CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Honda HR-V

Summary
With 61 currently listed for sale near Los Angeles, CA and an average price of $14,311, 26.2% of 2017 Honda HR-Vs for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Honda HR-V 4.4 / 5 stars.
100.0% of 2017 HR-V models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2017 Honda HR-V stands out as a practical subcompact crossover that blends SUV versatility with the footprint of a small car. It uses a 1.8-litre, four-cylinder powertrain with 141hp and a CVT automatic transmission designed more for fuel economy than performance, and front-wheel drive models were also available with a six-speed manual transmission. Honda’s Magic Seat system is one of its defining features, giving the rear seats multiple folding configurations for different cargo and seating needs, and the cargo area measures 58.8 cubic feet.
For 2017, the HR-V’s appeal is rooted in its usefulness and value rather than outright speed. The model’s reputation for reliability is a major draw, and owners often praise its smooth driving experience and value for money. At the same time, this early version is not without drawbacks: the infotainment system was clunky in early cars, and some owners reported transmission concerns, especially when accelerating hard. That makes the 2017 HR-V a sensible choice for buyers who want a versatile, efficient crossover with a clever interior, as long as they are comfortable with its modest performance and dated tech.

This could be a great value but this model has transmission issues and I was told it wouldn’t be covered because of the salvage title.

I love my Honda and it is a great value. My car is only missing air/heat vents in the back on the vehicle.

I love this car and ended up buying it because of it being such a smooth vehicle to drive with touch screen controls, heated seats, and a sunroof. Over all just a nice, clean, little SUV!

There is no extra storage space. Given the fact that it is the smallest of the SUV lineup for Honda but top of the line in the package, I guess I expected more.

Owners commonly praise its smooth driving experience, value for money, and useful features like the touch screen controls, heated seats, and sunroof. Rooted in its role as a practical subcompact crossover, it works well if you want a city-friendly vehicle with SUV versatility and a clever interior. With 30.7% of listings marked as good or great deals, you still have room to shop selectively.
Is the 2017 Honda HR-V reliable?
Owners rate it 4.4/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback also highlights reliability as a strength, with many drivers describing the HR-V as dependable and trouble-free over time. At the same time, some owners reported transmission concerns, so you should pay close attention to how the vehicle drives and shifts during a test drive. For used buyers, that means long-term ownership risk is manageable, but only if you verify condition carefully.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Honda HR-V?
At 58.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report so you can separate clean examples from cars with prior damage. Then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing has higher mileage or incomplete service records. Focus on overall condition, drivability, and any signs of transmission issues or neglected maintenance.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Honda HR-V?
This is a moderate buyer’s market, so you can be selective without expecting deep discounts on every listing.
- Deal availability: 30.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 959 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices are up 1.84% year-over-year.
- Clean inventory: 58.1% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $14,153, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Honda HR-V's resale value?
The current average of $15,005 sits slightly above last year's $14,734.
That upward move suggests the market has held steady for this model year, which can help support resale confidence if you buy at the right price. Because values are trending higher, a well-kept HR-V may be easier to move later than one with visible wear or a questionable history. Strong owner satisfaction also helps keep demand steady when you decide to sell.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.4/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2017 Honda HR-V or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 30.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 58.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices are up 1.84% year-over-year.
- Owners rate it 4.4/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2016 if:
- At $13,877, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $15,005 average.
- It offers value-focused ownership with a spacious, smooth-driving feel.
Consider the 2018 if:
- At $16,070, the 2018 costs more than the current year's $15,005 average.
- It adds a more premium cabin and optional all-wheel drive.
The bottom line: The 2017 is the best fit if you want a balanced mix of price, owner satisfaction, and practical utility. If you’re more price-sensitive, the 2016 is the smarter value play; if you want a newer-feeling cabin and can spend more, the 2018 is worth a look.
