CarGurus Analysis: 2018 Volkswagen Passat
overall

Summary
With 680 currently listed for sale and an average price of $12,406, 32.2% of 2018 Volkswagen Passats for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2018 Volkswagen Passat 4.71 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8 / 10.
54.7% of 2018 Passat models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2018 Volkswagen Passat stands out as a midsize sedan that adds some much-needed sportiness to a long-running formula. Volkswagen gave it a more-powerful base engine, and the lineup also gained a new GT trim with a V6 and a sport suspension. That combination makes this Passat more interesting than a purely practical family sedan, while still keeping it competitive in the segment.
It also became more appealing on the safety front, since blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert and a forward-collision warning system with automatic emergency braking could now be added to the base S trim. At the same time, the Passat was described as getting a little long in the tooth, so its appeal is less about cutting-edge freshness and more about offering a familiar sedan with useful updates.
Owners of the 2018 Volkswagen Passat also praised its roomy interior, comfortable seating, and impressive trunk space, along with its value, peppy acceleration, and smooth ride. Some noted the absence of features such as memory seats and a home link system, and a few commented that the steering felt soft.

I have the SE Trim level. Roomy sedan that fits two adults up front and two kids plus a car seat in the back. On top of that it has the pep and acceleration of a sports car. Smooth ride yet fun to drive. The perfect all around combination.

You get a lot of bang for your buck with the VR6 in this surprisingly roomy sedan. The rear seat and trunk room is impressive. Pros - VR6 is powerful and pulls strong in any gear at any speed. It also has a wonderful throaty exhaust note. Put a Borla exhaust on this and you gain about 30 bhp and wow does it sound mean! - LED headlights are wonderful for night time visibility. - Tons of trunk space for a mid-sized sedan. - Handles well through turns with only minimum body roll. - Lots of standard safety features - AEB, Rear cross traffic alert, blind spot monitor, etc. Cons - Soft steering - Skinny tires, need more rubber on the road to use all that horsepower without chirping or spinning when the lead foot is unleashed. -

For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about complexity and more about finding a well-kept example with the features and condition you want.
What should I look for when buying a used 2018 Volkswagen Passat?
At 54.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a higher-mileage or lower-priced example. Focus on condition, equipment, and evidence of prior repairs rather than just the asking price.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base S trim includes automatic headlights, a rear-view camera, dual-zone automatic climate control, and a 5-inch touchscreen, but it lacks VW’s Car-Net App-Connect. Higher trims add features like heated seats, a larger touchscreen, a sunroof, adaptive cruise control, real leather, and a memory seat system.
- Powertrain: The standard engine is a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder with 174 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque, while the available 3.6-liter V6 makes 280 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. The 4-cylinder is rated at 25 mpg city, 36 highway, and 29 combined, and the V6 returns 19/28/22.
- Safety package: Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert and forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking can be added to the base S trim through the Driver Assistance package. The GT comes standard with blind-spot monitoring and forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, while lane-departure warning is limited to the SEL Premium.
- Infotainment: Most trims include Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and the system uses a 5-inch touchscreen on the base S, a 6.3-inch touchscreen on the R-Line, and an upgraded 8-speaker infotainment system with navigation in the Technology Package.
- Fuel efficiency: The base engine is rated at 25 mpg city, 36 highway, and 29 combined, while the V6 returns 19/28/22.
Which 2018 Volkswagen Passat trim should I buy?
The 2018 Volkswagen Passat is offered in 5 trim levels: S, R-Line, SE, SEL Premium, GT.
Here's the short version:
- S: This is the value play if you want the lowest entry price and can live without standard App-Connect. It still gives you the core Passat basics, and the available Driver Assistance package makes it much easier to recommend.
- R-Line: This trim adds heated seats and mirrors, V-Tex leatherette, a larger touchscreen, and more aggressive styling, making it a good step up if you want more comfort and presence without jumping too far in price.
- SE: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it keeps the R-Line’s equipment while adding keyless ignition and entry, a sunroof, rear air vents, and adaptive cruise control.
- SEL Premium: Choose this if you want the most upscale Passat experience, with real leather, a Fender stereo, memory seating, and available V6 power.
- GT: This is the enthusiast choice, with the V6, sport suspension, better-sounding exhaust, and unique styling touches that make the Passat feel more distinctive.
The safety package is a strong reason to consider trims or packages that include driver assistance features, especially if you’re shopping the base S.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2018 Volkswagen Passat?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently but still move quickly on the right car.
- Deal availability: 31.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 681 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.24% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 54.5% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $11,941, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2018 Volkswagen Passat's resale value?
The current average of $12,410 sits slightly below last year's $12,825.
That kind of price movement suggests the market has softened a bit, which can help you as a buyer but may temper short-term resale gains if you plan to sell soon. If you buy at the right price and keep the car in strong condition, you’ll be better positioned to limit depreciation pressure.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.71/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2018 Volkswagen Passat safe?
The 2018 Volkswagen Passat earns a five-star overall rating from NHTSA, but Marginal ratings on the passenger side in the small-overlap front crash test and headlight tests keep it from earning a Top Safety Pick title from the IIHS.
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
The Passat includes plenty of airbags, including side curtains for front and rear passengers. Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert and forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking can be added to the base S trim through the Driver Assistance package, and those systems come standard on the GT. Lane-departure warning is limited to the SEL Premium.
For used shoppers, the key takeaway is that the Passat offers useful active-safety tech, but you should pay close attention to trim level and equipment because some of the best features are not standard on every version.
Should I buy a 2018 Volkswagen Passat or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2018 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2018 if:
- 31.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 54.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.24% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.71/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- Expert testing highlights the upgraded base engine, the new GT trim, and added safety tech for the base S.
Consider the 2017 if:
- At $10,612, the 2017 costs less than the current year's $12,410 average.
- It emphasizes comfort, value, and a spacious interior.
The bottom line: If you want the better-equipped and more interesting Passat, the 2018 is the stronger pick. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2017 is the smarter budget alternative, especially if you’re focused on comfort and value rather than the newer engine and trim updates.
