CarGurus Analysis: 2018 Mercedes-Benz S-Class
Summary
With 718 currently listed for sale and an average price of $34,401, 33.7% of 2018 Mercedes-Benz S-Class models for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2018 Mercedes-Benz S-Class 4.79 / 5 stars.
63.5% of 2018 S-Class models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2018 Mercedes-Benz S-Class stands out because it sits in the W222 generation, which brought a new aluminum hybrid body shell that cut weight and improved rigidity. It also featured selectable ambient lighting, a surround-view camera system that integrated multi-modal radar and ultrasonic sensors, and a digital interface spread across two giant 12.3-inch screens under a single panel. Mercedes also kept many physical controls in this system, and night vision remained. For buyers, that combination of advanced technology, rich materials, and a deeply polished cabin is a big part of the car’s appeal.
For 2018, the lineup included the S 560 with a 4.0-liter V8 making 463 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque, plus the S 450 with a twin-turbo 3.0-liter V6 making 362 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque. The two-door models got the updated 560 powertrain, but not the V6, and the S 550e and S 600 were dropped. That leaves the 2018 S-Class feeling both powerful and highly equipped, while still offering the kind of breadth that made this generation so desirable.
It is not a cheap car to own, though. The source notes that the S-Class is expensive to buy new and costly to fuel, maintain, and insure over time, and the W222 remains expensive to maintain even with its very good reliability record. Some owner forums focus on suspension and electrical issues, so the car’s sophistication comes with the usual luxury-car upkeep concerns.

| Year-Round Low | $33,605 |
| Year-Round High | $37,265 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $37,253 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −7.83% |

Is the 2018 Mercedes-Benz S-Class a good car?
Yes — the 4.79/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction. Drivers consistently praise the luxurious interior, advanced technology, smooth performance, high-quality craftsmanship, and spacious cabin. For you, that means this model fits especially well if you want a flagship sedan centered on comfort, refinement, and a polished driving experience. With 34.1% of listings marked as good or great deals, there is also a solid amount of market opportunity if you shop carefully.
Is the 2018 Mercedes-Benz S-Class reliable?
Owners rate it 4.79/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Drivers describe the car as smooth, refined, and dependable, with praise centered on its luxury feel and advanced engineering. The broader model-year notes also point to a very good reliability record for this generation, even though upkeep can still be expensive. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is less about basic durability and more about the cost of maintaining a sophisticated luxury car over time.
What should I look for when buying a used 2018 Mercedes-Benz S-Class?
At 63.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and confirm whether any prior damage was cosmetic or structural. Then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that focuses on suspension, electrical systems, and overall maintenance quality. Because this is a complex luxury sedan, condition and service history matter more than mileage alone.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2018 Mercedes-Benz S-Class?
This is a moderate market, so you can buy selectively if the right car appears.
- Deal availability: 34.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 715 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.83% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 63.4% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $33,605, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2018 Mercedes-Benz S-Class's resale value?
The current average of $34,335 sits slightly below last year's $37,253.
That price movement suggests the market has softened, which can help you buy at a more favorable entry point today. For a future seller, it also means resale value may depend heavily on condition, mileage, and documentation rather than just the badge alone. Well-kept examples should still attract interest because this model's luxury reputation remains a major draw.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.79/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2018 Mercedes-Benz S-Class or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2018 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2018 if:
- 34.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 63.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.83% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.79/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
The bottom line:
If you want a well-equipped flagship sedan with strong owner approval and a softer price than last year, the 2018 is the primary year to target. If you're especially price-sensitive, keep shopping the broader market and focus on the cleanest, best-documented example you can find, because condition and maintenance history matter a lot in this class.
