feel and Safety.
Owners consistently praise its stylish design, smooth ride, comfortable handling, and fuel economy, especially on long trips. The overview also frames it as a sporty, upscale compact crossover that works well if you want a commuter with more space without giving up refinement. That makes it a strong fit if you value personality and a more premium feel over maximum utility.
Good and great deals account for 33.4% of listings, so there are still worthwhile opportunities in the market.
Is the 2017 Mazda CX-5 reliable?
Owners rate it 4.7/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner summary points to excellent reliability, and it also highlights the CX-5 as a vehicle many owners feel good about keeping for the long haul. The expert driving notes reinforce that dependable impression by describing strong everyday performance and a well-sorted driving experience. If you’re buying used, the main ownership risk is making sure the specific example you choose has been maintained well and hasn’t been worn down by prior use.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Mazda CX-5?
At 60.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing price looks unusually attractive. Focus on body condition, signs of prior repair, and whether the vehicle’s equipment and wear match the mileage and asking price. Because this model is positioned as a more refined compact crossover, condition matters a lot when you’re comparing examples.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The Sport trim comes with 17-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights, power side mirrors, a reversing camera, keyless entry, push-button start, dual USB ports, MazdaConnect infotainment, and Bluetooth hands-free calling. Touring adds leatherette seating, auto-leveling headlights, heated front seats, dual-zone climate control, rear USB ports, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, rear climate control vents, and Mazda Advanced Keyless Entry. Grand Touring adds 19-inch aluminum-alloy wheels, adaptive headlights, LED fog lights, heated side mirrors, rain-sensing wipers, a power moonroof, a power rear liftgate, full leather seating, an 8-way power driver’s seat with lumbar support, navigation, auto-dimming mirrors, SiriusXM satellite radio, and a 10-speaker Bose premium stereo. The Touring is the best-value trim if you want the biggest step up in comfort and convenience.
- Powertrain: Every trim uses a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine with 187 horsepower and 185 lb-ft of torque, paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission with manual shift mode. Front-wheel drive is standard, and all-wheel drive is available. The CX-5 is tuned to feel responsive and eager to downshift, with strong acceleration and especially good cornering behavior.
- Safety package: Standard equipment includes front- and side-impact airbags, a tire pressure monitoring system, and Smart City Brake Support. Touring adds blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert. Grand Touring adds adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning, and automatic emergency braking. The higher trim brings the most complete driver-assistance setup.
- Infotainment: MazdaConnect uses a 7-inch screen controlled by a rotary dial, though it becomes a touchscreen when the vehicle is in Park. The system does not offer Android Auto or Apple CarPlay. Grand Touring also adds navigation, and the available head-up display can be cluttered.
- Fuel efficiency: The FWD model returns 24 mpg city, 31 highway, and 27 combined, while AWD versions return 23 city, 30 highway, and 26 combined. An AWD test car averaged 26.3 mpg.
Which 2017 Mazda CX-5 trim should I buy?
The 2017 Mazda CX-5 is offered in 3 trim levels: Sport, Touring, and Grand Touring.
Here's the short version:
- Sport: This is the entry point, and it gives you the core CX-5 experience with the standard safety and convenience basics. It makes sense if you want the lowest starting price and are comfortable skipping the extra comfort and driver-assistance features found higher up.
- Touring: This is the best-value trim because it adds the most meaningful everyday upgrades, including heated front seats, dual-zone climate control, leatherette seating, rear USB ports, and more convenience features. If you want the sweet spot between price and equipment, this is the one to target.
- Grand Touring: This is the right pick if you want the most upscale CX-5 experience, with leather seating, a power moonroof, a power liftgate, navigation, and the Bose audio system. It also brings the most advanced safety and driver-assistance content.

- Inventory: There are 1,769 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.84% compared with last year.

What is the 2017 Mazda CX-5's resale value?
The current average of $16,052 sits slightly below last year's $16,520.
That price movement suggests the CX-5 has softened a bit, which can help you as a buyer today but may temper short-term gains if you plan to resell soon. Even so, the model’s strong owner satisfaction and upscale reputation can help support demand when it’s time to sell. Well-kept examples should remain appealing to shoppers who want a refined compact crossover without moving into luxury-brand pricing.

Should I buy a 2017 Mazda CX-5 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 33.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 60.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.84% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.7/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2017 stands out for its sporty, upscale character and strong driving dynamics.
Consider the 2018 if:
- At $16,760, the 2018 costs more than the current year's $16,052 average.
- It moves the CX-5 further toward premium territory.
The bottom line: If you want the better value today, the 2017 is the smarter buy because it combines strong owner satisfaction, a softer price trend, and plenty of listings to compare. If you’re willing to spend more for a newer example and a more premium-leaning presentation, the 2018 is the better path.
