CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe

Summary
With 420 currently listed for sale and an average price of $12,088.00, 32.4% of 2017 Hyundai Santa Fes for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe 4.67 / 5 stars.
55.5% of 2017 Santa Fe models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe stands out as a practical midsize SUV that balances space, comfort, and value. It was part of the third generation, which offered both two-row and three-row versions, and the larger Santa Fe’s rear-seat legroom was a big selling point. Hyundai also equipped it with useful everyday features such as standard cloth seats, power windows, mirrors, and locks, a six-speaker stereo, an iPod or USB jack, and BlueLink connected features. For buyers who wanted more convenience, the lineup could include heated second-row seats, leather, a backup camera, and dual-zone climate control.
What makes the 2017 model especially appealing is its broad range of powertrain and equipment choices. The Santa Fe offered a 2.4-liter inline-four or a 2.7-liter V6, both with front- or all-wheel drive, and the turbo models added fog lights, heated mirrors, roof rack rails, a proximity key, and an eight-way power driver’s seat. That mix of usable equipment and flexible configurations helped give the Santa Fe a strong value proposition. At the same time, it was not the most polished choice in every respect, with the generation noted for sloppy steering and handling, so its appeal was more about comfort, utility, and equipment than driving excitement.

This is an excellent choice for me. It had all the features I wanted and it was the best value when compared to the Acura MDX or the Mazda CX9 which were the only other mid size crossovers with a third row seat. Most other vehicles were larger and didnt have a smooth ride. We ended up buying a Toyota Highlander because the seats in the Santa Fe were too narrow for my husband.

The ultimate trim package is great. Smooth ride, great features, fantastic warranty for CPO. Wish the ultimate included auto lift gate on the back, but not a major flaw.

What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe?
At 58% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report so you can separate clean examples from those with past damage. After that, prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially on suspension, steering, and interior condition, since those areas matter most in a family SUV. Focus on how the vehicle has been used and maintained, not just on mileage or trim level.

What is the 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe's resale value?
The current average of $12,132 sits slightly below last year's $13,164.
That decline suggests the market has become a bit softer, which can work against you if you're planning to sell soon. On the other hand, it can help you buy at a more favorable entry point today. If you keep the vehicle in strong condition and maintain it well, you may be better positioned when it comes time to resell.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.67/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 27.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 58% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.84% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.67/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2018 if:
- At $14,511, the 2018 costs more than the current year's $12,132 average.
- It emphasizes safety and bargain value in a roomy three-row package.
The bottom line: You should lean toward the 2017 if you want the better price and are willing to shop carefully for condition and history. If you can stretch your budget and want a newer-feeling alternative with a stronger safety/value pitch, the 2018 is the better secondary path for price-sensitive buyers who still want a family-size SUV.
