There are 1,787 listings available, which gives you a solid amount of inventory to compare.

Is the 2019 BMW X5 a good car?

Yes — the 2019 BMW X5 earns a 4.6/5 user rating, and our experts give it 7.8/10. The standout strength is Performance at 9/10.

Owners consistently praise its strong performance, comfort, sleek design, advanced technology, and luxury features. In practical terms, that lines up well with the X5’s role as a roomy midsize crossover that still aims to deliver car-like handling and a modern, upscale cabin. The market also shows 36.7% good or great deals, which suggests you can find appealing examples if you shop carefully.

Is the 2019 BMW X5 reliable?

Owners rate it 4.6/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

User feedback points to a generally positive ownership experience, with praise for the X5’s comfort, luxury feel, and strong performance. The same feedback also flags electrical issues and a limited back seat, which are the kinds of concerns you should take seriously when evaluating a used luxury SUV. The expert review also describes the drivetrain as smooth and well-sorted, with the transmission operating cleanly and the engine delivering consistent power.

For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that luxury features and electronics can be costly to sort out if prior owners skipped maintenance or if a specific vehicle has unresolved issues.

What should I look for when buying a used 2019 BMW X5?

At 72.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing has any accident or repair history. Focus on body condition, panel alignment, tire wear, brake feel, and whether the electronics and driver-assistance features work as expected. Because this is a luxury SUV with advanced tech, it’s worth paying extra attention to signs of deferred maintenance or inconsistent repairs.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base xDrive40i already includes all-wheel drive, adaptive LED headlights and foglights, a panoramic sunroof, an adaptive suspension, 19-inch alloy wheels, dual-zone automatic climate control, faux-leather upholstery with heated front seats, a power liftgate, ambient lighting, and a digital gauge cluster with a 12.3-inch secondary touchscreen. The M Sport design package adds unique 20-inch wheels, an adaptive M suspension tune, an M steering wheel and aero kit, upgraded leather, four-zone auto climate controls, keyless entry, satellite radio, and roof rails.
• Powertrain: The xDrive40i uses a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline 6-cylinder engine paired with a well-reviewed ZF 8-speed automatic. It delivers consistent power, strong acceleration, and EPA-estimated 20 mpg city, 26 highway, 22 combined.
• Safety package: The standard safety suite includes adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, and blind-spot detection with rear cross-traffic alert. The Driving Assistance Plus package adds limited hands-off driving, lane keeping, lane changes, and Extended Traffic Jam Assistant, but the expert review says it is not very good at speed.
• Infotainment: The X5 uses an updated iDrive interface with a 12.3-inch secondary touchscreen. The system also offers gesture control, but the expert review says the tech is less impressive than the segment’s best.
• Fuel efficiency: The xDrive40i returns EPA-estimated 20 mpg city, 26 highway, 22 combined.

Which 2019 BMW X5 trim should I buy?

The 2019 BMW X5 is offered in 2 trim levels: xDrive40i, xDrive50i.

Here's the short version:

• xDrive40i: This is the best-value choice because it already gives you the core X5 experience: strong turbocharged inline-six power, all-wheel drive, a well-sorted 8-speed automatic, and a long list of standard comfort and safety equipment. If you want the X5 for its driving feel and upscale daily usability, this is the trim to start with.
• xDrive50i: Choose this if you want the V8 and the extra performance that comes with it, along with upgraded multi-contour front seats, real leather upholstery, and a 16-speaker Harman Kardon stereo. It’s the more expensive route, so it makes the most sense if you specifically want more power and a richer standard equipment list.

The standard safety suite is already strong on the xDrive40i, so you do not need to move up a trim just to get a solid baseline of driver assistance.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2019 BMW X5?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, with enough inventory and enough price softness to make comparison shopping worthwhile.

• Deal availability: 36.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,787 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 12.60% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 72.1% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $24,353, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2019 BMW X5's resale value?

The current average of $24,353 sits slightly below last year's $27,863.

That decline suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable entry point today. For a future seller, it also means you should expect resale value to depend heavily on condition, mileage, and equipment rather than on broad market appreciation. Well-kept examples with desirable features and clean history should hold up better than neglected ones.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.6/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2019 BMW X5 safe?

The 2019 BMW X5 earns a four-star overall rating from NHTSA, with four-star ratings in frontal crash and rollover tests and five-star ratings in side crash tests. The IIHS named it a Top Safety Pick+ and awarded top scores in all tests.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

The standard safety suite includes adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, and blind-spot detection with rear cross-traffic alert. The Driving Assistance Plus package adds limited hands-off driving, lane keeping, lane changes, and Extended Traffic Jam Assistant, but the expert review says the high-speed behavior is not very good and can feel unsettling. That makes the standard setup the safer bet for most used buyers.

Should I buy a 2019 BMW X5 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2019 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2019 if:

• 36.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 72.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 12.60% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.6/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2019 X5 is an all-new version with a redesigned interior, updated iDrive, and Level 2 autonomous technology, while still delivering the car-like handling the model is known for.

The bottom line: If you want the newest-feeling version of this generation and you value strong performance, the 2019 is the one to target. If your priority is simply getting into an X5 at the lowest possible price, a nearby year may be worth comparing, but the 2019’s combination of updated design, strong owner satisfaction, and softened pricing makes it a compelling used buy.
