Why it stands out
With standard all-wheel drive and affordable tech, the 2017 Subaru Impreza stands out as a sensible choice in a segment where many shoppers might otherwise turn to a crossover. It is one of the few sedan or hatchback options for buyers who want that kind of body style with all-wheel drive, and it brings a practical, affordable, and safe package to the table.
The 2017 Subaru Impreza is also appealing because it is described as all-new and as a great car, which helps explain why it can satisfy both longtime Subaru fans and first-time owners. Its main drawback is that it is not as refined as it could be, so buyers who prioritize polish over practicality may notice its limitations.

My wife and I were both civic owners for 13+ years each. She got a Crosstrek a few years back, which has been really good to us so far. So when my civic started overstaying its welcome I decided to include subaru in my search. Also test drove a honda civic and toyota corolla. While the Subaru doest exactly have the most potent acceleration- slowest of this group - it is the most fun to drive, in my opinion. The sport trim has a differently-tuned suspension and a tighter steering ratio. Combine these features with the all wheel drive and what you get is a car that you just want to drive. Subaru also got their act together with the interior. The visibility on the subaru is great (corolla is good too). However, the civics rear visibility was lacking because of the cars aggressively sloped rear end. Plus, the subaru just feels way more solidly built than the corolla or civic.

Its hard to see the oil pressure and the engine status of the car. This may be obvious to the car computer. But this is a user experience.

Is the 2017 Subaru Impreza a good car?
Generally — the 2017 Subaru Impreza earns a 4.3/5 user rating and an 8/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Form and function, Cost effectiveness, and Safety.
With standard all-wheel drive, affordable tech, and a practical sedan-or-hatchback layout, it is aimed at buyers who want a sensible alternative to a crossover. The tradeoff is that it is not as refined as some rivals, so you should expect practicality and value to matter more than polish.
There are 29.4% of listings priced as good or great deals, which suggests there is still room to find a competitive offer.
Is the 2017 Subaru Impreza reliable?
Owners rate it 4.3/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
The 2017 Impreza is presented as practical, affordable, and safe, with standard all-wheel drive and a straightforward daily-driver focus. Its powertrain is described as a 2-liter, 152-hp boxer engine paired with a CVT, and the writeup notes that the CVT shift behavior issue from earlier Subaru models seems to have been resolved for 2017.
It also benefits from affordable active safety and standard smartphone integration, which can reduce ownership friction over time. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about outright durability and more about living with a car that is intentionally basic in refinement.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Subaru Impreza?
At 58.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has been in a prior collision. Focus on body condition, panel alignment, interior wear, and whether the car’s safety and driver-assistance features work as expected.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: In 2.0i trim, the car starts with a 5-speed stick shift, cloth seats, a 4-speaker sound system, and manual climate control, while Premium adds an automatic transmission and more options. Sport adds minor performance-oriented touches, and Limited can be ordered with leather, a moonroof, and upgraded infotainment.
- Powertrain: The only engine choice is Subaru’s 2-liter, 152-hp 4-cylinder boxer engine, and the CVT helps deliver up to 38 mpg highway and 28 city. The Sport trim adds torque vectoring, and it also offers an optional stick shift.
- Safety package: EyeSight is the named driver-assistance suite, and it can alert drivers who stray from their lanes, automatically brake in an emergency, and adjust cruise control automatically to follow the car in front. On Premium, EyeSight adds $1,395 and is bundled with blind-spot detection and steering-responsive fog lights.
- Infotainment: Every 2017 Impreza comes standard with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and the touchscreen gives you access to music, podcasts, and navigation. The Premium trim is also where EyeSight is paired with additional safety equipment.
- Fuel efficiency: The Impreza gets 38 mpg highway and 28 city.
Which 2017 Subaru Impreza trim should I buy?
The 2017 Subaru Impreza is offered in 4 trim levels: 2.0i, Premium, Sport, Limited.
Here's the short version:
- 2.0i: This is the value entry point if you want the lowest starting price and can live with the most basic setup, including a 5-speed stick shift, cloth seats, a 4-speaker sound system, and manual climate control.
- Premium: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds an automatic transmission and opens the door to more options, while also being the trim where EyeSight can be added for $1,395 with blind-spot detection and steering-responsive fog lights.
- Sport: Choose this if you want the trim with torque vectoring and an optional stick shift, since it adds the most clearly distinct driving-focused hardware.
- Limited: Pick this if you want the most upscale equipment, including available leather, a moonroof, and upgraded infotainment.
EyeSight is available on Premium, and that trim-level safety note is worth keeping in mind if driver assistance is a priority.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Subaru Impreza?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you should shop carefully and compare listings before moving quickly.
- Deal availability: 29.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 854 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices are up 1.59% year-over-year.
- Clean inventory: 58.2% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $11,998, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Subaru Impreza's resale value?
The current average of $12,697 sits slightly above last year's $12,499.
That upward move suggests the market has held up reasonably well for this model year. If you buy now and keep the car in good condition, you may benefit from the fact that demand appears steady rather than collapsing.
The Impreza’s practical appeal and standard all-wheel drive help support interest from used buyers. Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.3/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2017 Subaru Impreza safe?
The 2017 Subaru Impreza is a Top Safety Pick Plus from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration gives it a top five-star safety rating.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
EyeSight is the named driver-assistance suite, and it uses two windshield-mounted cameras to provide lane-departure alerts, automatic emergency braking, and adaptive cruise control. On Premium, it adds $1,395 and is bundled with blind-spot detection and steering-responsive fog lights.
One caveat is that the adaptive cruise behavior has an odd flaw: if the car stays stopped for more than 3 seconds, the system turns off and the car can start to roll forward, so you should pay close attention in stop-and-go traffic.
Should I buy a 2017 Subaru Impreza or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 29.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 58.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices are up 1.59% year-over-year.
- Owners rate it 4.3/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- It is described as all-new, practical, affordable, and safe, with standard all-wheel drive and affordable tech.
The bottom line: If you want a practical compact car with standard all-wheel drive, the 2017 is the right year to focus on. If you are more price-sensitive, you may want to compare nearby years and prioritize the cleanest, best-priced example rather than chasing a specific model year alone.
