CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Honda HR-V

Summary
With 943 currently listed for sale and an average price of $15,068.00, 29.0% of 2017 Honda HR-Vs for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Honda HR-V 4.4 / 5 stars.
57.9% of 2017 HR-V models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2017 Honda HR-V stands out as a practical subcompact crossover that blends the footprint of a small car with the usefulness of an SUV. It uses a 1.8-litre, four-cylinder powertrain with 141hp and a CVT automatic transmission designed more for fuel economy than performance, and the EPA rating is 29 MPG. That combination helps explain its appeal to buyers who want an affordable, easygoing daily driver rather than a vehicle focused on speed.
What makes the 2017 HR-V especially distinctive is its Magic Seat system, which allows the rear seats to fold in multiple ways for different seating and cargo needs. Honda describes Utility Mode, Tall Mode, and Long Mode for carrying everything from bulky items to long gear, and the cargo area measures 58.8 cubic feet. The model also had a clunky infotainment system in early cars, which is worth noting, but later models improved it. For 2017, the HR-V’s strengths are its versatility, good ride comfort, and strong reputation for reliability, while its weak acceleration and limited engine choice are the main tradeoffs.

This could be a great value but this model has transmission issues and I was told it wouldn’t be covered because of the salvage title.

I love my Honda and it is a great value. My car is only missing air/heat vents in the back on the vehicle.

I love this car and ended up buying it because of it being such a smooth vehicle to drive with touch screen controls, heated seats, and a sunroof. Over all just a nice, clean, little SUV!

There is no extra storage space. Given the fact that it is the smallest of the SUV lineup for Honda but top of the line in the package, I guess I expected more.

Is the 2017 Honda HR-V reliable?
Owners rate it 4.4/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback also points to reliability as a strength, with drivers describing the HR-V as dependable and trouble-free in everyday use. At the same time, some owners reported transmission concerns, so a used example with a clean service history is the safer long-term bet.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Honda HR-V?
At 58% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and confirm whether any prior damage was repaired properly. Put the inspection focus on body panels, alignment, and signs of uneven wear, then make sure the transmission and infotainment system behave as expected on a test drive. For this model, condition matters a lot because the best used examples are the ones that still feel smooth, clean, and well maintained.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Honda HR-V?
This is a moderate, selective buyer's market, so you can shop with some leverage if you stay disciplined.
- Deal availability: 32.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 927 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices are up 1.81% year-over-year.
- Clean inventory: 58.0% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $14,149.62, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Honda HR-V's resale value?
The current average of $15,095 sits slightly above last year's $14,827.
That upward move suggests the market still sees value in this model year, which can help support resale strength if you buy well and keep the vehicle in good condition. Because prices have risen modestly rather than sharply, you may not see dramatic appreciation, but you can still expect steady demand from shoppers who want a practical, affordable crossover.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.4/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2017 Honda HR-V or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 32.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 58% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices are up 1.81% year-over-year.
- Owners rate it 4.4/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2016 if:
- At $13,992, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $15,095 average.
- It offers good value and a spacious feel.
Consider the 2018 if:
- At $16,261, the 2018 costs more than the current year's $15,095 average.
- It adds a more premium cabin and optional all-wheel drive.
The bottom line: The 2017 is the best all-around pick if you want a balanced mix of value, owner satisfaction, and market availability. If your priority is spending less, the 2016 is the smarter price-sensitive choice; if you want a newer-feeling cabin and can pay more, the 2018 is worth a look.
