CarGurus Analysis: 2018 Mazda CX-5
overall

Summary
With 1,934 currently listed for sale and an average price of $16,579, 35.7% of 2018 Mazda CX-5 listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2018 Mazda CX-5 4.6 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8.17 / 10.
62.5% of 2018 Mazda CX-5 listings on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2018 Mazda CX-5 stands out as a compact crossover SUV that blends style, sophistication, and substance. Mazda positions it as part of a move toward more premium territory, and the driving impression described here supports that ambition: it is presented as a vehicle that makes the driver feel engaged and have a good time behind the wheel. That combination of polish and personality is a big part of what makes the 2018 CX-5 distinctive.
It also has appeal as one of Mazda’s best-selling models, which suggests it connects with buyers beyond just its looks. Owner feedback reinforces that appeal, with praise for its smooth ride, strong feature content, stylish interior, safety features, and on-road performance. At the same time, some owners wish the cabin were larger, so the CX-5’s strengths are balanced by a practical limitation in interior space.

Its an amazing vehicle over all. Reliability is amazing, premium features are amazing, sport mode really kicks in nicely but it's quiet which feels very premium. Not a gas puzzler either. I only wish I had the remote start and android auto installed.

We like the ccs 5 grand touring models but are wary of all the add ons during the paperwork. It seems like most are over priced for the amount of miles and age. But what isn’t in this area since the California invasion.

Great value. Would give 5 stars on all categories. Acceleration is adequate but not impressive 3.5 stars. Cargo space is a little tighter than competitors but more than adequate 4 stars. Hits 5 stars on all other categories. Super riding and handling vehicle for this class. HIGHLY recommend.

How much does the 2018 Mazda CX-5 cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $16,567 |
| Year-Round Low | $16,179 |
| Year-Round High | $17,274 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $17,274 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −4.09% |
Prices have softened 4.09% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 1,952 listings available, which gives you a solid pool of options to compare.
Is the 2018 Mazda CX-5 a good car?
Yes — the 2018 Mazda CX-5 earns a 4.6/5 user rating and an 8.2/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Cost effectiveness at 10/10.
Owners consistently praise its smooth ride, great features, and stylish interior. They also like the safety features and on-road performance, which fits the CX-5’s role as a compact crossover that aims for a more premium feel. If you want a small SUV that blends style with driving enjoyment, this model year lines up well with that use case. 32.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so there are still attractive opportunities in the market.
Is the 2018 Mazda CX-5 reliable?
Owners rate it 4.6/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a dependable-feeling ownership experience, with praise for the smooth ride, safety features, and overall quality. The expert evaluation also emphasizes that the CX-5 is a vehicle you can count on for an engaging drive, with a balanced chassis and a well-sorted transmission. If you’re shopping used, the main long-term ownership risk is making sure the specific vehicle has been cared for well, especially given the note about paint flaking on certain colors.
What should I look for when buying a used 2018 Mazda CX-5?
At 62.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and confirm whether any prior damage was repaired properly. After that, prioritize a close inspection of the body, paint, cabin condition, and any signs of wear that could point to harder use or incomplete repairs. Because this model is valued for its style and premium feel, condition matters a lot when you’re comparing similar listings.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: Sport, Touring, and Grand Touring are the three versions, and the base Sport is the one most likely to leave you wanting more equipment. The higher trims add more upscale content, with the Grand Touring standing out for its richer cabin presentation and added convenience features.
- Powertrain: A 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine is the only engine offered, with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. The expert notes say it has just enough power and that the 6-speed automatic helps make the most of it.
- Safety package: The i-ActiveSense suite includes adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability, forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, and lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist. Standard blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and Smart City Brake Support are also part of the safety story, though some features vary by trim.
- Infotainment: Mazda Connect uses a freestanding screen that works as a touchscreen only when the vehicle is stopped. It does not offer Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, but it does include Aha, Pandora, Stitcher, text-messaging support, HD Radio, and E911.
- Fuel efficiency: The AWD version is rated at 26 mpg in combined driving, and the expert test loop returned 24.7 mpg.
Which 2018 Mazda CX-5 trim should I buy?
The 2018 Mazda CX-5 is offered in 3 trim levels: Sport, Touring, and Grand Touring.
Here's the short version:
- Sport: This is the entry point, and it gives you the CX-5’s core style and driving character at the lowest price. It makes sense if you want the cleanest path into the model, but it is also the trim most likely to feel stripped compared with the others.
- Touring: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds more of the features that make the CX-5 feel upscale without jumping all the way to the top price. If you want a balanced mix of equipment and value, this is the one to focus on first.
- Grand Touring: This is the most premium-feeling version, with the richest feature content and the strongest luxury-like presentation. It suits you best if you want the most polished CX-5 and are willing to pay more for it.
The safety package note is that i-ActiveSense features are standard or optional depending on trim level, so you should verify the exact equipment on any listing.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2018 Mazda CX-5?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, with enough inventory and pricing softness to reward careful shopping.
- Deal availability: 32.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,952 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.09% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 62.3% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $16,179, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2018 Mazda CX-5's resale value?
The current average of $16,567 sits slightly below last year's $17,274.
That tells you the market has softened, which can work against a future seller if prices keep drifting lower. On the other hand, the CX-5’s strong owner satisfaction and premium-leaning appeal help support demand among used buyers. If you keep the vehicle in good condition and maintain it well, it should remain competitive in the compact SUV market.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.6/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2018 Mazda CX-5 safe?
The 2018 Mazda CX-5 earns a Top Safety Pick rating from IIHS and a four-star overall rating from NHTSA because of a four-star performance in the rear-seat side-impact test.
It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.
Every 2018 CX-5 has standard blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert. Mazda’s i-ActiveSense suite is also part of the safety picture, with adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability, forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, and lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist among the highlights. One caveat is that the headlights are rated Acceptable rather than Good by IIHS, which keeps the CX-5 from earning Top Safety Pick+.
Should I buy a 2018 Mazda CX-5 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2018 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2018 if:
- 32.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 62.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.09% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.6/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- Mazda’s premium push is supported by strong design, driving feel, and cost effectiveness.
Consider the 2017 if:
- At $15,990, the 2017 costs less than the current year's $16,567 average.
- It’s the more affordable, enthusiast-leaning version with a sporty, upscale feel.
Consider the 2019 if:
- At $18,719, the 2019 costs more than the current year's $16,567 average.
- It adds Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and a stronger turbocharged top-end option.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, style, and driving enjoyment, the 2018 is the smart default. If you’re more price-sensitive, the 2017 can save you money, while the 2019 is the better pick if you want newer tech and more power.
