Is the 2018 Volkswagen Passat reliable?

The expert notes also emphasize that the Passat remains a competitive option, which supports the idea that it can be a dependable everyday choice when maintained properly.

The expert review highlights the upgraded base engine and the GT’s added performance hardware as meaningful updates, while the cost-effectiveness commentary suggests the car stays compelling against pricier rivals. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is less about outright durability and more about making sure the specific car you choose has been cared for well.

What should I look for when buying a used 2018 Volkswagen Passat?

At 54.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially if you are considering a higher-mileage example or one with prior bodywork. Focus on condition details that matter in daily use: interior wear, electronics, braking feel, and whether the car drives as smoothly as you expect.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base S trim includes automatic headlights, a rear-view camera, a power driver’s seat, dual-zone climate control, and a 5-inch touchscreen, but it lacks VW’s Car-Net App-Connect. Higher trims add features such as heated seats, a larger touchscreen, keyless entry, a sunroof, adaptive cruise control, and more upscale materials.
• Powertrain: The standard engine is a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder with 174 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque, while the GT adds a 3.6-liter V6 with 280 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. The 4-cylinder is rated at 25 mpg city, 36 highway, and 29 combined, while the V6 returns 19/28/22.
• Safety package: Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert and forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking can be added to the base S through the Driver Assistance package. The GT comes standard with blind-spot monitoring and forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, while lane-departure warning is limited to the SEL Premium.
• Infotainment: Most trims include Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, but the base S does not. The system uses a 5-inch touchscreen on the base trim, while higher trims move to a 6.3-inch screen and, with the Technology Package, an 8-speaker stereo and navigation.
• Fuel efficiency: The 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder is rated at 25 mpg city, 36 highway, and 29 combined. The V6 returns 19/28/22.

Which 2018 Volkswagen Passat trim should I buy?

The 2018 Volkswagen Passat is offered in 5 trim levels: S, R-Line, SE, SEL Premium, GT.

Here's the short version:

• S: This is the least expensive way in, and it gives you the core Passat experience with a rear-view camera, dual-zone climate control, and a power driver’s seat. It makes sense if you want the lowest entry price and plan to add the Driver Assistance package for extra safety tech.
• R-Line: This trim adds heated seats and mirrors, V-Tex leatherette upholstery, a larger touchscreen, and more aggressive styling. It is a good step up if you want more comfort and a more upscale look without jumping to the top of the range.
• SE: This is the best-value choice for many shoppers because it adds keyless ignition and entry, a sunroof, rear air vents, and adaptive cruise control while keeping the lineup’s practical focus. If you want the most balanced mix of features and price, this is the trim to target.
• SEL Premium: This is the most luxurious version, with real leather, a power passenger seat, a Fender stereo, memory seating, and available V6 power. Choose it if you want the most comfort and convenience features.
• GT: This is the enthusiast pick, with the V6, sport suspension, better-sounding exhaust, 19-inch wheels, and unique styling touches. It is the trim to buy if you want the Passat to feel noticeably more engaging without giving up everyday comfort.

The safety package is a strong reason to consider trims above the base S, since the Driver Assistance package adds important driver aids and the SEL Premium brings the most advanced safety equipment.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2018 Volkswagen Passat?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you compare listings carefully.

• Deal availability: 31.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 702 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 1.79% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 54.4% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $11,943, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2018 Volkswagen Passat's resale value?

The current average of $12,460 sits slightly below last year's $12,687.

That softer pricing suggests the model has already moved through some of its depreciation, which can help future sellers if they buy at the right number. If you purchase near the lower end of the current range and keep the car in good condition, you may be better positioned when it is time to resell.

The market also shows steady demand through a meaningful number of active listings, which helps support liquidity when you decide to sell. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.71/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2018 Volkswagen Passat safe?

The 2018 Volkswagen Passat earns a five-star overall rating from NHTSA, but it does not earn a Top Safety Pick title from the IIHS because of Marginal ratings on the passenger side in the small-overlap front crash test and headlight tests.

It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

The Passat includes plenty of airbags, including side curtains for front and rear passengers. Volkswagen also makes blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert and forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking available on the base S through the Driver Assistance package, while the GT comes standard with blind-spot monitoring and forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking.

One important caveat is that adaptive cruise control is not available here, and lane-departure warning is limited to the SEL Premium. If safety is a top priority, you should pay close attention to trim level and make sure the car you are considering has the driver-assistance equipment you want.

Should I buy a 2018 Volkswagen Passat or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2018 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2018 if:

• 31.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 54.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 1.79% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.71/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• Volkswagen added a more powerful base engine and a new GT trim with a V6 and sport suspension.

Consider the 2017 if:

• At $10,578, the 2017 costs less than the current year's $12,460 average.
• It emphasizes comfort, value, and a spacious interior.

The bottom line: If you want the better-rounded Passat, the 2018 is the stronger pick because it brings meaningful updates in power, trim variety, and available safety equipment. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2017 is the better value play, especially if you are comfortable giving up some of the 2018’s added performance and feature upgrades.
