How much does the 2018 Volkswagen Passat cost?

Prices have held steady compared to this time last year, signaling a stable and predictable market for this model year.

There are 675 listings available, which gives you a solid amount of inventory to compare.

Is the 2018 Volkswagen Passat a good car?

Yes — the 2018 Volkswagen Passat earns a 4.7/5 user rating and an 8/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Performance and Cost effectiveness.

You get a roomy interior, comfortable seating, and generous trunk space, plus peppy acceleration and a smooth ride. For a midsize sedan, that makes it a practical choice if you want everyday usefulness with a bit more engagement. The Passat is still described as a competitive option in the midsize segment, even if it is getting a little long in the tooth.

With 34.4% of listings marked as good or great deals, there’s meaningful market availability if you want to shop selectively.

Is the 2018 Volkswagen Passat reliable?

Owners rate it 4.7/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

Owner feedback points to a car that feels dependable in daily use, with praise for its roomy cabin, comfortable seating, and value. The expert notes also emphasize that the Passat remains a competitive midsize sedan, and the upgraded engine and broader trim mix help it feel more capable than before. Volkswagen’s maintenance and ownership value positioning also supports the case for a trouble-free experience if you keep up with routine care.

For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that some examples may show age-related wear or missing features, so condition and service history matter.

What should I look for when buying a used 2018 Volkswagen Passat?

At 54.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a higher-mileage example or one with prior damage. Focus on overall condition, signs of uneven wear, and whether the equipment level matches what you expect for the trim. Because the lineup spans several feature sets, it’s worth confirming the exact options on the car you’re looking at.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base S trim includes automatic headlights, 16-inch alloy wheels, a rear-view camera, power driver’s seat, dual-zone automatic climate control, and a 5-inch touchscreen, but it lacks Car-Net App-Connect. Higher trims add features such as heated side mirrors and seats, a larger touchscreen, keyless ignition and entry, a sunroof, and more upscale interior and convenience equipment.
• Powertrain: The standard engine is a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder with 174 hp and 25 mpg city, 36 highway, and 29 combined. The available 3.6-liter V6 makes 280 hp and returns 19/28/22.
• Safety package: The Driver Assistance package adds blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert and forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking. Adaptive cruise control is not included, and lane-departure warning is limited to the SEL Premium.
• Infotainment: Most trims include Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, while the base S does not. The system uses a 5-inch touchscreen on the base trim and a 6.3-inch touchscreen on the R-Line.
• Fuel efficiency: The 2.0-liter engine is rated at 25 mpg city and 36 highway, while the V6 returns 19 mpg city and 28 highway.

Which 2018 Volkswagen Passat trim should I buy?

The 2018 Volkswagen Passat is offered in 5 trim levels: S, R-Line, SE, SEL Premium, and GT.

Here's the short version:

• S: This is the least expensive way into the Passat, and it gives you the core sedan essentials plus the option to add the Driver Assistance package. It makes sense if you want the lowest entry price and are willing to live without standard App-Connect.
• R-Line: This trim adds heated side mirrors and seats, V-Tex leatherette upholstery, a larger touchscreen, and more aggressive styling. It’s a good step up if you want more comfort and a sportier look without jumping all the way to the top.
• SE: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it keeps the R-Line’s equipment while adding keyless ignition and entry, a sunroof, rear air vents, and adaptive cruise control. It also gives you a more balanced mix of comfort and convenience.
• SEL Premium: This is the most upscale choice, with real leather, power-folding mirrors, a power passenger seat, an automatic parallel parking system, lane-departure warning, and a Fender audio system. Choose it if you want the most features and don’t mind paying more.
• GT: This is the performance-oriented trim, with a V6, sport suspension, better-sounding exhaust, 19-inch wheels, and unique styling touches. It’s the right pick if you want the most engaging Passat.

The safety-package note to keep in mind is that the base S can be equipped with the Driver Assistance package, while lane-departure warning is limited to the SEL Premium.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2018 Volkswagen Passat?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently but still move quickly on the right car.

• Deal availability: 34.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 675 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 54.5% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $11,942, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2018 Volkswagen Passat's resale value?

The current average of $12,250 sits slightly below last year's $12,330.

That small decline suggests the market has been stable rather than volatile, which is helpful if you plan to sell later. A steady price pattern can make it easier to estimate your car’s future value without worrying about sharp swings. If you keep the car in strong condition and maintain it well, you should be able to stay competitive in the used market.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.7/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2018 Volkswagen Passat safe?

The Passat earns a five-star overall rating from NHTSA, but it does not earn a Top Safety Pick title from the IIHS because of Marginal ratings on the passenger side in the small-overlap front crash test and headlight tests.

It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

The available Driver Assistance package adds blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert and forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking. The base S can be equipped with that package, while lane-departure warning is limited to the SEL Premium. The Passat also includes plenty of airbags, including side curtains for front and rear passengers.

Should I buy a 2018 Volkswagen Passat or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2018 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2018 if:

• 34.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 54.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.7/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• Volkswagen added an upgraded 4-cylinder engine and a new GT trim with a V6 and sport suspension.

Consider the 2017 if:

• At $10,493, the 2017 costs less than the current year's $12,250 average.
• It standardizes more safety and connectivity features above the base S.

The bottom line: If you want the stronger engine lineup and the GT trim, the 2018 is the better pick. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2017 is the more budget-friendly route.

How does the 2018 Volkswagen Passat compare to the 2018 Honda Accord?

Our experts score the 2018 Volkswagen Passat 8/10 and the 2018 Honda Accord 8.2/10.

The Passat gives you a lower average used price and a higher share of good or great deals, which makes it the more affordable buy. The Accord counters with stronger fuel economy, more horsepower, and a larger pool of listings. If you want value and a roomy, comfortable sedan, the Passat is compelling; if you want stronger efficiency and broader market choice, the Accord has the edge.
