CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Lexus ES

Summary
With 574 currently listed for sale and an average price of $21,653.00, 35.2% of 2017 Lexus ES models for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Lexus ES 5 / 5 stars.
46.2% of 2017 ES models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2017 Lexus ES stands out as a quiet, comfort-first luxury sedan that emphasizes refinement over flash. It was part of the generation that brought a wider stance, increased structural rigidity, and a coupe-like roofline, while also moving the seating position lower and further back. That redesign gave the ES more rear-seat legroom and a more modern presence without abandoning the relaxed character that has long defined the model.
For 2017, the ES 350 used a 3.5-liter naturally aspirated V6 producing 302 hp and 267 lb-ft, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive. The ES 300h hybrid combined a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with an electric motor and a CVT for 215 hp. Standard equipment was generous, including synthetic leather upholstery, heated power front seats, LED headlights, a power moonroof, and a full suite of safety tech such as adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, traffic-sign recognition, and high-beam assist. Available options like a Mark Levinson stereo, head-up display, panoramic glass roof, surround-view cameras, and a power rear sunshade added even more upscale appeal.
Its strengths are the ones many buyers shopping for a used luxury sedan care about most: a great ride, plenty of cargo space, and strong value. The ES also earned top safety recognition from both the IIHS and NHTSA in this generation. The tradeoff is that it was never meant to be especially exciting to drive or look at, so buyers seeking a sportier personality may find its calm, understated approach more appealing than its performance.

Very well appointed with lots of leg and arm room compared to our 2010 ES 350. The only thing I really dont care for is the analog clock. It reminds me a lot of my old Mercury Milan. Overall, this car is an excellent value.

Yes — the 2017 Lexus ES earns a 5/5 user rating, which points to very strong owner satisfaction.
Drivers consistently praise its smooth ride, luxurious interior, and reliability. Comfort and build quality also come up repeatedly, which fits a sedan aimed at relaxed daily driving and upscale commuting.
If you want a quiet, comfort-first luxury sedan with generous equipment and a refined feel, this model year lines up well with that use case. The market also shows 33.7% of listings as good or great deals, so you still have room to shop selectively.
Is the 2017 Lexus ES reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The review summary also highlights reliability directly, along with dependable build quality and a trouble-free ownership experience. That combination suggests the ES is the kind of used luxury sedan many buyers can count on for steady everyday use.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about the model’s reputation and more about finding one with clean history and consistent maintenance.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Lexus ES?
At 45.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and confirm whether any damage, repairs, or title issues show up in the record. After that, prioritize a pre-purchase inspection so you can evaluate body condition, panel alignment, tires, brakes, and interior wear.
Because this is a comfort-focused luxury sedan, pay close attention to how well the cabin, electronics, and ride quality have held up over time.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Lexus ES?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully without expecting every listing to be a bargain.
- Deal availability: 33.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 602 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.39% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 45.8% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $20,367.49, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Lexus ES's resale value?
The current average of $21,547 sits slightly below last year's $21,852.
That modest decline suggests the market has softened a bit, which can help you buy more confidently now but may also limit short-term upside if you plan to resell soon. For a future seller, the key takeaway is that pricing discipline matters: a well-kept example should still attract interest, but overpricing could slow your sale.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2017 Lexus ES or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 33.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 45.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.39% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2016 if:
- At $19,843, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $21,547 average.
- It offers a quieter, comfort-focused cabin with easy tech features.
The bottom line: You should lean toward the 2017 if you want the stronger current-market balance of price, satisfaction, and availability. If your priority is saving money upfront, the 2016 is the better secondary path, especially if you find one in excellent condition and can live with the older model year’s lower asking price.
