Why it stands out
The 2017 Honda Civic stands out as one of the most well-rounded compact cars of its era, with a reputation for strong handling, good fuel economy, and everyday practicality. It was part of the 10th generation, which earned wide critical praise for its handling, features, and practicality, and the hatchback version added after a 12-year absence from the U.S. lineup gave buyers a more versatile body style. The generation also brought a major step up in size, with almost as much interior room as an early 2000s Accord, helping explain why the Civic remained such a popular choice for shoppers who wanted a small car that did not feel cramped.
For 2017 hatchback models, Honda offered two turbocharged powertrains and a useful spread of trims. Standard equipment on the base LX included automatic climate control, a rear-view camera, a folding rear seat, a four-speaker audio system with a USB port, and a 5-inch infotainment screen. Available features such as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, blind-spot monitors, heated front and rear seats, navigation, and a moonroof helped the car feel more modern as buyers moved up the lineup. The manual transmission in the LX also gave the Civic a bit of enthusiast appeal, while the broader generation’s active-safety features added to its everyday usefulness.
There are a few drawbacks to keep in mind. The 2017 to 2019 hatchbacks logged a high number of consumer complaints, including infotainment glitches, air conditioning condenser failures, and oil dilution in the 1.5-liter turbo. The generation also had a number of known issues beyond those complaints, so a careful inspection and VIN check matter. Even so, the 2017 Honda Civic remains appealing because it combines efficiency, space, and driving enjoyment in a package that is still easy to recommend.

Great value for the money. Practical but has all the safety and phone features we wanted. I also looked at Mazda 3 and the Corolla; this is better looking. Bigger on the inside than I expected. The 2.0 liter is not very fast, but adequate with good gas mileage.

How much does the 2017 Honda Civic cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $15,021 |
| Year-Round Low | $14,869 |
| Year-Round High | $15,669 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $15,404 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −2.49% |
Prices have softened 2.49% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 2,675 listings available, which gives you a solid pool of options to compare.
Is the 2017 Honda Civic a good car?
Yes — the 2017 Honda Civic earns a 4.8/5 user rating, which points to strong owner satisfaction. Owners consistently praise its reliability, great gas mileage, enjoyable features, impressive handling, and spacious interior. That lines up well with its role as a practical daily driver that still feels engaging and roomy for a compact car. With 29.5% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have a decent chance of finding a competitive price.
Is the 2017 Honda Civic reliable?
Owners rate it 4.8/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback highlights reliability, and it also describes the car as a dependable choice with strong gas mileage and practical everyday usability. That said, used buyers should still plan for a careful inspection because long-term ownership risk depends heavily on maintenance history and whether prior issues were addressed.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Honda Civic?
At 45.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should run a vehicle history report before you commit, then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection from a trusted mechanic. Focus closely on condition, maintenance records, and signs of past body damage or unresolved mechanical issues. Given the model’s known problem areas, a careful check is especially important on any car that looks unusually cheap or lightly documented.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Honda Civic?
This is a moderate market, so you can be selective without expecting a deep bargain on every listing.
- Deal availability: 29.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 2,675 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.49% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 45.4% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $14,869, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Honda Civic's resale value?
The current average of $15,021 sits slightly below last year's $15,404.
That softer pricing suggests the market has cooled a bit, which can help you buy at a more favorable entry point today. For a future seller, the key question is whether the car holds its appeal through strong condition, clean history, and good maintenance records. Models that present well and have documented care should be easier to move later, even if the broader market remains price-sensitive.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.8/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2017 Honda Civic or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 29.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 45.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.49% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.8/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2016 if:
- At $13,818, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $15,021 average.
- It brings a more polished feel while still emphasizing thrift and dependability.
The bottom line: The 2017 is the better all-around pick if you want a well-liked Civic with strong owner satisfaction and a broad used-car market to shop from. If your priority is saving money upfront, the 2016 is the more budget-friendly path and still delivers the Civic’s core strengths.
