CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Subaru WRX STI

Summary
With 222 currently listed for sale and an average price of $21,997.00, 27.9% of 2017 Subaru WRX STIs for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Subaru WRX STI 5 / 5 stars.
57.2% of 2017 WRX STI models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2017 Subaru WRX STI stands out as a focused, rally-inspired performance sedan with a strong motorsport identity. Its name and engineering are directly tied to Subaru’s rally racing efforts, and the car is presented as a direct offshoot of the company’s World Rally Championship machines. That character shows up in its standard all-wheel drive, its performance-first setup, and its reputation as a serious track-day or gravel-road car that still works as everyday transportation.
What makes the 2017 Subaru WRX STI especially distinctive is how much hardware it brings to the experience. It uses a turbocharged 2.5-liter boxer four-cylinder engine, a six-speed manual transmission, Driver Controlled Center Differential, Multi-mode Vehicle Dynamics Control, and Subaru Intelligent Drive. The car also includes Brembo performance brakes, Super Sport ABS, and a suspension tuned for sharp handling. Inside, it offers a 7-inch navigation screen, Bluetooth, automatic climate control, and aux inputs, which help make it more usable than its aggressive styling might suggest.
At the same time, the WRX STI is not trying to be a soft or luxurious sedan. The ride is described as rough in daily driving, the interior materials are cheap, and the sound system is underwhelming. Even so, those compromises are part of the car’s appeal for buyers who want a practical performance car with real character, strong all-weather capability, and a reputation that has made it increasingly desirable over time.

Very unique design. Great daily sport car , gets lots of attention on the street. The car drives like a beast especially when cornering in turns. Make sure you always keep up the maintenance and check your coolant and oil often.

How much does the 2017 Subaru WRX STI cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $21,945 |
| Year-Round Low | $21,015.54 |
| Year-Round High | $22,263.31 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $22,236 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −1.30% |
Prices have softened 1.30% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
With 225 listings available, you have a modest amount of inventory to compare across price and condition.
If you find a listing below $21,015.54, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2017 Subaru WRX STI a good car?
Yes — 5/5 is a strong user rating for this model year, and it lines up with the car’s focused, rally-inspired performance identity. The overview points to a standard all-wheel-drive setup, a performance-first chassis, and hardware that makes it appealing if you want a serious track-day or gravel-road car that still works as everyday transportation. It also gives you useful everyday equipment like navigation, Bluetooth, and automatic climate control, even if comfort is not the main priority. 23.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2017 Subaru WRX STI reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The overview presents it as a car built around durable, performance-oriented hardware rather than luxury features, with standard all-wheel drive, a six-speed manual, and a robust rally-bred setup. That kind of design can be appealing if you want a car with a clear purpose and strong mechanical character. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that a hard-driven performance car can hide wear, so condition and maintenance history matter more than mileage alone.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Subaru WRX STI?
At 58.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report so you can separate clean examples from cars with prior damage or repeated claims. After that, prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that focuses on suspension, brakes, drivetrain behavior, and signs of hard use, since this model is built for performance and may have been driven that way. Pay close attention to overall condition, because the car’s appeal depends heavily on how well it has been maintained and whether it still feels tight and sorted.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Subaru WRX STI?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully without expecting a deep bargain on every listing.
- Deal availability: 23.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 225 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.30% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 58.2% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $21,015.54, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Subaru WRX STI's resale value?
The current average of $21,945 sits slightly below last year's $22,236.
That tells you the market has eased a bit, which can help you buy more carefully now but may also limit short-term upside if you plan to resell soon. Even so, the model’s strong enthusiast identity and rally-inspired appeal can help support demand when the car is clean, well kept, and properly documented. If you buy a good example and maintain it well, you give yourself a better chance of holding value than you would with a more ordinary sedan.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2017 Subaru WRX STI or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 23.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 58.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.30% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: You should lean toward the 2017 if you want the rally-inspired character, strong all-weather capability, and performance-first setup that define this model year. If you are more price-sensitive, a nearby year may be worth comparing, but the 2017 remains a compelling choice when you find a clean, well-priced example with solid history and maintenance records.
