CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback
overall

Summary
With 586 currently listed for sale and an average price of $16,360, 32.6% of 2017 Honda Civic Hatchbacks for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback 4.56 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8 / 10.
53.2% of 2017 Civic Hatchback models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback is more of a good thing, and its appeal starts with the fact that it brought the Civic hatchback body style back to the U.S. for the first time since 2005. Honda had already redesigned the Civic for 2016 with a new look, new technology, and a new turbocharged engine option, and the hatchback joined that formula with extra cargo space and sport-oriented tweaks. That combination makes it especially attractive to buyers who want a compact car that is practical without giving up a fun-to-drive character.
In testing, the Civic Hatchback came across as an easy car to enjoy in everyday use, handling stop-and-go commuting and a highway drive with a full hatch of cargo without losing its appeal. It is still a Civic, so it remains a safe bet, but the hatchback body gives it a little more versatility and a little more personality. Owners also tend to praise its performance, reliability, spacious interior, smooth driving experience, and stylish design. Some drawbacks have been noted as well, including concerns about the air conditioning system, paint quality, and the lack of certain features like GPS.

I love the features in the car. It's exactly what my daughter wanted. It's a little too low to the ground.

I am obsessed with this car. Best car I have ever had. I previously had the LX, but it got totalled, and I bought the same exact car but it is the EX. Heated seats, sunroof, push start. I really, really love it.

The features on this car is something else. The car has a blind spot camera on the right mirror. Hondas are a really reliable car. We’ve had a Honda until it had 300k+ miles on it and had no problems. Only thing I wish it had was a GPS but it’s not a huge negative. I was looking at either the Mazda3 hatchback or the civic hatchback and ultimately went with the civic just with the sleek design of the vehicle. Super smooth in its driving and would definitely recommend going Honda!

Prices have softened 2.63% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 580 listings available, which gives you a solid pool to compare prices and equipment. If you find a listing below $15,678.86, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback a good car?
Yes — the 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback earns a 4.56/5 user rating and an 8.00/10 expert rating. The model scores 8/10 across Look and feel, Performance, Form and function, Cost effectiveness, Technology, and Safety.
Owners consistently praise its performance, reliability, and spacious interior, and they also like its smooth driving experience and stylish design. That lines up with the hatchback’s use case as a practical compact car with extra cargo space and everyday usability, while still feeling engaging behind the wheel. 33.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so you still have room to shop selectively.
Is the 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback reliable?
Owners rate it 4.56/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Owner feedback highlights the car’s reliability and long history of reliability, along with a reputation for being a car you can count on. The expert evaluation also describes the Civic as a safe bet and notes its long history of reliability in the context of the model’s overall appeal. With that said, used buyers should still watch for age-related wear and the owner-reported concerns around air conditioning and paint quality, since those can affect long-term ownership costs.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback?
At 52.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has had bodywork or shows uneven panel gaps, paint mismatch, or signs of poor repair. Because owner feedback mentions air conditioning concerns and paint quality issues, it makes sense to focus your inspection on those areas as well as general interior and exterior condition. If you’re comparing multiple listings, favor the cleanest example over the cheapest one.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The hatchback’s styling is shared across the lineup, but the hatch-specific blacked-out wheels and honeycomb trim help distinguish it from other Civic body styles. The cabin is smartly laid out and uses quality materials, while the hatchback’s added cargo space is the main practical advantage over the sedan.
- Powertrain: The hatchback uses a 1.5-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder. LX, EX, and EX-L Navi trims make 174 hp, while Sport and Sport Touring trims increase output to 180 hp. The 6-speed manual is standard on LX and Sport, while the CVT is optional on LX and Sport and required on EX, EX-L Navi, and Sport Touring.
- Safety package: Honda Sensing is standard on Sport Touring and costs an additional $1,000 on EX-L Navi. It includes collision-mitigation braking, lane-keep assist, and active cruise control that works even in low-speed traffic. LaneWatch is another available option that uses a camera to show blind-spot traffic on the dashboard touchscreen.
- Infotainment: The hatchback can be equipped with a 7-inch Display Audio touchscreen that supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. EX-L Navi and Sport Touring add navigation. If you choose the manual transmission, you give up the better infotainment setup and end up with a much simpler audio and connectivity package.
- Fuel efficiency: The expert data does not provide MPG or MPGe figures for this model year.
Which 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback trim should I buy?
The 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback is offered in 5 trim levels: LX, EX, EX-L Navi, Sport, Sport Touring.
Here's the short version:
- LX: This is the entry point, and it gives you the hatchback body, the 174-hp turbo engine, and the standard 6-speed manual. It makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the model and are comfortable with a simpler equipment list.
- EX: This trim adds more convenience and tech, and it’s a better fit if you want an easier daily driver with the automatic transmission. It’s a strong middle-ground choice for shoppers who care more about comfort and usability than sporty extras.
- EX-L Navi: This is the best-value trim if you want a more complete feature set without jumping all the way to the top. It adds navigation and can be paired with Honda Sensing for an extra $1,000, which makes it the trim to target if safety tech matters to you.
- Sport: This trim is the enthusiast-leaning pick, with the 180-hp version of the turbo engine and the standard manual transmission. Choose it if you want the most engaging driving experience and like the hatchback’s sportier character.
- Sport Touring: This is the most fully equipped version, and it’s the one to buy if you want the hatchback’s best mix of performance, tech, and safety equipment. Honda Sensing is standard here.

Should I buy a 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 33.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 52.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.63% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.56/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The first U.S.-market Civic Hatchback since 2005 gives this year a distinct place in the lineup, with extra cargo space and sporty tweaks that make it especially appealing for practical, fun-to-drive shoppers.
The bottom line: The 2017 is a smart pick if you want the Civic Hatchback’s unique first-year return to the U.S. market, especially if you value cargo flexibility and a lively driving feel. If you’re more price-sensitive, compare it carefully with nearby model years and focus on the cleanest, best-equipped listing rather than the cheapest one.
