Is the 2017 Toyota Highlander a good car?

Yes — the 2017 Toyota Highlander earns a 4.86/5 user rating and a 7.17/10 expert rating. The model scores 8/10 across Look and feel and Form and function.

Owners consistently praise its comfort, power, and smooth driving experience, and they also value its family-friendly design and impressive features. There are 35.2% good or great deals in the market, so you still have room to shop selectively.

Is the 2017 Toyota Highlander reliable?

Owners rate it 4.86/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The owner feedback points to a vehicle that feels dependable and trouble-free in daily use, with buyers repeatedly highlighting comfort and the sense that it delivers strong long-term value. The expert evaluation also emphasizes that Toyota kept the Highlander fresh with an updated engine and standard safety equipment, which supports confidence in how it should hold up over time.

Toyota also makes the first scheduled maintenance visit part of the ownership experience, which is a helpful perk when you are comparing used SUVs.

For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about the Highlander’s core reputation and more about finding one that has been maintained well and not worn down by family use.

What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Toyota Highlander?

At 58.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then focus your inspection on body condition, repair quality, and signs of uneven wear. Because this is a family-oriented three-row SUV, it is also worth checking the cabin closely for heavy use, especially in the second and third rows.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The LE starts with the basics, but the LE Plus adds the features many shoppers will want, including tri-zone climate control, an 8-inch touchscreen, a power driver’s seat, and a power liftgate. The LE is also described as having the older 2.7-liter 4-cylinder, while the V6 is the better choice for this vehicle’s size.
• Powertrain: The 3.5-liter V6 gains 25 hp and 15 lb-ft, and it is paired with an 8-speed automatic. The V6 is described as capable in traffic and on the highway, and the AWD version is rated at 19 city, 26 highway, and 22 combined mpg.
• Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense is standard and includes adaptive cruise with forward-collision warning and auto braking, lane-departure warning and intervention, and auto high beams. That standard equipment is a major advantage, especially on lower trims.
• Infotainment: The Highlander gets four USB charge ports, and the LE Plus adds an 8-inch touchscreen. Higher trims bring features such as navigation and rear-seat entertainment, while the Limited Platinum is the only trim mentioned with rear parking sensors and a 360-degree camera.
• Fuel efficiency: The V6 is rated at 20 mpg city, 27 highway, and 23 combined with rear-wheel drive, or 19 city, 26 highway, and 22 combined with all-wheel drive. Real-world testing returned an average of 19 mpg.

Which 2017 Toyota Highlander trim should I buy?

The 2017 Toyota Highlander is offered in 5 trim levels: LE, LE Plus, XLE, SE, Limited, and Limited Platinum.

Here's the short version:

• LE: This is the entry point, but it is held back by the older 2.7-liter 4-cylinder and is best avoided unless price is your only priority. Even so, it still includes alloy wheels, heated mirrors, Bluetooth, wiper de-icers, and standard Toyota Safety Sense.
• LE Plus: This is the best-value trim because it adds the equipment many shoppers expect, including tri-zone climate control, an 8-inch touchscreen, a power driver’s seat, and a power liftgate. If you want the smartest balance of price and features, this is the trim to target.
• XLE: This is the trim where keyless entry and ignition finally appear, along with the kind of comfort and convenience upgrades that make the Highlander feel more complete.
• SE: This is the most distinctive choice if you want the sporty setup, with a retuned suspension, LED running lights, 19-inch alloys, and sporty styling inside and out. It is also the trim the expert recommends test driving before deciding.
• Limited: This trim adds more luxury-oriented equipment, including rear parking sensors, heated and ventilated front seats with driver memory, an upgraded 12-speaker JBL sound system, and second-row captain’s chairs.
• Limited Platinum: This is the top-end choice, adding a panoramic sunroof, front parking sensors, auto wipers, and heat for the steering wheel and second-row seats.

Toyota Safety Sense is standard, which is a major safety advantage across the lineup.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Toyota Highlander?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.

• Deal availability: 35.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 2,133 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 4.00% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 58.6% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $19,625, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2017 Toyota Highlander's resale value?

The current average of $20,030 sits slightly below last year's $20,865.

That softer pricing suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable point in the cycle. For a future seller, that also means resale value will depend heavily on condition, mileage, and how well the vehicle has been maintained.

Because the Highlander still draws strong owner satisfaction, demand should remain healthy for clean examples with the right equipment and a solid history. Well-kept trims with desirable features should be easier to move than neglected or accident-damaged ones.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.86/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2017 Toyota Highlander safe?

The 2017 Toyota Highlander earns top overall marks from both IIHS and NHTSA, and it earns five-star ratings overall from NHTSA, with four-star ratings in the frontal crash and rollover tests.

It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

Toyota Safety Sense is standard, and it includes adaptive cruise with forward-collision warning and auto braking, lane-departure warning and intervention, and auto high beams. That standard suite is a major strength, especially because it comes on the base trim.

One caveat is that the IIHS gave the Highlander an Acceptable rating for headlights, so lighting performance is not quite as strong as the rest of its crash-test results.

Should I buy a 2017 Toyota Highlander or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2017 if:

• 35.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 58.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 4.00% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.86/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• Toyota added an updated V6, a new SE trim, and standard Toyota Safety Sense this year.

The bottom line: The 2017 Highlander is the right pick if you want the refreshed version with standard safety tech, strong owner satisfaction, and a market that still offers some negotiating room. If your priority is simply the lowest possible price, you may want to compare nearby years and focus on the cleanest, best-maintained example rather than the newest badge.
