CarGurus Analysis: 2018 Kia Niro

Summary
With 173 currently listed for sale and an average price of $12,181.00, 27.2% of 2018 Kia Niros for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.

Why it stands out
The 2018 Kia Niro stands out as a practical hybrid crossover that puts fuel economy first without giving up everyday usefulness. It was Kia’s first dedicated hybrid, and its appeal came from combining a 1.6-liter gasoline engine, a 32-kW electric motor, and a 1.6-kWh lithium-ion polymer battery with a six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. That setup delivered 139 horsepower and 195 lb-ft of torque, and the Niro was EPA-rated at 51/46/49 mpg on the LX and EX trims for this model year. It also offered Apple CarPlay and Android Auto on the base FE, along with a seven-inch touchscreen and Kia’s Uvo telematics.
For buyers, the 2018 Niro’s strengths were its efficiency, useful equipment, and broad feature spread across the lineup. Kia added lane keep assist to the LX Advanced Technology Package for 2018, introduced the EX Premium Package with much of the Touring trim’s equipment, and made more content standard on the Touring, including a wireless phone charger and HID headlights. The Touring Graphite Edition also brought black 18-inch wheels and a silver grille. At the same time, the Niro was not a performance choice: the source describes the steering as vague in testing, and the car’s real-world fuel economy in that test was only 35 mpg. It was also noted for a conservative, dated design, even though its build quality was a bright spot.

Mileage was one of the most important things, and this has 49 or 50 combined! Unheard of for an SUV. It was so quiet. Shut the door and everything is shut out. Also comfortable. I was in a bad car accident, so a comfortable seat is important. Good visibility, and storage. I think its great!

I wanted a car that had much better gas mileage than my 2020 Nissan Kicks. My wife has a 2016 Kia Niro, so this was an easy choice to make. Im incredibly happy and satisfied with my 2018 Kia Niro, and I would recommend this vehicle!

How much does the 2018 Kia Niro cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $12,443 |
| Year-Round Low | $11,266.48 |
| Year-Round High | $13,062.35 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $12,763 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −2.51% |
Prices have softened 2.51% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 165 listings available, which suggests you have a workable amount of inventory to compare.
If you find a listing below $11,266.48, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2018 Kia Niro a good car?
Yes — the 2018 Kia Niro earns a 4.5/5 user rating, which points to strong owner satisfaction.
Owners most often praise its excellent fuel economy, spaciousness, and quiet ride. That lines up well with its practical hybrid crossover mission, especially if you want everyday usefulness, comfort, and useful features rather than a performance-focused drive. The market also shows 27.9% of listings as good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2018 Kia Niro reliable?
Owners rate it 4.5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback also leans toward dependable daily use, with repeated praise for its trouble-free feel, quiet operation, and overall confidence as a reliable hybrid SUV. That said, some owners note build-quality concerns, so a careful inspection still matters on any used example.
For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is less about the hybrid concept itself and more about finding a well-kept car with consistent maintenance and solid condition.
What should I look for when buying a used 2018 Kia Niro?
At 66.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report so you can separate clean examples from cars with prior damage. After that, prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing price looks unusually attractive. Focus your condition check on bodywork, panel alignment, interior wear, and how the hybrid system behaves in normal driving.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2018 Kia Niro?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer's market, so you can shop patiently but still move quickly on the right car.
- Deal availability: 27.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 165 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.51% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 66.1% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $11,266.48, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2018 Kia Niro's resale value?
The current average of $12,443 sits slightly below last year's $12,763.
That softer pricing suggests the model has already absorbed some depreciation, which can help future sellers if they buy at the right price today. A used Niro that is clean, well maintained, and priced near the lower end of the range should be easier to move later than one bought at the top of the market. Strong owner satisfaction also helps keep demand steady.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2018 Kia Niro or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2018 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2018 if:
- 27.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 66.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.51% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2017 if:
- At $10,693, the 2017 costs less than the current year's $12,443 average.
- It offers a broader, comfort-first hybrid appeal.
The bottom line: You should lean toward the 2018 if you want the stronger current-market balance of price, owner satisfaction, and deal availability. If your priority is spending less upfront, the 2017 is the better value play, especially if you find a clean example with a solid history.
