CarGurus Analysis: 2018 GMC Terrain
overall

Summary
With 1,829 currently listed for sale and an average price of $14,146, 29.7% of 2018 GMC Terrains for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2018 GMC Terrain 4.71 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 6.17 / 10.
62.3% of 2018 Terrain models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2018 GMC Terrain arrives with a conservatively redesigned look, but the result is a compact crossover that does not live up to its promise. It loses the rugged styling that once helped it stand out, and it does not meet safety expectations for a brand-new design. The overall impression is that it looks appealing at first glance, but falls apart under closer scrutiny.
That weak first impression carries over to the value equation, which is described as questionable. Even so, the Terrain still has some practical appeal for buyers who prioritize comfort and space, and owners often praise the variety of available features, especially in higher trim levels. Some also find it smooth and enjoyable to drive, though brake sensitivity and a lack of power in certain situations are recurring concerns.

It’s the Denali so it has everything you need plus more. Only thing that would make it better would be a V6 but this 2.0 turbo has major get up and go.

The car is amazing and of great value. We purchased this vehicle for under the market value and it is in excellent condition. I did a thorough walk around and probably looked like an idiot looking for the smallest dents and scratches. The vehicle has great options, panoramic roof and good quality materials, especially for the price. What a steal my wife got!!!!

This car exceeded my highest expectations. Very nice ride, appropriate amount of room and has a very sporty feel. Has a lot of extra features that make it over all a very nice care. The push gear buttons will take some time to get use to but over all very very cool.

I like the car, but the brakes are a little sensitive and the pick-up (from a stop) can be jerky. Otherwise, it is smooth, comfortable, and a quiet ride.

How much does the 2018 GMC Terrain cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $14,147 |
| Year-Round Low | $14,146 |
| Year-Round High | $15,678 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $15,679 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −9.77% |
Prices have softened 9.77% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 1,805 listings available, which gives you a solid amount of inventory to compare.
Is the 2018 GMC Terrain a good car?
Yes — the 2018 GMC Terrain earns a 4.71/5 user rating and a 6.17/10 expert rating. The model scores 8/10 across Performance and Form and function.
Owners consistently call out its comfort, spaciousness, and the variety of features available, especially in higher trim levels. The overview also points to practical appeal for buyers who prioritize comfort and space, even if the value equation is questioned. Many reviewers also describe it as smooth and enjoyable to drive, with the 2.0L turbo engine drawing especially positive feedback.
With 30.7% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have some room to shop selectively if you want the better-equipped versions.
Is the 2018 GMC Terrain reliable?
Owners rate it 4.71/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a vehicle that many people find comfortable and enjoyable to live with over time, and it also highlights the 2.0L turbo engine as a satisfying choice. The expert evaluation adds that the Terrain can feel smooth and composed in everyday driving, which supports the sense that it is easy to count on for routine use.
If you’re buying used, the main long-term ownership risk is less about day-to-day drivability and more about making sure you choose a well-kept example with the right equipment and condition.
What should I look for when buying a used 2018 GMC Terrain?
At 62.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a higher-mileage or heavily optioned example. Focus on condition, prior repairs, and whether the vehicle’s equipment still works as intended, since the Terrain’s appeal depends heavily on comfort and features. If you’re comparing trims, make sure the one you’re looking at actually has the equipment you want rather than assuming it comes standard.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The Terrain is offered in SL, SLE, SLT, and Denali. The SL is the most stripped-down version, with only FWD, the turbocharged 1.5-liter engine, and limited paint choices, while higher trims add more comfort and upscale touches. The Denali stands out for its extra brightwork, premium leather, and more upscale presentation.
- Powertrain: You can choose among a turbocharged 1.5-liter 4-cylinder gas engine, a turbocharged 1.6-liter diesel engine, and a turbocharged 2.0-liter gas engine. The 1.5-liter is described as adequate, while the 2.0-liter is the quicker and more satisfying choice.
- Safety package: Standard Teen Driver technology and Rear Seat Reminder are included. Other driver-assistance and collision-avoidance systems are mostly optional, and adaptive cruise control plus higher-speed automatic emergency braking are missing.
- Infotainment: The Terrain uses an 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, OnStar subscription services, a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot, navigation, an SD card reader, and four USB data ports. Wireless device charging is included on Denali.
- Fuel efficiency: The 2.0-liter engine averaged 22.6 mpg in testing, and the 1.5-liter engine was noted at 23.3 mpg in prior testing.
Which 2018 GMC Terrain trim should I buy?
The 2018 GMC Terrain is offered in 4 trim levels: SL, SLE, SLT, and Denali.
Here's the short version:
- SL: This is the bare-bones entry point, and the content makes clear that it’s limited to FWD, the 1.5-liter engine, and a very short list of options. It makes sense only if you want the lowest possible starting price and can live without much equipment.
- SLE: This is the trim you’re most likely to end up shopping, since the SL is heavily restricted. It adds enough flexibility to make the Terrain more usable, and it’s the logical starting point for most used buyers.
- SLT: This is the better-value upgrade if you want more comfort and features without jumping all the way to Denali. It should suit you if you want a more polished daily driver and are willing to pay for it.
- Denali: This is the most upscale version, with extra brightwork, premium leather, wireless charging, and a more premium feel overall. It’s the right pick if you want the most features and the most upscale presentation.
Safety-package note: standard Teen Driver technology and Rear Seat Reminder are included, while many other driver-assistance features are optional.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2018 GMC Terrain?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop with some leverage if you’re patient.
- Deal availability: 30.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,805 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 9.77% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 62.7% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $14,146, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2018 GMC Terrain's resale value?
The current average of $14,147 sits slightly below last year's $15,679.
That downward move suggests the Terrain has already absorbed some of its depreciation, which can help future sellers if prices stabilize. If you buy at the current market level and keep the vehicle in good condition, you may be better positioned than someone who paid closer to last year’s average. The key for resale will be choosing a clean, well-equipped example that still appeals to used buyers looking for comfort and features.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.71/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2018 GMC Terrain safe?
The 2018 GMC Terrain earns a four-star overall rating from NHTSA, with a three-star rating for rear seat side-impact protection.
It earns a 5/10 safety score from our experts.
Standard Teen Driver technology lets you set vehicle limits and review driving reports, and Rear Seat Reminder is also standard. The safety content also notes that adaptive cruise control and higher-speed automatic emergency braking are missing, and those omissions are especially notable for a brand-new design. The rear-seat side-impact result is the biggest caveat, particularly if you plan to carry family members in the back.
Should I buy a 2018 GMC Terrain or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2018 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2018 if:
- 30.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 62.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 9.77% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.71/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The expert summary says the 2018 Terrain is conceptually appealing but falls apart under scrutiny, with safety expectations and value both called out as weak points.
The bottom line: If you want the 2018 Terrain, the best reason to buy is that the market has softened and there are enough listings to shop carefully. For price-sensitive buyers, the current pricing can make sense if you find a clean, well-equipped example below the low end of the range, but you should be especially selective about history and condition.
