Why it stands out
The 2019 GMC Sierra 1500 stands out as a completely redesigned full-size pickup that was meant to take on other half-ton trucks more directly. GMC describes it as bigger, more capable, and more useful than before, and says it was improved in every way. So far so good. The ford's have a much nicer dash set up in these yrs but the truck has lots of options and the tech seems ok. The paint on the front grill chips super easy but I like the truck

Owners consistently praise its stylish design, comfort, luxurious feel, great features, and solid performance. The overview also points to a truck that fits daily driving as well as work duties, so you get a more upscale, versatile full-size pickup rather than a stripped-down hauler. With 30.1% of listings marked as good or great deals, the market gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2019 GMC Sierra 1500 reliable?
Owners rate it 4.41/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback highlights a dependable-feeling truck with solid performance and a luxurious, comfortable character that many owners seem happy to live with over time. The expert review also describes the Sierra as bigger, more capable, and more useful than before, with a redesigned platform and a transmission that performed well in testing. GMC also includes a first scheduled maintenance visit on the house through its connected-services trial language, which helps early ownership costs a bit.
The main used-buyer risk is that some owners mention transmission concerns, so a careful test drive and service-history review matter.
What should I look for when buying a used 2019 GMC Sierra 1500?
At 71.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle-history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the truck has higher mileage or signs of heavy use. Focus on body condition, panel alignment, tire wear, brake feel, and any evidence of towing or hard work. If you’re comparing multiple listings, put the cleanest history and best maintenance record at the top of your list.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: Base, SLE, SLT, Elevation, AT4, and Denali are the named trims, and the base truck is the most stripped-down starting point. The cabin is described as useful but visually busy, while Denali adds premium leather, open-pore wood trim, and real aluminum accents for a more upscale feel.
- Powertrain: The Sierra offers six drivetrains, including a 6.2-liter V8 with 420 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque in the test truck. GMC also uses Dynamic Fuel Management and a 10-speed automatic, and the truck is rated to tow up to 12,200 pounds and carry 2,240 pounds of payload.
- Safety package: Driver Alert Package 1 adds blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and front and rear parking sensors. Driver Alert Package 2 adds forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, low-speed automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist, and automatic high-beam headlights, but adaptive cruise control, full-speed-range automatic braking, and lane-centering assist are not included.
- Infotainment: All Sierras include Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, GMC Connected Services through OnStar, and a 4G LTE WiFi hotspot. The test truck also had an 8-inch touchscreen, navigation, a Bose premium sound system, and a head-up display.
- Fuel efficiency: The test truck is estimated at 17 mpg combined, and the review notes about 15.4 mpg on a test loop and 16.3 mpg after a week of driving.
Which 2019 GMC Sierra 1500 trim should I buy?
The 2019 GMC Sierra 1500 is offered in 6 trim levels: Base, SLE, SLT, Elevation, AT4, and Denali.
Here's the short version:
- Base: This is the entry point, so it makes the most sense if you want the Sierra’s core capability at the lowest starting price. It is the least lavish choice, and the review makes clear that the cabin’s useful controls and broad capability are part of the truck’s appeal even before you move up.
- SLE: This is the first step up for shoppers who want a more balanced everyday truck without jumping into luxury pricing. It builds on the base formula and is a sensible place to shop if you want more content without chasing the highest trims.
- SLT: This is the best-value trim for many buyers because it sits in the middle of the lineup and unlocks more of the Sierra’s upscale and tech-forward character. It also serves as the foundation for the AT4, which means it’s the gateway to more specialized versions.
- Elevation: This trim is for you if you want a customized look and a more distinctive appearance than the mainstream trims provide. It is described as building on the SLE trim with a customized look.
- AT4: This is the off-roading model, and it is the right pick if you want a more adventurous version of the Sierra without moving into Denali luxury territory. The review specifically identifies it as an SLT-based off-roading model.
- Denali: This is the luxury choice, with premium leather, open-pore wood trim, and real aluminum accents. If you want the most upscale Sierra experience, this is the trim that best matches that goal.
Driver Alert Package 1 is available across the lineup, while Driver Alert Package 2 is offered on the SLT, AT4, and Denali.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2019 GMC Sierra 1500?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you compare listings carefully.
- Deal availability: 30.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 4,819 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 9.70% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 71.2% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $31,220, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2019 GMC Sierra 1500's resale value?
The current average of $31,220 sits slightly below last year's $34,574.
That decline suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable entry point today. For a future seller, it also means resale value may depend more heavily on condition, mileage, and equipment than on broad market momentum alone. Clean history and desirable trims should matter more when it’s time to trade or sell.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.41/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2019 GMC Sierra 1500 safe?
The 2019 GMC Sierra 1500 has not been rated by either the federal government or IIHS in the review material available here.
It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.
Every version can be fitted with Driver Alert Package 1, which includes blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and front and rear parking sensors. Driver Alert Package 2, available on the SLT, AT4, and Denali, adds forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, low-speed automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist, and automatic high-beam headlights. The review also notes that adaptive cruise control, full-speed-range automatic braking, and lane-centering assist are not included.
Should I buy a 2019 GMC Sierra 1500 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2019 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2019 if:
- 30.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 71.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 9.70% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.41/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- The 2019 is a completely redesigned full-size pickup with a more capable, more useful, and more modern feel.
Consider the 2018 if:
- At $26,193, the 2018 costs less than the current year's $31,220 average.
- It adds more standard content and makes the reversing camera and infotainment standard.
Consider the 2020 if:
- At $33,434, the 2020 costs more than the current year's $31,220 average.
- It blends pickup utility with SUV-like comfort and broader everyday appeal.
The bottom line: If you want the redesigned truck and a strong mix of features, the 2019 is the primary path to consider. If your budget is tighter, the 2018 is the value play, while the 2020 makes sense if you want to spend more for a slightly more refined everyday-truck feel.
