Overview

It’s now 5 model years since Volkswagen’s midsize sedan arrived in its current form, but the 2015 Passat sees only an engine update and some minor feature shuffles. That kind of change usually means there’s a major update coming up, and there are a few spy shots and scheduled auto-show appearances to support just such an idea, but Volkswagen hasn’t released anything about what might change yet. The next-generation Passat isn’t even officially slated for 2016, but current drivers are in no hurry for any major change.
The composed and stately made-in-Tennessee Passat boasts Americanized elbow room and storage, satisfying power and excellent fuel economy. Some drivers take issue with its lack of USB connectivity anywhere in the lineup (it's offered only with an available Apple-specific hookup or Bluetooth streaming otherwise), while others wonder how attentively the factory put together their particular Passat, given a few squeaks and rattles or excessive wind noise in a few random samples, but this generation is otherwise pretty well complaint-free.
Unless you count the drivers who don’t believe in letting the engine warm up and thus complain about waiting 20 seconds for the available rear-view camera monitor to cue up. Rest assured, if you allow the engine to settle in at 1,000 rpm before putting it in gear—as is best for any car—the rear-view monitor is instantly available after putting it in reverse. And for 2015, that rear-view camera is now available in the Technology package for all trims, from the base S right on up to the Wolfsburg Edition.
That Technology package also now adds 2 speakers for a total of 8 to its touchscreen audio system plus satellite radio in all equipped trims except for the Wolfsburg, which already includes satellite connectivity standard. The SE with Sunroof is now the SE Convenience, minus a sunroof, but the SE with Sunroof + Navigation gains chrome trim, sport seats and fog lights. Last but not least of the equipment shuffle, the SEL Premium adds rain-sensing wipers to its list.
As for that engine update, diesel lovers will appreciate a TDI that is 10 horses more powerful this year for a total of 150 hp and 236 lb-ft of torque—and a couple miles better on the gallon. That means the same 30 mpg city with the 6-speed manual and 31 city with the 6-speed automated manual (DSG), but they’re each at least 1 mpg better on the highway for 30 city mpg/44 highway with the manual or 31/42 with the DSG. But that’s just the estimate—drivers regularly report far better real-world economy. And why not? The TDI boasts the lineup’s beefiest 4-cylinder turbo and Volkswagen gets plenty of practice with diesel powertrains over the pond, especially turbodiesels. The TDI powertrain is arguably V-Dub’s masterwork.
All that said, the 2015 Passat is otherwise just the same as the 2014 Passat. That means the base S, mid-level SE, and top-shelf Wolfsburg should still offer both the outgoing 2.5-liter inline 5-cylinder (I5) good for 170 hp and 177 lb-ft/torque or the incoming 1.8-liter turbocharged I4, pushing out 170 hp and 184 lb-ft/torque. The naturally aspirated 2.5 is not only a bit less powerful, it’s also less fuel efficient, estimated at about 22/31 regardless of transmission. The 1.8T on the other hand fetches a very competitive 24/35, and it’s a little more than a second quicker to 60 mph than the 2.5, arriving in 7.7 seconds to the benchmark. Stepping up from the SE to the SEL or Sport is the only sure-fire way to get that 1.8T, but it is expected to be the default engine in short order.
SE, Sport and SEL buyers desiring a good bit more gusto without the diesel have the option of a 3.6-liter V6 putting out 280 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque with a 6.4-second arrival at 60 mph, but it chews through gas like any other V6, with estimates sitting at 20/28 with its obligatory DSG.

I owned a 15 Passat diesel with a 6 speed manual transmission! It was a great car and I wish I hadn’t done the recall buy back. I would love to have that car back. I currently drive a 17 Passat and also love this car, just missing the manual transmission.

2015 Volkswagen Passat Price Trends
CarGurus tracks the prices of millions of used car listings every year. See how the average price of 2015 Volkswagen Passat prices has changed over time.
See more price trendsHow much does the 2015 Volkswagen Passat cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $8,416 |
| Year-Round Low | $7,989.02 |
| Year-Round High | $8,587.69 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $8,596 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −2.09% |
Prices have softened 2.09% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
With 709 listings available, you have a meaningful amount of inventory to compare before you buy.
If you find a listing below $7,989.02, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2015 Volkswagen Passat a good car?
Yes — the 4.7/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction. Owners commonly praise its comfort, fuel efficiency, and reliability, and many also like the spacious interior and long-distance friendliness. The combination of diesel mileage and roomy cabin makes it appealing if you want a practical sedan for commuting or road trips. With 28.6% of listings marked as good or great deals, you still have room to shop selectively.
Is the 2015 Volkswagen Passat reliable?
Owners rate it 4.7/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback highlights reliability as a strength, with many drivers describing the car as dependable and good for long-term use. At the same time, some owners mention mechanical issues and error codes during test drives, so you should treat condition and maintenance history as important filters. For used buyers, that means the ownership risk is manageable if you choose carefully, but it rises when service records are thin or warning signs are present.
What should I look for when buying a used 2015 Volkswagen Passat?
At 55.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report so you can separate clean examples from cars with prior damage. Then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing is priced aggressively or the seller cannot document maintenance. Focus on overall condition, warning lights, and signs of past repairs, since those details matter more when the market includes a sizable share of accident-affected vehicles.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2015 Volkswagen Passat?
This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently and still find value.
- Deal availability: 28.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 709 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.09% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 55.3% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $7,989.02, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2015 Volkswagen Passat's resale value?
The current average of $8,416 sits slightly below last year's $8,596.
That softer pricing suggests the model has already absorbed some market pressure, which can help future buyers but may limit short-term upside for sellers. If you buy well and keep the car in strong condition, you can improve your odds of holding value better than the average listing. Demand should remain steadier for clean, well-kept examples than for cars with questionable history or visible wear.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.7/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2015 Volkswagen Passat or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2015 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2015 if:
- 28.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 55.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.09% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.7/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2014 if:
- At $7,911, the 2014 costs less than the current year's $8,416 average.
- It emphasizes space and comfort with a practical, value-focused character.
Consider the 2016 if:
- At $9,540, the 2016 costs more than the current year's $8,416 average.
- It rewards buyers who value substance over flash.
The bottom line: The 2015 is the best all-around pick if you want a balanced mix of price, owner satisfaction, and available inventory. If your priority is saving money, the 2014 is the smarter value play. If you want to spend more for a newer alternative, the 2016 is worth a look, but only if its higher price fits your budget.
