CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Volkswagen Beetle

Summary
With 247 currently listed for sale and an average price of $17,911, 27.5% of 2017 Volkswagen Beetles for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Volkswagen Beetle 5 / 5 stars.

Why it stands out
The 2017 Volkswagen Beetle stands out because it blends the model’s familiar retro charm with a more modern, more practical package. In this generation, the Beetle was based on the Volkswagen Golf, used a front-engine, front-wheel drive layout, and grew longer and wider than the earlier “new” Beetle, which helped create a roomier interior and significantly more trunk space. It also kept the distinctive Beetle personality while adopting a more coupe-like profile, so it still looked unmistakably like a Beetle without feeling as rounded or cutesy as before.
For 2017, Volkswagen gave the Beetle a comprehensive update that brought new bumpers, a revised dashboard, and equipment upgrades. That same model year also added the limited-edition #PinkBeetle, with unique “Fresh Fuchsia Metallic” paintwork, special “Pink Club” seating fabric, bi-xenon headlights, and keyless access. The broader lineup was also varied, with trim names such as Classic, Dune, #PinkBeetle, S, Coast, SE, Final Edition SE, and Final Edition SEL appearing at one time or another from the 2017 model year onward. Buyers looking at this car can also appreciate that the third-generation Beetle was described as well-made, with a premium ambience inside.
There are tradeoffs, though. The Beetle was not especially practical compared with some rivals, and visibility wasn’t great. Reliability also wasn’t a strong point, with engines and timing chains noted as potential trouble spots. Even so, the 2017 Volkswagen Beetle remains appealing for shoppers who want a compact car with distinctive styling, a well-equipped feel, and more usable space than earlier Beetles.

How much does the 2017 Volkswagen Beetle cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $18,077 |
| Year-Round Low | $16,195 |
| Year-Round High | $18,077 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $17,473 |
| Change vs. Last Year | +3.46% |
Prices are up 3.46% year-over-year — a sign of continued demand for this model year.
There are 248 listings available, which gives you a modest amount of inventory to compare before you buy.
Is the 2017 Volkswagen Beetle a good car?
Yes — the 5/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction. The 2017 Volkswagen Beetle stands out because it blends the model’s familiar retro charm with a more modern, more practical package, including a roomier interior and significantly more trunk space than earlier Beetles. It also keeps the distinctive Beetle personality while feeling less rounded and more coupe-like, and the cabin is described as well made with a premium ambience. With 27.4% of listings marked as good or great deals, you still have some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2017 Volkswagen Beetle reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The 2017 Volkswagen Beetle’s overview still points to reliability concerns, with engines and timing chains noted as potential trouble spots. That means you should treat condition and maintenance history as especially important if you plan to keep the car for the long haul. For used buyers, the main ownership risk is ending up with a car that looks appealing but carries expensive mechanical baggage.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Volkswagen Beetle?
At 54.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and confirm whether any prior damage was repaired properly. Put inspection priority on body condition, panel alignment, and signs of past collision work, then make sure the car’s mechanical condition matches its appearance. Because reliability concerns include engines and timing chains, a pre-purchase inspection should focus on those areas as well.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Volkswagen Beetle?
This is a seller’s market, so you should act selectively and be ready to move when a strong listing appears.
- Deal availability: 27.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 248 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices are up 3.46% year-over-year.
- Clean inventory: 54.4% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $16,195, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Volkswagen Beetle's resale value?
The current average of $18,077 sits slightly above last year's $17,473.
That upward move suggests the market is still willing to pay for this model year’s mix of style and practicality. If you buy well and keep the car in good condition, you may have a better chance of preserving value than with a weaker-demand used compact. The limited supply of clean, well-priced examples can also help support resale strength when you decide to sell.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2017 Volkswagen Beetle or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 27.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 54.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices are up 3.46% year-over-year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2018 if:
- At $18,906, the 2018 costs more than the current year's $18,077 average.
- It gets a new 2.0-liter turbocharged engine.
The bottom line: The 2017 is the better starting point if you want the stronger value proposition and more room to shop for a deal. If you want the newer model-year update and are willing to pay more, the 2018 is the cleaner upgrade path. For price-sensitive buyers, the 2017 remains the more compelling choice as long as you verify history and condition carefully.
