How much does the 2018 Volkswagen Passat cost?

There are 698 listings available, which gives you a solid amount of inventory to compare before you buy.

Is the 2018 Volkswagen Passat a good car?

Yes — the 2018 Volkswagen Passat earns a 4.7/5 user rating and an 8/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Performance and Cost effectiveness.

Owners consistently praise the roomy interior, comfortable seating, and impressive trunk space. They also highlight its peppy acceleration, smooth ride, and strong value for money.

That makes it a good fit if you want a roomy, mainstream midsize sedan with a little more character than the average family car. 31.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2018 Volkswagen Passat reliable?

Owners rate it 4.7/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The owner feedback points to a dependable-feeling car that many shoppers feel they can count on, especially for everyday use. The review summary also emphasizes strong value, roomy comfort, and a smooth driving experience, which usually matters in long-term ownership.

The expert evaluation adds that the Passat’s upgraded engine and broad power delivery help it feel more settled and usable day to day. The cost-effectiveness notes also support the idea that it remains a sensible ownership choice.

For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about outright durability and more about finding one that has been maintained well and still feels fresh enough for your needs.

What should I look for when buying a used 2018 Volkswagen Passat?

At 57.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has had any prior body damage. Focus on panel alignment, paint consistency, tire wear, and how the car drives over rough pavement.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base S trim includes automatic headlights, 16-inch alloy wheels, a rear-view camera, a power driver’s seat, dual-zone automatic climate control, and a 5-inch touchscreen, but it lacks Car-Net App-Connect. Higher trims add features like heated mirrors and seats, a larger touchscreen, keyless ignition, a sunroof, and more upscale materials.
• Powertrain: The standard engine is a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder with 174 hp and an estimated 25 mpg city and 36 mpg highway. A 3.6-liter V6 is available on higher trims and brings 280 hp with 19/28/22 fuel economy.
• Safety package: Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert and forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking are available through the Driver Assistance package on the base S trim. Blind-spot monitoring and forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking come standard on the GT, while lane-departure warning is limited to the SEL Premium.
• Infotainment: The base S gets a 5-inch touchscreen, while other trims add a 6.3-inch screen or an upgraded infotainment system. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are standard on nearly all trims, but not on the base S.
• Fuel efficiency: The 2.0-liter engine is rated at 25 mpg city and 36 mpg highway, while the V6 returns 19/28/22.

Which 2018 Volkswagen Passat trim should I buy?

The 2018 Volkswagen Passat is offered in 5 trim levels: S, R-Line, SE, SEL Premium, GT.

Here's the short version:

• S: This is the value play if you want the lowest entry price and a solid standard equipment list, but you should strongly consider the Driver Assistance package because it adds blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert and forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking.
• R-Line: This trim adds heated side mirrors and seats, V-Tex leatherette upholstery, a larger 6.3-inch touchscreen, and more aggressive styling, making it a good step up if you want more comfort and visual appeal without jumping too far in price.
• SE: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds keyless ignition and entry, a sunroof, rear air vents, and adaptive cruise control while keeping the lineup’s practical focus intact.
• SEL Premium: Choose this if you want the most upscale Passat experience, with real leather, a power passenger seat, a memory system for the driver’s seat, an automatic parallel parking system, and the available V6.
• GT: This is the choice if you want the most character, with the V6, sport suspension, better-sounding exhaust, 19-inch wheels, and unique styling touches that make the car feel more distinctive.

The safety package on the base S is a worthwhile add-on, while the GT and SEL Premium bring the most complete feature sets.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2018 Volkswagen Passat?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile options.

• Deal availability: 31.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 698 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 1.13% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 57.7% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $11,942, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2018 Volkswagen Passat's resale value?

The current average of $12,218 sits slightly below last year's $12,357.

That modest decline suggests the market has softened a bit, which can work against future resale gains if you buy at the wrong price. On the other hand, the current range still looks stable enough that a well-kept Passat should remain reasonably easy to price competitively later.

If you buy carefully and keep mileage and condition in check, you should be able to protect a fair share of your value. Strong demand for roomy, comfortable sedans can also help support resale interest.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.7/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2018 Volkswagen Passat safe?

The Passat earns a five-star overall crash rating from NHTSA, but Marginal ratings on the passenger side in the small-overlap front crash test and headlight tests prevent it from earning a Top Safety Pick title from the IIHS.

It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

The Passat includes plenty of airbags, including side curtains for front and rear passengers. It also offers blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert and forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking through the Driver Assistance package on the base S trim, while those features come standard on the GT.

The main caveat is that the IIHS results keep it from the top tier, so you should pay close attention to trim level and available safety equipment when shopping used.

Should I buy a 2018 Volkswagen Passat or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2018 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2018 if:

• 31.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 57.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 1.13% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.7/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The upgraded engine and new GT trim give this year more character than before.

Consider the 2017 if:

• At $10,513, the 2017 costs less than the current year's $12,218 average.
• It adds standard blind-spot monitoring, App-Connect, and forward-collision warning with autonomous braking on trims above the base S.

The bottom line: The 2018 is the better pick if you want the stronger engine, the GT trim, and a more engaging Passat overall. If your priority is spending less while still getting a roomy, comfortable sedan with useful safety and smartphone features, the 2017 is the smarter value play.

How does the 2018 Volkswagen Passat compare to the 2018 Honda Accord?

Our experts score the 2018 Volkswagen Passat 8/10 and the 2018 Honda Accord 8.2/10.

The Accord has the edge in power, efficiency, and overall market breadth, while the Passat counters with a much lower average used price and a stronger deal share. If you want the better bargain and a roomier-feeling value sedan, the Passat makes a strong case. If you want the more polished all-around choice and can spend more, the Accord is the stronger pick.
